Where’s John’s Rum Cruises at O’Neals
1980s Hip Hop in Philadelphia
Here is an absolute gem at least a few of you will appreciate. It’s a documentary of Philadelphia hip-hop. The best part is that the doc itself was apparently shot in the 1980s. Focuses on Will Smith, Schoolly D, and other local luminaries from the good ol’ days. And needless to say, even if you’re not a rap fan, you’ll enjoy the shots of 1980s Philadelphia. Thanks to Steve K. for bringing this to my attention. If anyone ever sees anything cool Philly related or quizzo related, please bring it to my attention
.
Part Two of the doc is here.
Question of the Week
JGT Drops Vicious Battle Rap Skewering Denver
You all may remember a few months ago when Denver “comedian” Adam Cayton-Holland ripped Philly a new one. Needless to say, I had to answer back with a vicious attack of my own. But getting married cuts into one’s battle rap time, so it took me a little while to respond. It was well worth the wait. I rip Denver and the other cities participating a new one, as well as Cayton-Holland and our good friends John Dicker and the Slump Busters, who travelled to Philly last year for Quizzo Bowl. Since I know no-one in Philly really knows anything about Albuquerque and Colorado Springs, so here’s a little background:
- Albuquerque has a big hot air balloon event every year. They also have a major meth problem, as is reflected in the show Breaking Bad.
- The video of the car crash in Colorado Springs is amazing. Basically, the people there are so dumb that even though they saw 15 cars crashed on the side of the road, they kept trying to drive up this one hill covered with ice and inevitably crashing. As for the lights comment, the city is so broke they have to cut off their street lights at night.
So 4 members of Sofa Kingdom, myself, and my buddy Carl are headed out to Denver to regulate at Geek Bowl V at the end of the month. We will represent the birthplace of quizzo proudly. Last year we finished 4th. That wasn’t good enough. This year we plan on finishing First.
Needless to say, the rap is so badass that Denverites have either responded weakly or not at all. While their local alternative weekly lamely tries to rip me, on the Geeks Who Drink website only two people have dared challenge my verbal artistry. So it looks like we are not only going to win Geek Bowl, we are going to rip out Denver’s souls while doing so.

Quizzo News and Notes
Several things to look forward to in the next few weeks. First of all, big Quizzo Bowl announcements coming next week. Venue and band will both be revealed. Also, I am still looking for sponsors. If anyone is interested in donating either prizes or having their name on the marquee, so to speak, shoot me a line. This is gonna be a great event with about 300 people in attendance, and website activity always shoots up around Quizzo Bowl time. All I ask is that you don’t spell the event “Quzzo Bowl” on the banners.
Also, in case you were unaware, me and a crew of geeks are heading back out to Denver at the end of the month. The Denverites ripped Philly a few months ago. Well, I’ve been working on a battle rap since. It’s finally written, and hope to get the video done and up by early next week. I’m not sure Denver and the surrounding suburbs will ever recover from the verbal assault I am about to launch.
As for regular quizzo next week, Mike Minion’s got a pretty interesting quiz going down at the Westbury on Monday. The entire quizzes topic is Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n’ Roll, and in addition to the questions Mike will have some rock music to give away at the quiz. (After checking with our lawyers, we discovered that he is not allowed to give away either sex or drugs at the quiz, however.) As for my quiz, another week of the unusual insanity, plus more Face Off, where some players win within seconds, and others get booed after blowing easy questions, such as the players involved in this exchange at the Rendezvous…Q: How does Humpty Hump like his oatmeal? Player 1: Runny Me: No Player 2: Extra Thick? Me: No, lumpy. Humpty likes it Lumpy. Crowd: Booooo!
Anyhow, I hope everyone has a great weekend and we’ll see ya next week!
