This Week in Worthless Knowledge: The DB Cooper Episode

article-2021707-0D3C060400000578-109_306x423

On this date in 1971, a man named Dan Cooper skyjacked a plane in Oregon (due to an AP reporter getting some misinfo, he was identified as DB in the next day’s paper. The name DB stuck.) He got away with $200,000 in small unmarked bills. After parachuting out the back of the plane, he was never seen again, and only a small portion of the money was found. So what happened? We discuss on this week’s edition of This Week in Worthless Knowledge. You can listen here on itunes or if you don’t have itunes you can listen here.

We also need to know: does Johnny look more like Jim Thome or does Nat look more like Ashton Kutcher. Let us know on our Facebook page.

A Quizzo Answer in This Week’s Podcast?

thisweek

Yep. There is an impossible round question for tonight found in there somewhere. You can listen here in itunes or if you’re not on that you can listen to it online here.

So far we’ve had over 600 downloads of our podcast. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to give a listen. And it seems to be growing each week, to the point where we’re starting to think of ourselves as “podcast famous”. Which is a thing I just made up. So if you’re a fan of worthless knowledge, ridiculous hypotheticals, and listening to a couple of guys who are podcast famous, you’re going to enjoy the podcast.

Final Scores of JGTAI

autumninvite

Here they are. Teams in yellow made the cut, teams in blue are on the bubble, and teams in red still have hope: next week is Wild Card week, where any team that wins earns an automatic invite. As for bubble teams, if any teams that made the cut elect not to play, you’ll earn their spot. We typically have a few teams that can’t make it, so there’s still hope. Invites will start going out this afternoon.

JGTAI Scores With Less Than a Week To Go!

autumninvite

Well here we go. Our scores with less than a week left to play (these do not include last night at Sidecar).  7 quizzes left to earn yourself an invite. If you’re in the blue, you need to get your team together this week and make it happen. As of right now, some illustrious teams such as Popesack, Encyclopedophiles, and #1 Government Team Competitor are on the outside looking in. It’s also worth noting that the staff team at Industry, with that win last week, is within striking distance of an upset appearance.

So, in addition to quizzes this week, you can also earn points on facebook. Just post a picture of yourself in the midst of some fall foliage. You can also earn your team an extra 5 points by leaving a positive review on itunes for our podcast (the more reviews we get, the better our search results.) Just shoot me a line and let me know that the reviewer was you when you’re done.

And of course you can earn points by finishing first, second or third this week. Your best bet to score a win? Probably Industry, though City Tap House is also up for grabs plenty of times.

Then there is the last gasp effort, which is wild card week next week. Any team that finishes first earns an automatic invite. But if you don’t want to leave it to chance, I would get some physical challenges done and get your team out to quizzo this week. The Big Event takes place on November 22nd at the City Tap House and will feature live music from the John Train band (who are awesome).

Listen to Our Latest Podcast!

thisweek

The new This Week in Worthless Knowledge podcast is up. You can download it here on itunes, or you can listen here on Nat’s blog if you don’t use itunes. We’ve worked out some audio tweaks, and I think the show is really getting funny. We talked about Charles van Doren, and how much I would need to be offered to cheat on Jeopardy (and how doing so would ruin my quizzo career). We also discussed Guy Fawkes, Vlad the Impaler, what animal you’d take into space, and why our wives don’t listen to our podcast.  If you haven’t already, be sure to like us on Facebook as well.

And a quick favor to ask: if you enjoy the podcast, please leave a review on itunes. As an added (shameless) bonus, I will give 3 points in the JGTAI to any player who posts a review on itunes. At the very least, please give it a 5-star rating on there. Thanks, and hope you enjoy it!

This Week In Worthless Knowledge

thisweek

Odds are, you love worthless knowledge. Otherwise, I highly doubt you would be spending any time on a quizzo website. Well good news, now you can get some of that worthless knowledge outside of the bar.

My buddy Nat “The Truth” Jones and I used to host a radio show together on the Eastern Shore of Virginia 15 years ago. Well, thanks to the wonders of mondern technology, we can do so again, despite the fact that he lives in Boston and I’m here in Philly. So we’ve decided to make this show about worthless knowledge, and more specifically, worthless knowledge that happened this week. You can grab the podcast off of itunes here. If you don’t have itunes, you can still listen online here.

On this week’s show (our 2nd), we discussed Sir Walter Raleigh’s head, which his wife carried around in a velvet bag for 29 years after he was decapitated on October 29th, 1618. The Sistine Chapel ceiling painting was completed on November 1st, 1512, so we discussed which would rather see: Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel or MIchaelangelo, the 6-foot tall crime fighting turtle. It’s a pretty entertaining podcast, so I hope you’ll subscribe. We’re gonna do a new one each week. And be sure to follow us on Facebook, where we’ll be posting more strange, unusual, and worthless knowledge all through the week.

The Oldest Tradition in Philadelphia (American?) Quizzo Continues This Week

quizzohalloween1

It’s time for the 13th Annual Halloween Spooktacular. Yep, we’ve been doing this one since the days of Frank Clement’s Tavern, since the youngsters playing at City Tap House were 8-years old, since Gervase was hosting quizzo, SINCE EVERYONE IN PHILLY KNEW WHO GERVASE WAS!

Anyways, as always, there will be questions about killers, zombies, vampires, and pure unbridled terror, and maybe even a bit of candy to give away. Action starts tonight at Sidecar at 9:30 p.m. Only gonna do one quiz this week. (We’ll be back to two quizzes next week.) Hope to see you at quizzo this week…if you DARE!

JGTAI Scores at the Midway Point

autumninvite

As we head into the 2nd half of the season, things are starting to get interesting. Here are our scores. A few teams went all out on last week’s Facebook challenge and chalked up some serious points. I just posted a new challenge on the page if you’re looking to rack up some points this week.

No quiz tonight due to what’s going on at North Star and the Eagles game. I’m only writing one quiz this week and we’ll operating our normal schedule Tuesday-Thursday. Your best shot to get a win? That’s a tough one. We see the most parity at Industry, though Imaginary Pablo blew it out of the water there this past week. The Tap House is a gamble, as when the Jesters don’t show up, it’s anyone’s ballgame.

So get your a-squad together and get out to quizzo this week, as we head down the home stretch, and only the best teams will earn an invite to the Big Event on November 22nd.

Quizzo for the Cause: PAWS

10620553_10152681503171948_6547453370161781567_n

Starting on Monday, October 12th and running through Thursday the 15th, I will be collecting money at quizzo for PAWS, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society. Jon K, a former regular at Industry until his team got all married up and fell apart, is raising money for the upcoming PAWS Mutt Strut, and I thought it would be really cool if we could help him out. I interviewed him a bit about the program that we’ll be raising money for.

JGT: Tell us a bit about the PAWS Mutt Strut.

Jon K: The Mutt Strut is an annual tradition where dogs and the people who love them walk the scenic route in The Navy Yard to raise funds and awareness for PAWS’ efforts to save Philadelphia’s homeless animals. There are dogs available for adoption at the event and they can be “rented” for a donation! Last year, PAWS raised $112,000 and are looking to surpass that this year.

JGT: What first got you involved with the organization?

Jon K.: I first got involved with PAWS about 7 years ago. I had lots of spare time and not a lot of money to spend, so going to hang out with dogs all day on Saturday seemed like a win-win. It turns out that working with animals is pretty rewarding. As I got busier and found myself with less time and more money, I shifted my focus from cleaning cat cages and walking dogs to fundraising for the Mutt Strut and fostering kittens.

JGT: What does PAWS do with the money raised?
Jon K.: PAWS is 100% donor funded, so everything they do is dependent on the generosity of supporters. The money raised for the Mutt Strut will help fund lifesaving initiatives like adoption and foster care programs, spay and neuter surgeries, low-cost vaccinations, and other community-based initiatives, all of which help reduce and will ultimately eliminate the unnecessary killing of Philadelphia’s homeless, abandoned, and unwanted animals. 91¢ of every dollar goes directly to lifesaving efforts, and it costs an average of $264 to rescue one animal, so it adds up quick!
JGT: How can other people get involved?

Jon K.: There are tons of ways to get involved. PAWS now has 3 locations: the original adoption center in Old City, a low-cost clinic in Grays Ferry, and a brand new clinic on Grant Avenue in the northeast that is both a clinic and an adoption center. All of them run on volunteers. You can volunteer to clean cages, transport animals, walk dogs, and lots of other things that need to be done. There’s also fostering, which is a HUGE help. You take an animal from the shelter to raise in your home until it is healthy enough or old enough to be adopted. This frees up the space to rescue another animal, so every fostered pet saves 2 lives. And finally, like all non-profits, the biggest help is money.
JGT: When are you guys going to start playing quizzo at the Industry again?

Jon K.: Trust me, I would love to, but everyone we know and played with keeps getting pregnant and moving out of the city. I have not given up hope of making new friends that will actually hang out with me.
