Well it’s been a crazy few weeks, with quizzes cancelled and guess hosts and omicron and the holidays and what have you, but it’s time to get back in the saddle again. We’ve got a lot going on this week. First of all, I’m excited to be back at Loco Pez tonight. Action starts at 7 PM. On to Founding Fathers on Tuesday and Dock Street Wednesday, before filling in for Carl at Birra on Thursday. Meanwhile, please note: Taryn is returning to Deli at Dwell on Thursday! They’re doing a beer tasting along with the quizzo, so should be a lot of fun. I’ll have more details soon. Of course we’re kicking off with the Winter Warz online this week as well. We’re back, baby! Here’s our schedule. To find out who wins this week, be sure to follow us on the gram.
Hey gang, our Kickoff Classic is Thursday night at 8 PM. I’ll send out the zoom invite tomorrow morning, once we know exactly how many teams we have. In the meantime, if you’e signed up and paid half of your league dues, go ahead and sign up for your schedule here.
We’re currently at 27 teams, hoping to get to 30 or 32. If you haven’t signed up and wanna play, do so now!
Here’s our dilly-o for this week. First of all, Winter Warz signups are going on for just a few more days. We’re up to 20 teams, hoping to make it to 30. We’re doing something a little different for this one. We’re kicking off with a Royal Rumble this Thursday night. Should be a lot of fun.
As for in-person quizzo, no quiz at Loco Pez on Monday. We should be back at Loco Pez next week. Our other three quizzes are still a go. I’m still testing positive for COVID, so I’m gonna hand the reins over to Carl. I’ll be back next week with bells on…and super immunity.

I did sort of a year in review in this past week’s newsletter. You can read it here. If you’re not already signed up for the newsletter, you should be. Sign up here.
We start on Monday night at Loco Pez at 20th and Bainbridge. This is such a great space, great staff, great food, fun atmosphere. It’s been a bit hit or miss week to week, but I really hope we can get this one cranking. It’s got the potential to be a great spot. It’s also very winnable for teams wanting to get a win. Founding Fathers and Dock Street will both be rocking, and Deli at Dwell has been mostly a big hit, though a bit slower than usual this past week. Birra apparently was jammin’ this past week. Maybe one of these weeks Carl will remember to take a picture of the winners. Here’s our schedule for the week, and remember to follow us on instagram.
Every year we do this, every year you guys come through BIG TIME, and every year we make some Christmas wishes come true. This is a really special thing we’ve got going here and and I can’t thank you enough. Here’s how it works: go to this spreadsheet, insert your name next to the kid you want to buy something for, then go online to buy the gift. Once you’ve got it, have it mailed to:
(Child’s first name) c/o PPEHRC Toy Drive
1505 West Allegheny Avenue
Philadelphia PA 19132
That simple, and in less than a minute you can make a world of difference. If you would rather just donate money and have me pick out the toys, that works too. You can venmo me at @jgtquizzo and put “Toy Drive” in the note or you can paypal me at johnny at johnnygoodtimes.com. Thanks as always, you guys rock!
A fun but hectic holiday week: three regular bar quizzes, a wedding quiz, a birthday party quiz, Black Friday and Small Business Saturday at the store, an article for Billy Penn, and organizing a Thanksgiving dinner for those in need with our buddy Mike (above) and the crew at PPEHRC. (That was all thanks to the donations we raised at quizzo last week.)
Some of you know Mike from having hosted some virtual quizzes last year, others from his many years in the bar biz. He’s generously cooking turkey dinners for the homeless on Wednesday, and I thought in the spirit of the season it would be nice for us to help him buy the food. So we’ll be doing 50/50 raffles again this week. One chance for $5, 3 for $10. (If you wanna donate but aren’t playing quizzo this week, just donate to @jgtquizzo on venmo and put “turkey fund” in the note.)
Heads up on the fundraiser we did a couple of weeks ago: we raised over $200, and thanks to our friends at Rittenhouse Hardware, were able to buy ten high quality space heaters for those in need. Next up: our annual toy drive, dropping tomorrow. Stay tuned.
And congrats to 7th Place (below) who pulled off the upset at Founding Fathers last week. Be sure to follow our winners in real time over on the jgtquizzo IG page. Here’s our abbreviated quizzo schedule for this week:
Just a quick update on where we stand heading into the holidays:
I have actually gotten pretty good about posting winners on the JGT Quizzo Page on Instagram, so if you wanna see what’s going on in real time, follow us there.
Shout out to everyone who participated in our 50-50 raffles last week. We raised over $200 for heaters for people in need. And thanks to our friends at Rittenhouse Hardware, we got a great deal on some good heaters. The crew over at PPEHRC picked them up yesterday. Thanks again. We’ll have our annual toy drive kicking off next week, so keep your eyes open for that.
As far as our actual quizzes:
Loco Pez is off to a nice start. We’ve been averaging about 20 people a week as we get off the ground, would love to get that up closer to 35 or so. It’s an intimate space and a LOT of fun to do a quiz there. Since it’s small I can riff more with the crowd and with no dominant team there is certainly a great opportunity for teams to get a win. Starting to see some old Sidecar teams trickle back, which has been really cool.
A great win for 7th Place at a packed Founding Fathers this past week. It’s been pretty solid there, There’s No I has established themselves as the team to beat thus far, but they got smoked this week.
Dock Street South is a) packed and b) dominated by Duane’s World. It’s a rocking good time every week, I really like our Wednesday night staff there, just a really solid spot.
On Thursdays, Taryn has been doing a great job at Deli at Dwell. I’m still going to host some quizzes there, but Taryn seems to be building a nice following. It’s a great place for a quiz: the sandwiches are terrific, and being able to buy a 4 pack or a draft beer is pretty cool. No dominant team yet.
Also on Thursdays, Birra has been somewhat hit or miss: slammed last week, mellow this week. Jitney Spears has been dominant there lately, winning four straight. Truly terrific pizza there.
As far as virtual quizzes, we’ll be getting back to those in January with our next Winter War.
And if you’re not already, get yourself signed up for the Friday Five. It’s my short, fun newsletter telling you what I’m eating, drinking and watching. I also tend to put a lot of quizzo updates on it. Next one goes out this afternoon.
Shout out to Leonard: we used his “Rhymes with Gritty” round this past week. Wanna suggest a topic for a future week? Let us know on Facebook.
And congrats to Cool Cats and Kittens, who won our Fall Brawl. Great job by our crew making this past season happen, especially J Michael and Carl. Winter Warz will kick off in January.
Have a great weekend everyone and hope to see ya next week!
Shoutout to everyone who participated in our 50-50 raffles last week: we raised $280, enough for 14 heaters for our friends at the Poor People’s Army to give out to those in need!
Last week we went international, this week it’s back to a regular quiz. We also went back to paper sheets at most of our venues. For the massive quizzes (i.e. Dock Street) I’ll probably stay online because it pushes the quiz along but for the others I’ll be moving back to the good old fashioned paper and pencil (or pen). Also, gonna start a $5 Tecate and tequila deal at Loco Pez this week. Here’s our schedule for this week. Let’s Go!
OK, I’m serious this time: we’re going to post winning team photos at the JGTQuizzo page on Instagram. Been posting them the last couple of weeks. Feel free to tag any friends you see in the pics that are already up, and we’ll have the winners of tonight’s Founding Fathers quiz as soon as the quiz wraps up. Pictured above are the Sidecardigans, who won the first ever quiz at Loco Pez G-Ho last night! We’ll be back with our next quiz next Monday at 7. The rest of the week’s schedule is below:
