Spring Classic to Be Held May 1st at Percy Street BBQ

A venue has been secured for the JGT Spring Invitational. It will be held on May 1st at Percy Street BBQ at 1 p.m. I picked this spot for a couple of reasons. First of all, it can hold a fair amount of people. Secondly, their BBQ is simply off the chain delicious. You guys who make the cut are in for a treat.

Their capacity is limited, however. Which means that we can only take the Top 20 teams. If you are not in the Top 20 right now, however, worry not. There is still enough time to get there. First of all, if precedent holds, a few teams in the Top 20 won’t be able to make that day and a couple more will join forces. Furthermore, and more importantly, you can quickly earn 4 points by Monday by doing a physical challenge (in this case, climbing a tree.) That will quickly put you within shouting distance, even if you haven’t scored a point yet. But if you’re not on the scoreboard by next week, you’re gonna have to go on a hell of a run to make the Top 20. I would highly advise you to get the team in gear ASAP.

JGTSpI Standings At the Halfway Mark

Here’s our top 10 scores. Teams in yellow are in the Top 10, teams in green would make the cut if the season ended today, teams in purple are on the bubble, and teams in light blue have some work to do. Not a lot of movement in the Top 10. That’s because not enough teams took advantage of the incredibly simple physical challenge last week. I’m surprised that unlike the first two Invitationals, there doesn’t seem to be much interest in the $100 drawing for the top 10 teams, or the $75 bonus prize for the team that earns the most physical challenge points. There seem to be only a couple of teams trying to win $175 in prizes for wearing a hat. It’s kind of mind blowing.

Anyways, there is a new physical challenge up. Not as easy as the last one, but not too hard either. Currently Brown Betty and Libya is Topical  are tied with the lead for physical challenge points with four. You could tie them for the lead in about 15 minutes. I will also be giving away physical challenge points this week at the actual quizzos. It’s time to get your team in gear. We are halfway through, and even if you haven’t scored yet, your team is a 2nd place finish and a couple of physical challenge points away from being right back in the thick of things. But I wouldn’t wait another week. Get your dream team out to play this week. Best shots for a win: well, other than the Khyber on Monday, I would say O’Neals on Tuesday and Ugly American on Thursday would be your best bets. Hope to see ya this week!

JGTSpI Scoreboard After 3 Weeks

Things are starting to take shape in the JGTSpI. Here are the scores. Teams in yellow are currently in the Top 10 and eligible for the bonus prize. Teams in green would earn an invite if the event were held today. Teams in purple are on the bubble. Teams in light blue would not receive an invite if the event were being held today.  The tentative date for the Spring Bash is May 1. It’s not set in stone, but that’s what I’m leaning towards. I have a very cool venue in mind, just gotta make sure the date works for them as well.

But assuming it’s May 1, there are 5 weeks left to earn yourself some points. But even if you have no points or currently are on the outside looking in, worry not. There are several ways of getting your team into the mix. First of all, there will be two BONUS POINTS QUIZZES this week. The first one is tonight at the Khyber tonight at 7 p.m. Winner walks with 8 points, 2nd place gets 4, and 3rd gets 2. Considering that there have been an average of 3 teams at the Khyber so far, you’ll be all but guaranteed points by playing tonight. The second one is Tuesday at O’Neals.

Secondly, there is a super easy physical challenge currently up on facebook. You have until Friday to get a picture up of you in a hat (any hat besides a baseball cap). Up to 4 points can be earned by any team. There will also be a prize for whatever team earns the most bonus points. So far, only a few team have taken advantage.

Point being, we’re into the nitty gritty. Time to show and prove. Plenty of chances to earn points this week. If you want to earn an invite, I wouldn’t let this week’s quizzes pass by without trying to earn some points.

NOTE: Mike Minion will be hosting an All-Sports quiz next Friday, April 8th at the Ugly American. Details forthcoming.

Scores of the JGTSpI After Two Weeks

Here are the scores from the JGTSpI. Teams in yellow are in the Top 10 and are in the running for the $100 prize bonus drawing. Teams in green would probably qualify if the Invitational ended today (depending on venue). Teams in blue would be on the outside looking in. Of course, almost no-one has taken advantage of the physical challenges. Two have expired, but the easiest one is still available until Wednesday, and your team can earn up to 4 points by having people wear their school colors. They’d also be the frontrunners for the $50 bonus prize that goes to the top physical challenge team. In addition to the online physical challenges, I will be doling out some bonus points at quizzo this week. So bring those 1970s nickels. Two great chances to earn points tonight, at the Khyber at 7 p.m. and Westbury at 9 p.m.

Spring Invitational Scores Posted

Week One scores are posted. Teams in the yellow are in the top 10 (remember the Top 10 teams are in the running for a $100 bonus gift certificate). The other teams all scored points last week. No-one did the physical challenge, so I am leaving it up and also offering a 2nd physical challenge. That means that for one week only you can score an incredible 8 bonus points. That will not happen again. Week 2 begins tonight with an 80s quiz at the Khyber at 7 p.m. To be honest, that should be an easy win for anyone who gets a halfway decent team together. If you’re looking to play with the big boys, I recommend the Westbury at 9 p.m.

The Spring Invitational Has Begun!

That’s right folks, it officially began last night at the Westbury and will continue tonight! Teams earn 5 points for a win, 3 points for a 2nd place finish, and 1 point for 3rd. Team can also earn points for physical challenges. The first one has just been posted! After a couple of months, the Top 20 teams receive an invite to play in the Big Spring Event. The first couple of these were a load of fun, so get your best team together and come on out to quizzo! I’ll reveal the locale for the Big Spring Event next week.

TONIGHT: Four different places to earn points, including a couple where you’ve got a great shot. We start at O’neals at 8 p.m. Been kind of quiet the last couple of weeks, so this is a great place to get a win. $3.50 margaritas and a $50 GC for first place. I then move to City Tap House at 10:15 p.m. They will be having a Mardi Gras party in the bar area, so we are gonna be playing in the back room. We’ve done it a couple of times and it actually went pretty well. I have a feeling that getting through the bar is going to be a nightmare, but remember if you walk around the side outdoors you can enter into the back room, or at least the back of the bar area, so you won’t have to deal with that craziness.

Keep in mind also that Koob and Kristy will be hosting their POP! Quiz tonight at the Raven, and yes the winner of that can earn points in the JGTSpI. That begins at 8 p.m. and Kristy has promised a rather risque 50/50 round.

In Manayunk, Mike returns to the Terrace Taproom. Action starts at 8 p.m. He’s gonna be doing his Oscars quiz tonight, so be sure to study. I actually pulled a few out when I played last night by studying beforehand. Hope to see ya tonight!
