JGT Power Rankings for Week of October 4th

JohnniE of Duane’s World said after their loss last week: “There are 3 places that nobody wants to be, because of the accompanying curse. The cover of SI, the cover of Madden, and #1 on the JGT power rankings.” Well, the top 3 teams in the past 3 rankings have all lost the following week, so there could be some truth to that statement. We’ll see if this week’s #1 can avoid the curse. If your team made the cut, click like below to show off to your friends how much of a nerd you are.

1. The Jams (Locust Rendezvous). They are a team of mystery outside of the Vous since they refuse to have their photo taken, but being the top team at JGT’s toughest quizzo bar makes them the picture of success. (That’s terrible writing, folks.) Last week: #5

2. Team Popesack (North Star). This 3 player team just keeps on winning at North Star. With the other top teams tumbling, they make a giant leap in the standings. Last week: #6

3. Steak Em Up (CTH and Bards). Were primed to take ove rhte top spot with a big win on Tuesday and a big lead on Thursday, but a stunning collapse in the final round keeps them in the #3 spot. Last week: #3

4. Inglorious Barristers (Locust Rendezvous). Keep in mind the QCS computers keep strength of schedule in mind when making these rankings, and a first and 2nd place finish the past two weeks at the Vous has the Barristers shooting up the charts.  Last week: #7

5. Duane’s World (Black Sheep). A third place finish knocks the World out of the top spot, but at least lifts the dreaded JGT Cover curse. Last week: #1

6. What’s Good for the Puma (Black Sheep). Now that Catdog has started getting married, having children, and behaving like adults, there has been a bit of a power vacuum at Black Sheep the past few months. Enter a new cat. What’s Good for the Puma looks like they might be taking up the role of Duane’s World’s chief nemesis with an impressive win this past week. Last week: NR

7. Why Can’t Us (Ugly American). Heidi’s husband Bill looks an awful lot like Joe Blanton, but this team is still all aces. Last week: NR

8. Phillies Nutz (Bards). A huge come from behind win for the Nutz, as they knock off the Steak at the Bards on Thursday. Last week: NR

9. Jews for Tom Cruise (O’Neals). Win a defensive struggle at O’Neals on Tuesday to climb into the Top 10. Last week: NR

10. Million Dollar Robot Baby (City Tap House). Record the 2nd highest score on the JGT circuit last week…and lose to Steak Em Up, who had the highest. Last week: NR

JGT Power Rankings

1. Duane’s World (Black Sheep). They’ve won at Black Sheep 4 out of the last 5 weeks, but they’ll probably have to prove their mettle against the Steak to keep the top spot. Last week: #2

2. The Champs (???). Shoot to the #2 spot in the rankings with an impressive win at 1920s quiz. Anthrax says the team is in rebuilding mode, but they’re off to a good start. Last week: NR

3. Steak Em Up (Bards). A big win at the Bards, but a 2nd place finish at CTH and a 4th place finish at the 1920s quiz keep them out of the top spot. Seeing them finish 4th on Sunday was the highlight of my week (Which probably says as much about my week as anything else).  Last week: #4

4. Specific Jawns (Bards). It’s tough when you score 117 and still lose, but that’s what happened to the Jawns on Thursday at Bards. It drops them a spot in the rankings. But they remain #1 in your hearts. Last week: #3

5. The Jams (Rendezvous). Big weeks by several of their rivals and a loss at the Vous drop the Jams all the way to the #5 position. Last week: #1

6. Team Popesack (North Star). They’ve established themselves as the team to beat at North Star, and could be headed to a Bounty with another win. Last week: #6

7. Inglorious Barristers (Rendezvous). A huge win for this team at the Rendezvous. One of the biggest in their careers. There were those who thought that this team had passed its prime, but they proved the naysayers wrong on Wednesday. Last week: #9

8. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics (Ugly American). A 2nd place finish at the American despite the reappearance of Marshall. Or is it, “Because of the reappearance of Marshall”? That’s one only the team can answer for sure. Last week: #5

9. Ruby Tuesday (City Tap House). A team of mercenaries, trained in the art of International trivia knowledge, they shocked the world at City Tap House on Tuesday with a 122-115 win over Steak. Last week: NR

T-10. Tooth Wind and Fire (Ugly American). A huge win for this longstanding franchise on Thursday propels them into the top 10 for the first time in years. Last week: NR

T-10. Phillie RNs (O’Neals). A huge upset at O’Neals last Tuesday, as the RNs put on a clinic. Wow, there were so many upsets last week it was impossible to keep this list at 10. Last week: NR

Major Movement on the Power Rankings

An interesting week last week caused a few major shifts in our power rankings.

1. The Jams (Locust Rendezvous). They play the toughest competition on the JGT circuit, and they’ve won 3 straight weeks. A loss by the Steak puts them in the top spot. Last week: #3

2. Duane’s World (Black Sheep). An impressive 30 point win at Black Sheep, but as of late, they’ve been afraid to test their mettle against the Steak. The QCS system takes strength of schedule into account. To be the man, you gotta beat the man, and they’ve gotten a little too comfortable in the friendly confines of their home park. Last week: #2

3. Specific Jawns (The Bards). The only top flight team this past week that was willing to go toe to toe with Steak Em Up, they came from 10 down to knock them off in the 4th round. Furthermore, they won the most recent invitational. Last week: NR.

4. Steak Em Up (Bards). Cruise to an easy win at City Tap, but crash and burn at Bards on Thursday, much to my enjoyment. Last week: #1

5. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics (Ugly American). A narrow win at UA keeps them in the Top 5, but a lot of questions remain. Will Marshall stop being lazy? What are they teaching Bob at Thunderbird U.? And does former Diabetic Gabe still exist? Last week: #5

6. Team Popesack (North Star). They’ve quickly established themselves as the team to beat at the North Star. A win tonight could launch them into the top 5. Last week: #8

7. The Misspellers (O’Neals). Trailing by 15 heading into the final round at O’Neals, they scored an amazing 55-points to score the come from behind win of the week and launch themselves onto the power rankings. Last week: NR

8. Magnus ver Magnusson (Locust Rendezvous). Drop out of the Top 3 at the Vous for the first time in months, dropping them four spots in the rankings. Last week: #4

9. Inglorious Barristers (Locust Rendezvous). An impressive showing this week at the Vous. We’ve just go to see if their hearts are in it for the long haul. Will they make a run at another Invitational invite? Last Week: NR

10. The Savage Ear (O’Neals). As much skill as any team on the circuit, but they just can’t seem to get the whole team together much lately. Chemistry obviously an issue for this squad, but they still nearly pulled off a win last week. Last week: NR

JGT Power Rankings Return

The Fall Invitational is right around the corner, at which time the numbers will speak for themselves. In the meantime, however, we’re gonna go BCS style and pick out our top teams heading into this week subjectively. Here goes:

1. Steak Em Up. After two wins last week, the most successful team in quizzo history* looks to head into the Autumn Invitational red hot. If anybody needs me, I’ll be rooting for them to lose this week.

2. Duane’s World. Two wins in the past 3 weeks put these perennial powerhouses in the #2 spot. And I’m sure they would have recorded perfect scores those two weeks if Mike Minion had played. If you don’t believe me, ask him.

3. The Jams. This is pretty much a toss up. In the last 6 weeks at the Vous, the Jams have won 3 times and Magnus has won 3 times.

4. Magnus ver Magnusson. The question about the top Rendezvous teams is, “Will they ever participate at an Invitational and prove their mettle against top competition?”

5. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. The loss of Bob to Thunderbird University and Marshall to the suburbs has hurt this squad, but they proved that they can still bring the pain with an impressive two player win at UA on Thursday.

6. Million Dollar Robot Baby. Over the years, this franchise (formerly known as Narcotyzing Dysfunktion) is the only team that has consistently rivaled the Steak. I don’t know how he does it, but Matt the Peter really knows how to whip this squad into shape.

7. Tug My McGraw. A win two weeks ago at CTH, followed by a 3rd Place finish last week. If this team got a sports fanatic on their squad, I think they could consistently compete with the Steak. Furthermore, team member Chet Bumsted is the only person in Philly with an aloha shirt collection as impressive as mine.

8. Team Popesack. Three wins in the last four quizzes at North Star Bar, they have established themselves as the team to beat at the newest JGT venture.

9. Why Can’t Us. A first, 2nd, and 3rd place finish in the past 3 weeks at Ugly American, this team is always in the mix at UA.

10. Taking it to the Max. A first place finish at O’Neals this past week in their first quiz launched these guys onto the national spotlight. If and when Savage Ear gets off their lazy asses and play quizzo again, it will be interesting to see if they have new rivals.

*which is as much of an insult as it is an honor. What nerds.

JGT Quizzo Power Rankings

They’re back! The power rankings have returned. Did your team make the Top 10? If not, it’s time to start recruiting nerds so you can make a run at the top spot.

1. The Jams. This team has been simply unstoppable for the past three months. There used to be parity at the Vous. Now the Jams have won the last 9 times they’ve played. One of the hottest streaks in JGT quizzo history. The bounty next week is up to $45.

2. Duane’s World. It’s a real toss up between Duane’s World and the Steak. I’m going to give Duane’s World the slight edge primarily to piss off Nate.

3. Steak Em Up. See #2.

4. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. Two huge blowout wins (by 22 and 39 points) this week has this team looking to make a run at the top.

5. Where’s John’s Rum? O’Neals is a toss up, with the Rum winning one week, the Savage Ear winning one week, and then the two teams combining forces to win this past week. Rum gets the slight edge, primarily to piss off Todd.

6. Savage Ear. See #5

7. Peenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This team changes their name every week, but now that they’ve started playing consistently, they’ve shown they can hang with the big boys. A 2nd place finish at O’Neals this week, and an upset over Duane’s World and Steak Em Up at Black Sheep last week.

8. Magnus ver Magnusson. A win at a Jam-less Rendeavous last week, followed by a 2nd place finish this week. Their propensity for late game collapses has some voters worried, but this team is the odds-on favorite to end the Jams streak.

9. Why Can’t Us. A win at Ugly American last week, but they were apparently scared off by my threats to rap at quizzo this week and didn’t make it.

10. Team D’Brickashaw. An unheralded team thus far, but they always seem to be in the mix at the Tap House. This is a team that’s about 2 nerds away from making a run up the rankings.

JGT Power Rankings

carrot-topA huge week of upsets has wreaked havoc on the power rankings.

  1. Steak Em Up. A loss on Thursday doesn’t knock them out of the catbird seat. Last week: #1
  2. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. A win on Tuesday, a shocking loss on Thursday. Still, they move up one spot. Last week: #3
  3. Grab Your Ankles, I Want to Put It Innuendo. I don’t remember any team playing their first ever JGT quizzo…and beating Steak Em Up. Who the hell are these guys? Does Steak Em Up finally have a rival? Last week: NR
  4. Magnus ver Magnusson. Last week not even a blip on the radar, this week a Top 5 ranking. Funny what a win over the Jams can do for you. Last week: NR
  5. Newman’s Own. The JGTQCS computer almost exploded this week, with another team playing for the first time pulling off a win, this time at Black Sheep. Furthermore, they make a hell of an Italian dressing. Last week: NR
  6. Tube Sock. A 2 person team that had won a 98 Degrees CD just a couple of weeks ago for last place pulls off an Upset for the Ages at the Ugly American and finds themselves in the most prestigious power rankings on earth.
  7. The Jams. Picked a bad week to lose by a mere 2. With so many upset winners they drop to 7th. Last week: #4
  8. Duane’s World. A 2nd place finish at Westbury was acceptable, but a rare out of the money finish at the Sheep sends their stock tumbling. Last week: #2
  9. Savage Ear. O’Neals former Lone Stars stuck in a 2nd Place rut. But at least Annie got her gift certificate. Last week: #6
  10. My Couch Pulls Out But I Don’t. Another team comes out of nowhere to impress at the Black Sheep, losing by only two. Last week: NR

  1. Steak Em Up. Two big wins keep them in the top spot for the 7th straight week. Last week: #1
  2. Duane’s World/Escahton. Wow, what a week for Duane’s World. Three wins in one week is almost unheard of. Last week: #6
  3. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. A blowout win Tuesday at O’Neals, a blowout loss Thursday at UA. They drop one spot. Last week: #2
  4. The Jams. A narrow win at the Vous is their 3rd in the last 4 weeks. Last week: #3
  5. Look Up Look Down Now I’m on a Horse. Despite a performance by Pong that has the JGT Ethics Committee looking into possible sanctions,  2nd place finish at Bards on Tuesday keeps them in the 5 spot. Last week: #5
  6. The Savage Ear. A disappointing loss to the Diabetics drops them two spots. Pam can’t blame biased judges for this one. Last week: #4
  7. Inglorious Barristers. Another heartbreaking loss to the Jams, this time by two points. Last week: #8
  8. 1022. A week after a big win at the Vous, they finish a distant third and drop a spot. Last week: #7
  9. 85 Kicks in the Balls. WHere did these guys come from? They come out of nowhere to finish 2nd at the Black Sheep. Do we have a new player at the Sheep? Last week: NR
  10. Team Friendship. They add Steve-O but still can’t get past Steak Em Up. Last week: NR

The JGT Quizzo Power Rankings

powerNo surprise at the top, but after that things get interesting. I really can’t remember a time when we’ve had this much parity. New winners almost every week, and last week Steak Em Up squeaked out with one win and lost on Thursday. Makes for an interesting Top 10, and things should get even more interesting this week as we return to the Black Sheep.

  1. Steak Em Up. They finally fall on Thursday, but they are still undoubtedly  the best in the Biz. But with big crowds coming back to the Bards on Thursdays, can they remain on top? Last week: #1
  2. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. A win at the American on Thursday helps them climb the charts into the two-spot. Last week: #3
  3. The Jams. A 2nd place finish on Wednesday would have probably kept them in 2nd place on the JGTQPR, but a 3rd place finish drops them into 3rd by a few % points. Last week: #2
  4. The Savage Ear. Two straight wins at O’Neals, though this one in overtime, moves them up a slot, and into the top 4. Last week: #5
  5. Look Up, Look Down, Now I’m a Horse. This flashy young squad is setting the quizzo world on its ear. While many teams avoid Steak Em Up like the plague, these brash young upstarts aren’t scared to go mano-a-mano with the #1 squad in quizzo. This Thursday, they took the evil force down. It was beautiful, and I was happy to hand off the $25 bounty. Last week: #7
  6. Duane’s World. A win, a 2nd place finish, and a 4th place finish. Say what you will about the World, they damn sure love the sport. Last week: #4
  7. 1022. Persistence pays off. It had been a while since they had won at the Vous, but this week they overcame three of the top 10 teams on the circuit in an extremely impressive win. Bob was so excited about the win he didn’t even tell me to shove it up my ass. Last week: NR
  8. Inglorious Barristers. We’ve been wallowing in abject geekdom for too long. I love the fact that this young, suave, and sophisticated squadron has come in to liven up the quizzo scene a bit. But what’s up with all the 2nd place finishes? Last week: #6
  9. Stop Eating Tuna. (aka Sandy Fauxginas). The come within one point of winning the $40 Bounty at the Bards. Can they pull the upset this week, and claim the $45? Last week: NR
  10. Drillin and Frackin. He’s long been a champion of the comments section, but this is his first time in the top 10 in quizzo rankings: Palestra Jon and his daughter almost pulled a major upset at O’Neals. I’m quite certain that Bob will not pleased with this development. Last week: NR.

JGT Power Rankings

bodybuilderI honestly don’t remember a time when we’ve ever had more parity (well, except for at the Bards). It’s great for the quiz circuit, tough on the old QCS computer. The first two picks are easy, after that it’s a doozy.

  1. Steak Em Up. Been on a roll, but the bounties seem to be bringing back some big guns. Don’t think they’ll go unscathed this week. Last week: #1
  2. The Jams. 3 wins in the last 4 weeks have the Jams sitting pretty at the Vous. Last week: #2
  3. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. A tough loss at the UA on Thursday, but the 2nd place finish keeps them in the 3 hole. Last week: #3
  4. Why Can’t Us World. How to rank these guys? Two perennial Top 10 teams combined forces at the American to pull off an upset over L. Ron, so I guess I’ll rank ’em as one team this week. Last week: #8, #10
  5. The Savage Ear. A dominant performance at one of the biggest blowouts in O’Neals history. Maybe if the Toddfather can rededicate himself to this squad, they can really start to make some noise. Last week: NR
  6. Inglorious Barristers. One win and 2 2nd place finishes in the last 3 weeks at the Vous. The Jams are the only thing between this squad and elite status. Last week: #5
  7. Look Up Look Down Now I’m a Horse. An impressive 105 at the Bards Thursday night wasn’t quite enough to take the title from the Steak Em Up. They might have been ranked higher, but Pong never got back to me about kickball. Last week: #9.
  8. Phillie RNs. The Bad News: they lose by 28 at O’Neals. The good news: it was still good enough for 2nd, and good enough to keep them in the Top 10. Last week: #7
  9. Narcotyzing Dysfunktion. Brought a solid squad to the Bards on Thursday. Unfortunately, while a 102 would have won at the UA, it only got them a 3rd place at the Bards. I have a funny feeling that they’ll break out of their slump in a big way on the biggest Big Money Tuesday ever. Last week: NR
  10. Insert Topical Team Name Here. A 3rd place finish at UA keeps them in the top 10. And they’ll get their classical music round one of these weeks. Last week: #6

JGT Power Rankings

powerranks(These are power rankings heading into this week’s play, not counting Monday or Tuesdays results this week. Those will be counted in next week’s Rankings.)

  1. Steak Em Up. Sick of their rampage through the Bards, I have an announcement forthcoming about next Tuesday’s quiz that should get some more hounds on their tails. Last week: #1
  2. The Jams. An easy win at the Vous last week keeps them in the 2-hole. Last week: #2
  3. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. May have won on Thursday if I hadn’t of steered them wrong on a question. In a pathetic grovelling gesture to them, (and because all the other teams ranked #3 to #10 all lost) their consolation prize is a significant bump in the rankings. Last week: #8
  4. Satan’s Minions. Could be a perennial contender, but don’t play enough as a team. Gotta admit, it was a wonderful blast from the past to hear Howard yelling “Eight! Eight!” every time I announced the weekly double. Last week: NR
  5. Inglorious Barristers. Perhaps the best dressed team on the circuit, the Barristers style and profile up one spot in the rankings with a 2nd place finish at the Vous. Last week: #6
  6. Insert Topical Team Name Here. Pull of a huge upset at the Ugly American on Thursday. After months of tinkering, has this team finally created the right formula for a consistent threat to L. Ron’s power? Last week: NR
  7. Phillie RNs. Two straight weeks of upsets have wreaked havoc on the JGT QCS computer. The Phillie RNs come out of nowhere to pull a monster upset at O’Neals and climb back into the rankings. Last week: NR
  8. Duane’s World. Ouch! Blowout losses at Westbury and Black Sheep slide Duane’s World down to the 8 slot. Last week: #3
  9. Look Up Look Down Now I’m a Horse. A third place finish at the Bards drops them down the rankings a few notches. Perhaps they can get back near the top with an impressive drink-off win this Thursday. Last week: #5
  10. Why Can’t Us. With Audra moved on to greener pastures, the two remaining ladies are still able to finish in the Top 3 at UA. Last week: #7
