Dallas, DC, and Terrence Brown Trio Added to City Vs. City Smackdown

Gonna be an early NFC East matchup on Sunday, as in addition to Albuquerque and Denver, we’ll also be taking on teams in Dallas and DC. Here’s how it will work:

Our top 5 team scores will be measured against those 4 cities’ top 5 scores. Whoever averages the highest will be the winner, and that city will receive the Cup, which will be presented at either Geek Bowl or Quizzo Bowl (depending on who wins). If Philly wins, we get to name the cup whatever we want, and we can defend it anytime we want.

The event starts this Sunday at National Mechanics at 7 p.m. The Terrence Brown trio will be entertaining between rounds. We had them perform a couple of years ago at an event at Urban Saloon and they were terrific. If you want to earn an invite, and have not received one yet, you can do so by either finishing first or second in one of our quizzes this week. You’ve got four more chances to be a part of the excitement and help bring the Cup to Philadelphia. If anyone has any questions, please post them below.

JGTSI Scores Are Up; New Physical Challenge Posted

Here are the scores after 6 weeks. Things are getting interesting. The top of the leaderboard is littered with teams who are taking this physical challenge stuff seriously. After that, we’ve got our usual suspects (Steak Em Up, the Jams, and Duane’s World). I think our Top 10 teams are all but settled. That leaves a lot of teams vying for our final 5 spots. You wanna get a leg up on earning one of those spots? There’s a new physical challenge on facebook. Extremely simple, and should be pretty funny to see photos of you guys as kids.

Now, before you decide whether to do a physical challenge and get your team out to quizzo the next few weeks in the hopes of earning a spot, keep this in mind: you are not only vying for fabulous cash and prizes, you are vying to be a part of history. The Top 15 teams not only get an invite to the JGTSI, they will be representing Philadelphia against Denver, Albuquerque, and Austin in a City vs. Smackdown at 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 7th at the National Mechanics. We’ll have live music, drink and food specials, and a lot of fun. And the city whose top 10 teams have the best average scores? They get to name the Cup that will be presented to the winning city at either Geek Bowl if it’s one of their cities or at Quizzo Bowl if it’s Philly. I really want Dicker, the head of Geeks Who Drink, to have to walk on stage and present me with that trophy.

There is some hope if you don’t finish in the Top 15 and want to be a part of this historic event. You can earn a wild card spot by winning first place at a quiz on the last week or performing a series of extremely difficult physical challenges. But you can make things a heck of a lot easier on yourself by getting your ass in gear the next two weeks. Between finishing Top 3 at the quizzes and getting physical challnge points, there is no reason any team can’t shoot to the top 15 in the next two weeks.

But there’s no time to waste. Your best shot to earn points? Right now it’s playing at City Tap House, Ugly American, and the Bards. They’re the easiest bars to score a win in right now. And furthermore, I’ll have physical challenge points to give out at actual quizzos this week. So be there! Hope to see ya this week!

Geeks Who Drink Rules Week

As you know, City vs. City Smackdown is going to be the city of Philly versus the Geeks Who Drink crew. We’ll be taking on some of the best teams in their “Big 3” cities of Austin, Albuquerque, and Denver on August 7th to determine who wins the City vs. City Smackdown…and who gets to name the trophy that will be presented at Geek Bowl (if one of their cities wins) or Quizzo Bowl (if Philly wins.)

Well, the event on the 7th will be using Geeks Who Drink rules (the last time we did City vs. City, we used Philly rules), so I figured we needed to warm up a bit using their rules this week. That means that this week we’ll be dropping our normal scoring system for their asinine system. Here is how it works. There are 8 Rounds of 8 questions each (still trying to figure out how to do this in less than two hours. I may actually have to start on time this week.) Here’s the deal, courtesy of Dicker of GWD fame:

8 rounds of 8 questions. All rounds worth 8 pts unless otherwise indicated.

R1-theme round
R2- music round – 16 possible points
R3 – 50/50 or speed round
R4 – theme round
R5 – visual round
R6 – theme round
R7- audio round (usually clips from movies/TV)
R8 – random knowledge –  16 possible points

Joker: can be played on one round only by circling the joker icon on answer sheet. Doubles points for that round only. Once a team decides to joker, their decision is final.

Conventional wisdom is that if a team knows they got 12 or higher on round 2, they should joker it since round 8 is completely random in subject matter and difficulty.

JGTSI Scores Updated Through 5 Weeks

Here is the updated scoreboard. With a win and 6 physical challenge points this week, Brown Betty has taken a commanding lead. Now that Steak Em Up is way down the list, maybe I should offer a prize for whoever scores the most points. I’ll think about it. Teams in yellow are in contention for the bonus prize, while teams in blue would also earn invites if the season ended today. Teams in the green…well, they better start scoring some points in a hurry, or they won’t get the opportunity to defend Philly’s honor against Denver on August 7th.

Your best place to score points in a hurry? There have been 7 different winners in the past 7 weeks at O’Neals, and City Tap House has been wide open this summer. Things have slowed considerably since school ended at CTH, but the prizes are just as awesome as ever, and during the summer they are easier to win. $100 Gift certificate to the winner, $50 for 2nd place. If you want to win and get into the mix, I’d highly suggest the City Tap House next week.

Updated JGTSI Scoreboard

Here it is, the scoreboard through 4 weeks. (This does not include the latest “overrated” physical challenges.) We are now halfway through the contest, and things are looking really interesting. A 2 person squad is in 3rd place, Steak Em Up has fallen to 7th, a team that hasn’t played yet is tied with Duane’s World for 4th thanks to physical challenges, and perennial contenders Savage Ear, 1022, and Insert Topical Team Name are nowhere to be found on the Top 20 list.

If you want to get your team in contention, you can almost instantly. Just get a photo of you performing the latest physical challenge on facebook by Wednesday at noon. After that, we’ll be taking the rest of that week off from physical challenges, so don’t wait too late.

And be sure to look over the scoreboard and make sure I have your points right. Some teams switch names each week so I don’t necessarily give them all the points they deserve.

JGTSI Scores Heading Into Tonight

Here they are, the JGTSI scores heading into tonight’s quizzo action. That includes quizzes from earlier this week. The teams in yellow would be in the Top 10 if the season ended today, the teams in blue would earn an invite, and the teams in green are on the outside looking in. The physical challenges are really making a huge difference in this summer’s event. There is a brand new challenge posted on facebook right now. You can earn up to 6 points this week. Well worth it if you’re trying to make the cut. The Top 15 teams earn an invite, with a few teams earning a wild card berth in our final week. The event is going down on Sunday, August 7th at National Mechanics, and we’ll be competing for glory against teams in Denver. For more info, click here.

Scores Through Week 2 of the JGTSI

Here are our scores after two weeks, and things are starting to get really interesting. Teams in the yellow are the ones that would earn an invite if the season ended today. There are also 8 teams tied for 15th, so 1 of them would make the cut. Looks like the physical challenge situation is off the hook this summer, as 4 teams scored the maximum 10 points and another scored 8. There is a new challenge up now, with a maximum of 8 points this week. Looks like the physical challenges are going to play a big part in who finishes Top 10, and who earns an invite to rep Philly in this challenge against Denver on August 7th at National Mechanics. If you have not played or not scored yet, it’s ok. You are still in the hunt, as all you’ll need is a few physical challenge points and a Top 3 finish this week to get right back into the thick of things. But I wouldn’t wait too much longer to get your act together.  We kick off week 3 on Tuesday…Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll Week.

5 Quick Questions with Tonight’s Guest Host Felicia D’Ambrosio

We had a great time with last night’s guest hosts Suzy Woods and Drew lazor. Suzy handled the notoriously tough Vous crowd like a champ, and the round Drew wrote about food was damn good (I’ll post it a little later.)

Tonight, we welcome Felicia D’Ambrosio. She is managing editor at Grid Philly, writes for the City Paper, and is partnering with Michael Solomonov, among others, to open the highly anticipated Federal Doughnuts this summer. Here she talks about her best night of bartending, the most underrated bar in the city, and teaches us something we didn’t know about beer.

JGT: You took the bartender to food writer path. Give us one of your favorite bartending memories.

FELICIA: One of my best bartending nights was when the Phillies won the World Series.  I had been tending bar for much of the playoffs at the Belgian Cafe, and a huge groups of regulars had coalesced around the one TV.  When the end of the last game seemed imminent, and our victory close at hand, I began closing checks as fast as possible ’cause I knew everyone was going to go berserk.  They did indeed, and Chef Evan popped open tons of cheap champagne and we sprayed the crowd and screamed ourselves stupid.  Kisses all around. Then I rode my bike home through the debris of the Broad Street mayhem. Best night ever.

JGT: You know a lot about beer, having both written extensively about it and served it. Tell us something about beer we don’t know.

FELICIA: There’s much debate about how beer came about in the first place, as it was almost certainly an accident. There’s “wet grain” theory, and my favorite, “magic stick” theory.  As in, prehistoric people would stir the pot of grain gruel with the magic stick, which was inoculated with yeasts, and would start the conversion from porridge into sweet intoxicant. Dr. Ernie Schuyler of the Academy of Natural Sciences has some great research on the topic.

JGT: What’s the most underrated bar in the city?

FELICIA: Jose Pistolas is awesome, especially the upstairs. It’s sort of an employee lounge for the Monk’s crew (Joe Gunn is one of ours from back in the day) — great bartenders, huge beer selection, and shots of Jameson big enough to kill you.

JGT: What’s your prediction for the “Next Big Thing” on the Philadelphia bar and dining scene?

FELICIA: I’m still waiting for ramen, but the Royal Izakaya should be open soon, so we’ll see if that spawns imitators. Since I’m opening a fried chicken-and-donuts place with CookNSolo and the Bodhi Coffee guys, I’ll say gourmet donuts and fried chicken.

JGT: Ok, same question I closed with on Lazor. It’s 8 p.m. You’re being executed at midnight (needless to say, for a crime you didn’t commit). What’s your last meal?

FELICIA: My mom-mom’s manicotti and my great-grandmother’s Thanksgiving stuffing. A magnum of vintage Dom and a bottle of Cantillon Fou’ Foune. A giant pile of strawberries in season with DiBruno Bros. burrata and the best olive oil money can buy. The lobster custard served in an egg from Talula’s Table, then some king crab legs and butter. I’ll finish off with more from my mom-mom: her cream puffs, then some of Mr. Martino’s chocolate pudding. This is exactly how I plan to die, anyway.

Here’s another great interview with Felicia on Grub Street a couple of years ago.

Oh Snap! JGT Invitational Combines with City vs. City Smackdown!

So we kick off the 2nd annual JGT Summer Invitational tonight at O’Neals and City Tap House. You know how the scoring works…but there are a couple of major wrinkles this time.

The Top 15 teams after 8 weeks will earn an invite. However, there will be a 9th week for a few “wild card teams” to do so. More on that later. Any team that scores 16 or more points in the following 8 weeks will have an opportunity at the $100 bonus drawing. There will once again be opportunities provided though both wins, physical challenges at various quizzos, and facebook challenges to earn points.

Each of the following 8 weeks will have a different theme. We start this week with Food and Drink. The other 7 themes will be (in no particular order. Working on guest hosts for some rounds now. Will let you know once I get calendar lined up):

  1. Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll
  2. Denver Rules (we’ll play by the rules the Geeks Who Drink play by in Denver).
  3. I Heart the 2000s Week
  4. Sports and Entertainment
  5. The Humanities
  6. Pictures, Mysteries, and Music
  7. Ladies Week

In addition, you’ll be able to score points by playing Koob and Kristy’s quizzes on Pop Culture. The Main Event will go down on Sunday, August 7th at National Mechanics (3rd between Market and Chestnut). But this will be more than just an event for local pride and glory; you’ll also be representing the city of Philadelphia, as we will be going City vs. City with Denver, Albuquerque, and Nashville. Our Top 10 scores will be averaged against their top 10 scores, with the winner gaining the bragging rights and the rights to name the Trophy. That’s right, there will be a trophy handed out to the winning city, and the winning city gets to name that trophy. The trophy will retain that name in perpetuity. So if you don’t want to be playing in the future for the Eddie George Cup or the Dog the Bounty Hunter Cup or some other such foolishness, be ready to bring your A-game. There are a couple of other cities that we’re currently discussing this with, so don’t be surprised to see a few more towns enter the mix as we move forward.

I REALLY WANT THE BEST TEAMS TO PLAY (Jams, Lambda, I’m looking at you). The winning city not only gets the glory, but they will get to name the Local Legend Cup. Don’t do it for yourselves. Don’t do it for me. Do it for your city. City vs. City Smackdown: It’s on.

The 2nd Annual Summer Invitational

Hard to believe, but it’s time for the 2nd annual JGT Summer Invitational. It starts next week. I’m still working on venue and band, but this one is gonna be the greatest Invitational yet. I’m gonna have celebrity hosts the next few weeks, as well as a little stand up comedy between rounds at the Bards.

There’s also going to be a bit of a wrinkle. Each week will be a new theme. There will be a Sports and Entertainment Week, a I Heart the 90s Week, a Denver Pub Quiz Rules Week, a Science and Technology Week, and so on. We start next week with out Food and Drink quiz. In honor of Beer Week, all questions will be food and drink related.

I’m also going to be hosting some special quizzes throughout the summer, in addition to Mike’s special quizzes at Ugly American and Koob and Kristy’s special quizzes at Drinkers, which will also count towards points. And only the top 15 qualify. Gonna be quizzes in just about every category imaginable this summer, and it all starts Sunday, with me hosting the Wire quiz at POPE and Mike hosting the Science Fiction quiz at Ugly American. Both start at 8 p.m. I’ll have more info about the Invitational itself on Monday.

All new physical challenges, all new quizzes, and a lot of surprises. As my kind of douchey college roommate once said, “F*** the bulls***. Let’s do dis!”
