Possible Final Four Scenarios for our Bracket-tacular

Well, I stopped paying attention weeks ago, and with one team left in the Final Four, I don’t even think I have a chance to finish 50th. I am currently 79th out of 92 teams. There are some people who still have hope, however. Here’s how it could play out.

KENTUCKY. If Kentucky beats Louisville and then beats Ohio State in the Championship, then a team called JGT Bracket-tacular will win…despite having picked Missouri to make the Final 4. If Kentucky beats Kansas in the finals, then Julie will win.

LOUISVILLE. If Louisville beats Kentucky and then beats OSU in the finals, then James’s Bracket and Tiger Lily will finish tied for first and it will come down to a tiebreaker. If Louisville beats Kansas in the finals, then Julie will win. (Nobody in the pool had Louisville winning it all.)

OHIO STATE. If Ohio State beats Kentucky or Louisville in the Final game, then James Bracket will win outright.

KANSAS. If Kansas wins the title by beating Kentucky, then the Braqrat will take the title. However, if Kansas beats Louisville, then Anyone But Duke will win. I am sure their tourney was already made in the first round either way.

Grandpa Gene Wins Mad Men Quiz at Trestle Inn

We had an awesome time at the Trestle on Sunday with our Mad Men quiz. In fact (dare I say it?) I kind of think the quiz was a little better than the premiere (was it just me, or was the premiere kind of boring?). Anyways, Grandpa Gene (above) came away with an thrilling 130-126 win over Popesack Resurrected (It was a 5 round quiz). Great bar, great drink specials, and a pretty damn fun quiz. We’re going to do an All-Philly quiz there at the end of April. Details coming soon. Here is the products round for those of you who missed it.

1. What product is promoted by comedian Jimmy Barrett?

2.  What diet cola did Pepsi make in 1963, in the show inspiring an ad that featured an Ann Margaret lookalike singing the opening number to Bye Bye Birdie?

3. Peggy’s first account is as a junior copywriter with this skin care company.

4. What airline do they advertise for right after a horrific plane crash, dropping Mohawk Air in the process?

5. What clothing company did Don give an ad featuring a nude model flashing the audience and the headline limit your exposure?

6. There were some who thought that this carmaker,  owned by General Motors, bought product placement, until Betty vomited in the car’s interior.

7. When Ken Cosgrove landed this account early in season 3, results were disastrous.

8. Perhaps the memorable pitch to date was one for this product in the season one finale, which he calls a “Time machine. It takes us to a place where we ache to go again.” (two word answer)

9. What product does Betty purchase for a dinner party, not realizing that Don had told Duck previously that Betty was the market for said product?

10.  In the famous drunken life cereal pitch in season 4, Don Pitches seven different slogans, including the one they pick. Name as many as you can for one point each.

International Quiz Tonight; News for Next Week

Great turnouts most of the week this week. Hopefully we keep that going tonight. We start at Ugly American at 8 p.m., then move to Bards at 10:15. Judging by last night’s results, this is one of the easier quizzes I’ve written in a while. All international questions.

As for next week, well, I’m headed out of town for a much needed respite from you nerds. Therefore, next week will be “Guest Host Week”. On Monday and Tuesday, Koob and Kristy will be hosting a Pop Culture quiz. On Wednesday and Thursday, Mike Minion will be hosting an Un-Pop Culture quiz. So if you read US Weekly and know all of the words to Ke$ha’s top hits, come out on Monday and Tuesday. If you’re a bit more high-brow, and want questions about physics and astronomy, come out to Mike Minion’s quiz on Wednesday-Thursday. Oh, and with Opening Day next week, I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw a few baseball questions as well. Should be an interesting week.

Phillies Facts, Baseballs Dipped in Horsecrap, and a Great Trivia Question

A lot going on in sports right now that I think you guys are gonna dig.

  • Great trivia question: Who is the only person to play for both the Phillies and the Eagles? Find out here.
  • I went on WIP on Tuesday night to talk some baseball and ended up telling a quick story about bringing Kobe Bryant into the water with dolphins. Click here and then click on the “1 a.m. hour” part of the podcast to give it a listen.

Week 2 Springvitational Scores Are Now Posted

Here are the scores through Week 2. This includes the Mad Men quiz but not Monday night’s results. Teams in yellow are in line for a bonus prize, teams in blue are looking good, and teams in green need to get crackin’. Keep in mind, the best way to score bonus points is to record a high score. Scores of 100 or higher get 2 bonus points, while scores of 90 of higher get one. See ya this week!

International Week Continues Tonight

International Week rolls on at JGT’s quizzes, starting at O’Neals at 8 p.m. I would suggest bringing a geography person for your team as well as a girl who likes pop culture. Both will be helpful. We move to City Tap House at 10:15, where we’ll be doing a fundraiser. No pressure, whatever you want to donate is fine, but it will all go to a very cool cause. Hope to see ya tonight!

Haiti Fundraiser Tonight at City Tap House

The Penn Nursing Task Force on Haiti will be asking for donations tonight at the City Tap House. Here is a bit of info on the project:

We are joining a long term project to develop the nursing education program in Haiti. The project began at Regis College in Boston. Currently no university level nursing programs exist in Haiti and health literacy in general is very low. Regis college is bringing Haitian nurses (currently educated at the equivalent of an associates degree) to Boston to receive a graduate level education. These nurses have committed to return to Haiti and build a university level nursing education program. The Haitian nurses will complete their masters degree partially on line, partially in Boston, and partially in Haiti when nursing professors from U.S. universities travel there to teach. Faculty from Penn Nursing are volunteering to teach the Haitian nurses in Boston this year and Haiti in the future. This will require unpaid leave for weeks or more, and significant expenses for travel and accommodations. The Penn Nursing Task Force on Haiti is raising money to support the teachers who volunteer so that we will be able to send more faculty.

There will be a raffle at tonight’s quiz as well. Among the gift’s will be a gift certificate to Chabaa Thai Bistro, free tickets to a show at the International House, and two bottles of chianti. Gonna be several questions on Haiti as well. Might want to study up on your Haiti knowledge if you’re gonna play at CTH. Hope to see ya tonight, and bring a few bucks to help this wonderful cause. Action starts at 10:15 p.m.

International Week Starts Tonight

It’s International Week at quizzo this week, with all questions having a foreign flavor, from French actresses to Egyptians pyramids to Canadian bacon. The week will include a Haitian fundraiser at the City Tap House on Tuesday. Details forthcoming. Action starts tonight at North Star Bar at 7 p.m. 1/2 off hummus, 1/2 off mussels, and $3 Kenzingers. We move to Sidecar. Back upstairs this week, I’m pretty sure. Action starts at 9:15 p.m. A dollar off all bitter beers. Hope to see ya tonight!
