Quizzo Bowl News

The run on tickets has begun. Get your team’s act together and get your tix! You can buy them from me tonight at the Good Dog at 8 p.m. and at the Bards at 10 p.m. Or you can buy them online by clicking here. The fee to purchase online is only like $1.62 or something. I am still in talks with my halftime act. Hopefully will know something in the next 24 hours. The FAQs about Quizzo Bowl are here. And remember, teams that wear uniforms or dress outrageously get VIP seating. See ya tonight!

Teams That Dress Up For QB5 Get VIP Seating

tsunami.jpg
The first few rows of seating to QBV will go not to the teams that arrive earliest but to the teams that arrive flashiest. VIP seating this year is being reserved for teams that either dress outlandishly (and yes, I will be the final arbiter of what constitutes “outlandish”) or dress in team uniforms. I saw how just about every single team dressed up for Denver’s Geek Bowl and I refuse for Philadelphia to be outdone by those clowns in the mountains. If you are curious where you can get team uniforms for a fair price, contact Triple Play Sporting Goods at 9th and Christian. (215) 923-5466. They’ve always given me a good rate and you’ll be supporting local business to boot. Also, I’m coming up with more ways to give VIP status to teams that dress up, so I’ll have more details soon. You’ve got plenty of time to pull this together. Now get crackin’!

FAQs About Quizzo Bowl V!

Alright, kids, just gonna answer a few questions I’ve been getting about Quizzo Bowl V, so you know where we stand as we get ready to head down the homestretch.
WHEN: March 28th. Doors Open at 5:00 p.m., Trivia starts at 6:00 p.m.
WHERE: New Golden Palace. 8th and Washington.
WHAT: The world’s premier quizzo competition, Quizzo Bowl V will determine who will be crowned the Best Team in Quizzo.
PRIZE MONEY: Bumping it up this year. Winning team walks with $800 cash, 2nd place gets $400, 3rd place gets $200.
ENTERTAINMENT: Haulin’ Oats, a Hall and Oates cover band, will perform between rounds. I am working on the halftime show. There is also talk of another Philly music legend making a appearance. More on that next week. Also, before the game begins, we’ll be showing the debut movie trailer to the Quizzo Documentary that was shot last year.
TICKETS: Tickets can be purchased in one of two places. Either by going online and purchasing them here, or by buying them from me at quizzo next week. The tickets are $25 (there is a $1.62 surcharge for ordering online) and that includes not only the show but also beer and wine. They will be $30 at the door.
FOOD: The New Golden Palace will be selling dim sum.
TEAM MAXIMUM: Team maximum is 8 players. Any team with less than 6 players will share a table with another small team or possibly team up. Which is fine, but we just have to maximize space so that as many people can play as want to. I am expecting a sellout, so get your tickets early!

If you have any further questions, please feel free to shoot me an email.

Quizzo News and Notes

First off, no Quizzo at the Good Dog tonight. Ok, so that means no new quiz at Bards (same quiz as Tuesday). I have a million projects going on right now and can use the extra time. As for Quizzo Bowl, a few notes:

  • Tickets are selling well. We’re up around 30 sold in the first few days, and really none of the regulars have bought yet.
  • Please get your team together and then buy tickets! It just makes things much easier for all of us. It’s gonna be packed in tight that night, so I need to maximize the seats we have. I need to make sure to not oversell of undersell, and since I’m a knucklehead, I’ll never figure it out if people keep buying tix two at a time. So try to put the team together and get your money right, if at all possible. Thanks!
  • Yes, the rumors are true. The between round entertainment will be a Hall and Oates cover band. There are also rumors of a Philly music legend also joining us for a short set. I am still working on the halftime act.
  • I will have tickets on me tonight at the Bards. Tickets are also available online.
  • Team maximum is 8 people. If you have a team of less than 6 people, expect to have another team to share your table or team up with you.

It’s Official! Haulin’ Oats Performing at Quizzo Bowl V!

oatshaul2.jpg
Last year it was Black Elvis who had people dancing in the aisles to the sounds of the King. This year Hall and Oates, the deadliest duo in Philadelphia history, are brought back to life** with a perfomance that only Haulin’ Oats can bring (no, not these guys. The other Haulin’ Oats.) Quizzo Bowl V will be the final performance of a cross country tour for Haulin’ Oats that included stops in such rock havens as Bethesda, Dover, and Wilkes-Barre. “We are going all out in a performance for the ages, and then we are retiring from the Hall and Oates impersonation business,” said singer Clark Haul of the band, which has built a cult following in the seedy, dimly lit bars of Winchester, VA. “This is going to be like Jordan retiring from the Bulls, except that we really mean it,” added guitarist Jimmy Oats. “Last Haulin’ Oats show ever,” added Larry Oats (no relation to Jimmy). “It’s going to be like when Richard Nixon retired from politics in 1962,” added drummer Brian Oats (no relation to Jimmy or Larry). “Last one. The penultimate. Wait, does penultimate mean next to last? Then nevermind. It’s the one after that one. The penultimate one will be held in the parking lot of the Germantown Acme on Friday morning, if anybody is interested.” So if you’ve ever wanted to see Winchester, VA’s FINEST Hall and Oates cover band, then Quizzo Bowl V is your final opportunity. Don’t blow it! Tickets are on sale now, and can be bought either online or from JGT at Quizzo. First tickets were sold last night. $25 a pop, and that includes booze, Haulin’ Oats, and your shot at the $800 top prize. A damn good deal. You can buy your tickets here or at quizzo.

**Wait, what? But they’re not even dead.

A few last thank yous

QB IV is now history, but before we move on, I did want to acknowledge a few folks. First of all, the good people at Zipcar for their help. People asked me, “Why didn’t you go with Philly Car Share?”, and the bottom line is that they weren’t interested in helping with QB IV and Zipcar was. In my book, score one for Zipcar for helping out local small business. Also, wanna thank the Locust Rendezvous. They were a huge help, and I hope that when you guys are thinking about where to grab your next drink, you consider the Rendezvous. An extremely friendly staff, one of the few places in Center City that serves pitchers, great prices, and a room full of characters that come free of charge. Speaking of beer, I got a lot of compliments regarding our choice of suds. Sly Fox came up huge, and $25 for all you can drink of top quality beer is almost unheard of, and I want to thank them for making that happen. The Beauty Shop Cafe, my neighborhood coffee shop, decided that they wanted to help out as well. Great spot on 20th and Fitzwater. Free wireless, great coffee, great tea, great bakes goods. The Philly Pretzel Factory gave us a couple hundred free pretzels, and though I never got time to eat one, I heard they were a hit. And to Mental Floss, for hooking us up with all of those magazines.

A few individuals I want to thank as well. Vaughn and Eric of Axis of Evil Knieval came up HUGE, not only going out to Royersford to get the kegs, but then dragging them up three flights of stairs. Vaughn then stayed and help with the myriad of duties that we were working on in the hours leading up to the show. The show literally would not have come off without all of the help I got from a number of other people as well: Suzy/Ginger (did programs and helped grade papers), Trivia Art (did scoresheets and computer scoring program, as well as posted info on his site), D-Mac (promotional help), Chip Chantry (not only helped with halftime show, but also graded papers and kept score on computer), Corey and Liz (the bartenders), the WID, and Black Elvis and the Burnin Loves. Janella, Ms. Carol, and Ms. Michael at the Blue Horizon were absolutely a joy to work with. And of course a special thanks to my Mom and Dad, who ran a million small errands in the last few days to help make sure we got all the food, sodas, napkins, etc. we needed. Finally, thank you guys for making it all the way up to North Broad to play quizzo on a cool spring night. I hope you all had as much fun as I did, without screaming and cussing as much as I did in the hours leading up to the event (much of which was captured by the documentary crew, embarrassingly enough), and hope to see you again next year when we do it again!

Alright, well I’m headed out to the ballpark to see the Phils get their first win. Last year, they were terrible in games I attended (I think like 3-11), but I’m pretty sure that’s gonna turn around this year. Anyways, I’m taking the rest of the day off, but you’ll be able to keep yourselves amused with all of these new pics from Quizzo Bowl (taken by Jonah Detofsky). Also, be sure to vote and let me know where we should do it next year. Go Phillies!
