The Triple Lindy

I was shocked, SHOCKED, at how many people have never seen Back to School, the Citizen Kane of Rodney Dangerfield movies as far as I’m concerned. It is a must see. And as you can see in this video, it was also the first and last time the Triple Lindy was ever pulled off successfully.

10 Things You Know That Charlie Doesn’t

charlie.jpg
First of all, about that loss last night: It was catastrophic. There is a huge difference between being down 2 games and being down 3 games in September. Huge. The Phils go to NYC to play the Mets this weekend. It is, for the Phils, a playoff series, nothing less. It is a best of 3 series, and if the Phils don’t win two, their season is done. Period.

2ndly, Duane’s World regular and tortured Phils fan Johnnie supplied me with a list of 8 things that any casual Phils fan with half a brain knows that Charlie doesn’t. I added a couple at the end.

  1. Someone pitching effectively, with obviously good stuff, dosen’t have to come out of the game because the next batter hits from the opposite side.
  2. Pat Burrell is not the worst fielder in the starting line-up. Watch your first baseman for a while.
  3. A tired Brett Myers or Cole Hammels is a more effective pitcher than anyone in your bullpen, save Lidge and Romero.
  4. Pinch-hitting So Taguchi for a pitcher does not increase the chances of getting someone on base.
  5. Playing a hunch once in a while is great. It brings an element of surprise. Repeating the same move redundantly reduces the chances it will succede.
  6. Jason Werth hits right-handed pitching better than Jenkins or Bruntlett. He’s not perfect, but he’s earned the role of every day starting rightfielder.
  7. Ryan Madson can never be trusted when the game is on the line
  8. Replacing Pat Burrell with So Taguchi in the later innings actually worsens the outfield defense.
  9. Ones I added:

  10. Eric Bruntlett should never, under any circumstances, start a game for the Philadelphia Phillies. Never. Never. Never.
  11. The team needs a defensive 1st base coach to explain to Ryan Howard what to do in any situation. He is not only slow and clumsy in the field, he is dumb in the field as well. His blunder last night of throwing to 2nd with the bases loaded would have honestly been stupid if a Little Leaguer did it.

Feel free to vent about last night’s devastating loss or add more things to the list below.

Why All the Fuss?

Was I the only one taken aback by how Sarah Palin was essentially sabotaged by the mainstream media yesterday? There were rumors that her daughter had given birth to her 5th baby (not true) and that she used to belong to a fringe political party (not true) Yes, her 17 year old daughter is pregnant, to which anyone with any sense can only reply: who cares? If she had encouraged her daughter to get an abortion when she is firmly pro-life, then yes, it would have been a major story. But she didn’t and, well, it isn’t. I think her daughter being pregnant has about the same amount of relevance in this race as Jamie Lynn Spears getting pregnant. None. As for the “radical” political party she supposedly belonged to, well, she didn’t (unless you count recent Republican positions as radical). Her husband did. And, unless you count Libertarians as radical, then the Alaskan Independence Party is not really all that fringe (especially compared with the Weathermen). The only thing that smells all that fishy to me is the whole Safety Commissioner Dismissal, which is about on par with plagiarizing speeches and law review articles.

Listen, I stand against pretty much every thing Sarah Palin stands for politically. But all this drummed up horses*** about how she’s a terrible pick is ridiculous. These out of control attacks on her about pointless minutae reek of the type of sexism that Clinton complained about in the primaries. At the time, I thought she was being a whiner. Now I’m not so sure.

The Reviews are in, and…they’re OK!

90210 and the New Kids on the Block both make their comeback on the same day? I feel young again! Reviews for the New Kids album are…ok. Newsday says: Not only does the Boston quintet’s first new album in 14 years surpass the usual cobbled-together-so-we-can-tour reunion record, it is actually the best album of their multiplatinum career. Woo-hoo! I knew it! I knew it would be great! But wait, Radar isn’t so sure: It’s mature, we suppose, and it continues throughout the album, but it only succeeds in making things uneasily skeezy…In fact, it’s almost all voyeurism and sad attempts at acting horny! Truth be told, I kind of like the Summertime song (above). No seriously, it’s not that bad. Oh, and get this: they recently slammed the Backstreet Boys! “Backstreet’s records sound the same as before – their music didn’t evolve like ours has,” said Danny. Oh boy, I hope this doesn’t turn into a Biggie Smallz-2Pac situation, but I’m afraid that’s just where this is heading.

Live From Salisbury

Kicking it in Surprising Salisbury Maryland. Had a great weekend at home and am on my way back up now. Went to a cookout celebration for my homie Matt (who I mentioned in last weeks Metro article) who recently got engaged, officially making me the Last of the Mohicans. I hope somebody throws me a cookout if I go on a 3rd date. Anyways, I tried to convince Mary to marry me for the 100th time, still with no success, though I think I may be weakening her resolve. Spent all day yesterday on the Barrier Islands. Absolutely perfect day on the beach. Also won two games of bocce. Question of the week coming soon, then I’m back on the road again.
