Quizzo News And Notes

FOOTBALL QUIZZO: Hello from the Denver Airport. A couple of quick notes before boarding with our novelty sized check. First of all, we’re gonna celebrate the Super Bowl with a Super Bowl of Football Quizzo this Friday night at the Ugly American. Action starts at 7:30 p.m. More details coming soon.

QUIZZO TONIGHT: Mike Minion returns to action tonight at the Westbury at 9 o’clock. Been a good quiz lately, and the move up in time has helped bring in a few extra teams. And of course the Westbury’s beer specials are epic.

IN COMEDY: The Chip Chantry One Man Show is tonight at the Shubin Theatre. Gonna be some great comedians, including The Feeko Brothers, Mike Rainey, and Jim Grammond. Show starts at 8 p.m. See ya there!

Meet the Geeks

Quick word of advice: if you have a major trivia event that you fly 2,000 miles to participate in, DO NOT consume numerous Long Island Ice Teas the night before, no matter how reasonably priced they are. Also, it is NEVER a good idea to return to a bar you were in earlier, except the 2nd time wearing mullet wigs. Our brains are mush, and our bodies are weak, and any worries my wife might have had about me flirting with women can be put to rest. Garbo in a mullet wig made sure of that.

Unfortunately, our fearless leader Swanson is fighting a fierce cold. He didn’t even make it out for dinner last night, and he has been in bed for the past 15 hours. We are praying for a Michael Jordan “Flu Game” performance from Swanson. The rest of us are moderately healthy, though as I stated earlier, extremely hung over. We did not take into account that we’re a Mile High. In fact, we didn’t take into account much of anything. We were accountless. I will be updating throughout tonight’s event on twitter.

Off to Denver

I’ll be constantly updating our Denver adventure here on the website, on twitter and onfacebook. Real time stuff during the actual Geek Bowl will be updated between rounds on twitter. And I’ll be taking plenty of video. In fact, I should have some posted by this evening on the website, so be sure to check back. The mullet wigs have been secured, thanks to the good people at Percy Street BBQ (awesome BBQ, by the way) and my buddy Casey at Flying Fish. Now we just need to find some denim shirts and Philly Ray Cyrus will be complete. Meanwhile, there’s been another anti-Philly battle rap, and it’s actually not half bad. That said, we’re done rapping…we’re going to let our trivia answers do the talking from here on out.

PICS AND SCORES: All of the scores, quizze news, and avatars will be posted on Monday. No time today.

Triple French Fry Thursday is On (with an Awesome 80s and 90s Movie Round)

frenchfry1-1
Our last quiz before heading west. At the Ugly American, things have been wide slam open the past few weeks. Three different winners in the past three weeks. Can your team make it four for four? Action starts at 8 p.m. And don’t forget: $2 Lagers. Plus last week, I didn’t have time to give away french fries. So in an effort to make up tonight, I am giving away three baskets of fries! Expect a lot of faceoffs.

On to the Bards at 10:15 p.m. where you can take on the team that’s headed to Denver this weekend. $2.50 Lagers and Yuengling giveaways. Tonight’s wild card round is gonna be a lot of fun. All I’ll tell you is that it’s an 80s and 90s movie round. Hope to see ya tonight!

VOTE: What Should I Perform at Geek Bowl?

So there is a quizmaster talent show at Geek Bowl, and each quizmaster gets 3 minutes. Needless to say, no matter what I do, I am going to be booed vociferously. So I have a few options. I can perform an old classic like Flashdance to boos, or I can learn the words to Philadelphia Freedom and really get booed. Or I can just come up with a 3 minute stand up routine ripping Denver and the other cities there. Our team is going with the team name Philly Ray Cyrus, so I could also sing Achy Breaky Heart. Or I could just kick some ass with Ice Ice Baby. Whattya think I should do?

The Craziness Continues Tonight

overcrowding So far this year, the quizzo train has been packed with people at Vous and Black Sheep. We’ve been standing room only at both bars for the past month, and in fact a couple of teams got turned away last week at the Locust Rendezvous. Therefore, I would highly encourage you to make reservations at the Vous tonight. A small price to pay for $2 Buds and $3 Magic Hat Howls. 215-985-1163.

On to the Black Sheep, and like I said, it’s been rocking lately. I would highly encourage you to try to get there no later than 7:30, or you probably won’t get a table. Action starts at 8 p.m. Good quiz this week.

One more note: we’ve had a couple of amateur teams trying to get away with using their iphones the last few weeks. Don’t worry. I see them, I tell them once to stop, and after that I just knock 30 points of their scores. Why? Because teams that cheat never have the nerve to complain about their scores. Bottom line: don’t cheat at my quiz.

And of course, I’ll have Quizzo Bowl tickets for sale tonight. Keep in mind, this has sold out the past 6 years, so don’t wait too late to buy yours. This is going to be the best Quizzo Bowl ever. Guaranteed.

Quizzo Bowl VII: Greatest Hits Tix Now on Sale!

On Saturday, February 19th, we’re headed back to where it all began, the World Cafe Live. And we’re bringing back two of our greatest acts of all time. Haulin’ Oats, who ripped the roof off the Golden Palace in Quizzo Bowl V, are taking it to the next level. In addition to Hall and Oates jams, they are going to be playing all of your favorites from the 80s…though there are rumors of a Motown song or two, just to keep things honest. You think they sounded good in the Golden Palace, wait until you hear these guys shred in an actual music hall. It’s gonna be incredible. Furthermore, we are bringing back our greatest halftime act of all time, Norm Klar, who rocked the house at Quizzo Bowl II! He will be performing his amazing magic/comedy act for our halftime show. He is one of the funniest and most beloved comedians in Philadelphia, and I can’t wait to see him shock and astound again this year.

Of course, in addition to the Lovely Ginger and the Lovely Cookie, Fastball Bob will be returning this year to help co-host the event. (Also, if anyone has any room on their couch or even room in their garage, he could use a place to stay the weekend of the event.)

However, there is one aspect of previous Quizzo Bowls that will NOT be taking place this year. Johnny will NOT be rapping and dancing to open this one. And even if he were rapping, he certainly would not be performing an accompanying dance number with Chip Chantry. Such a thing would be ludicrous, and quite frankly, a bit immature.

Anyways, Johnny will have tickets on sale at Quizzo all week, where he will be selling them. They are $25 a pop. If you can’t make it to quizzo, you can buy them online, though there is a $2 service charge.

Who’s Gonna Step Up on Big Money Tuesday?

MoneyToBurnWe’ve been playing to sold out crowds at the Vous and Black Sheep. Good luck finding a table at the Bards, and the Ugly American was rocking this past weekend. Best place to find a seat? Well, right now it happens to be at the two places that offer up the best prizes, O’Neals and City Tap House. At O’Neals the winner walks with a $50 gift certificate, and at City Tap House it is an outrageous $100 GC for first. Furthermore, I only let Steak Em Up play once or twice a month at City Tap House, making sure that we’ll have some parity there, so in addition to having the best prize it also provides one of your best chances of winning. O’Neals at 8 pm, CTH at 10:1 5 pm. Hope to see ya tonight!
