Sports Quiz Friday Night

Mike Minion is hosting an All-Sports quiz at the Ugly American on Friday night. Here are the details.

Calling All Sports Fans!

Sports is all about competition. To quote the opening speech from Patton: “Americans love a winner, and will not tolerate a loser.” Well, to win, you have to play.

The Ugly American is the place for winners to be this Friday night. Why? First and foremost, the Phillies will be on the big screen TVs. If that’s not enough, there’s gonna be an All Sports quiz with plenty of cool prizes to be won. And since the season just got underway, the theme is a tribute to baseball, with an interesting twist.

To be a successful quizzo player, all you have to do is answer questions. But to be successful in the major leagues, a player has to be able to hit, run, field and throw. So the first 4 rounds of questions will be: Hitting, Running, Fielding, and Throwing. The twist is these rounds will be about any sport other than baseball. The 5th and final round will be 10 challenging questions on baseball (and you can probably count on a few of them being about the Phils).

Now, you might be saying, “I don’t want to answer questions when the Phillies are on – I just wanna watch the game.” Believe me, I understand exactly how you feel. So, all the questions will be asked BETWEEN innings. One round of quizzo = one inning of the game. We’ll start after the first inning is over, and the last question will be asked at the end of the 6th. The final scores and prizes will be awarded during the 7th inning stretch.

And what prizes!. In addition to the normal gift certificates, I’ll give away: a Wade Boggs baseball bat, a pair of Everlast training gloves, a Blackburn bicycle pump, a baseball that tells you how fast you throw, a sleeve of golf balls, an amazing Nerf football with fins, and a bunch of baseball caps. The winning team gets a solid (plastic) gold (colored) trophy to take home, too. Best of all, corn dogs will be one dollar during the quiz.

Step up to the plate and prove you know your sports.  Starting time is 8 p.m. See you at the Ugly American.

Quizzo Tonight (Plus Other Quizzo News and Rumors)

Next week is gonna be like whoa off the charts. More on that in a minute. But first let’s get to tonight. We start at the Vous, where the Jams have been on a hot streak, winning an incredible 6 of their last 7, their only loss coming by one point. Can you knock them off? Action starts at 6:15 p.m. On to the Black Sheep, where Duane’s World has been on fire as of late, winning 4 of the last 5. Action starts at 8. An interesting quiz this week. Fairly easy for 3 rounds, but the 4th seems to be a bit of a doozy. I would highly suggest showing up at both bars early. I expect pretty good crowds tonight.

In other news, a few things to keep in mind. First of all, there are rumors of me hosting a few quizzes at the Kimmel Center later next week. Details coming soon.

Also, remember that the Quizzo documentary is showing on Monday night at the Painted Bride.

This Friday is an all-sports quiz at the Ugly American with Mike Minion. Action starts at 8. More details coming soon.

And tomorrow night (Thursday) remember that there is a $35 bounty on the Steak Em Up. I’d love to see someone beat them in their last quiz before the movie comes out.

Attention Quizzo Cheaters

I was  born at night, but it wasn’t last night. I’ve been doing this a while, and I spend a considerable amount of times during my quiz looking for cheaters. You may ask, “Why? It’s just a pub quiz.” I understand that, but I take pride in what I do, and I want every team that shows up at one of my quizzes knowing that the game is on the up and up. Those people spend their hard-earned money for a night out to play my quiz, and they deserve to take a fair quizzo where everything is on the level. When you take out your cell phone, plant guys at the next table who have one, or have a teammate make a late round run to the bathroom and return with quite a few answers, you are being disrespectful not only of me, but of every other team and person in the bar. I know that sounds harsh, but I see it as similar to fixing a sporting event. Once people start thinking things aren’t on the up and up, they lose interest. Ask boxing.

I have worked hard over the years to build not only a business, but a community. On that front, I feel like I have been successful. I was excited to start a quiz in University City because I felt like I could build upon that community. And after a few months, on every other level, the quiz at City Tap House is a success. We have a terrific turnout, they have a great staff that I enjoy working with, and I’ve gotten a chance to meet some great new people and new teams, most of whom would never consider cheating. To the people who do: please stop. You’ll gain much more respect in this community by playing hard and for being cool than you ever will for winning, especially if the winning is achieved through nefarious means. Furthermore, if I suspect it again, I will call any teams involved out on the site. And once you get that stigma attached to your team, you might as well start shopping around for another quizzo. I hope it doesn’t have to come to that. Semper vigilius-JGT

*I don’t want this post to call into question the results of last night’s quiz. The team that won last night sat right beside me and absolutely did not cheat.  This is just a recurring problem I have noticed over the past few weeks.

Big Money Tuesday

We kick into gear tonight at O’Neals at 8 p.m. and City Tap House at 10:15 p.m. Big upset at O’Neals last week rocketed Mr. Mapother into contention for a Top 10 spot. Can they pull it off again?Meanwhile, things are pretty wide open at the CTH, with 5 different winners in the past 5 weeks.

In other quizzo news:

  • There is a $35 bounty on Steak Em Up at the Bards this Thursday night.

Charles Wins JGT Bracket-Tacular; Battle Rages for 50th

Charles R. forgot to fill in a champion in the JGT Bracekttacular. Those are the kinds of mistakes that normally kill you. Not this year. None of the 77 contestants had either UConn or Butler winning the championship, so Charles has won the $75 Gift card to City Tap House. Powers finished 2nd, and we had a tie for third between Power Point Jon and MAAC Attack. Therefore, the 3rd place tie will be determined by the tiebreaker. Jon guessed 145 points scored in the Final, MAAC Attack has 150 total points scored. Whomever comes closest to the total will win 3rd. Here are all of the final scores.

There is plenty of Drama in the race for 50th place. Remember, the 50th place finisher gets a $50 gift certificate to Plough and the Stars. We had a 5-way tie for 50th, so it will all come down to points scored during tomorrow night’s game. However, It’s Middle My Dear did not fill out their tiebreaker points, so they have been eliminated. So there are 4 people vying for 50th. Whomever comes the closest to the total points scored tomorrow night will win the $50 GC. The four players and their total points in the championship.

  1. Dunphy’s Stache 147
  2. Brieket 139
  3. Whatever Happened to Phil 138
  4. The Perfect Brackets 132

As for my brackets? Another remarkably disappointing finish. 74th out of 79. Last year I finished 71st, and 2 years ago I finished 95th. I should probably take next year off. Anyways, top 2 guys get a hold of me via facebook or email (johnny@johnnygoodtimes.com) and let me know where to send your Gift Certificates. Thanks for playing eveyrbody!

Mike Minion to Host a Sports Quiz Next Friday Night

Mike Minion might be out at the Westbury and stepping aside for construction at Terrace Taproom, but he’s still gonna be doing special quizzes. The next one will be next Friday night at Ugly American. Gonna be a sports quiz. Looking forward to it. Here’s the details from Mike.

If you every found yourself watching Australian rules football on ESPN2 at 3 in the morning, have I got a quiz for you. To mark the opening of the season, I’m hosting a special 5 round “Tribute to Baseball” quiz next Friday night at 7 PM at The Ugly American. The first four rounds will be: Hitting, Fielding, Running and Throwing – the tools every player needs. The catch is that NONE of these questions in these rounds will have anything to do baseball (but they will all be about sports). After all, there are LOTS of other sports that require these skills as well. The 5th and final round will be ten challenging question on the game of baseball.

The prize is $40 to the winners and $20 for second. In addition, I’ll have a few sports-related prizes for the victors and a few more to give out randomly. The Ugly American will be putting some of their beers on special just for this event. Also, the $1 corn dog special will be on, and so will the Phillies game. So why not come on out and root for the home team with other sports nuts and try to take home the championship belt? See ya there!

Final Four Week at Quizzo

Don’t freak out, folks. Final Four Week does not mean a lot of questions about basketball. It means a lot of questions about the states of Kentucky, Connecticut, Virginia, and Indiana. It means questions about Finals and questions about Fours. Questions about Houston, and questions about famous Butlers and famous Bulldogs. You get the picture. Gonna be a fun quiz. (On Thursday, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if there were a few baseball questions thrown in the mix too, to celebrate Opening Day.)
