Literature and Film Week

Well, the people have spoken and thanks to their vote on facebook, we will be doing Literature (and films based on books) this week at quizzo. Going to be a really fun quiz to write and to play (assuming, of course, that you enjoy books). Action starts tonight at North Star at 7 p.m. If you are looking to score a win in the JGTSpI, the best places to do so are still North Star, O’Neals, and Industry. Half off mussels and hummus, and $3 Kenzos.

On to Sidecar at 9:30. Always a great vibe and dollar off all bitter beers. Hope to see ya tonight!

1990s Week Wraps Up Tonight (With a Somewhat Easy Quiz and $3 Beers)

Ok, so the first quiz this week was kind of brutal. I don’t want bruised egos at all of my venues, so for the 2nd half of the week I’ve lightened it up a little. Expect some shootouts tonight. We start at the Industry at 6:30 p.m. If you are looking for a win, this is where you want to go. Furthermore, if you love hamburgers, this is where you want to go. In a city that has seen hamburgers go up to $18 (with fries costing you extra), to get a burger as delicious as the one at Industry for $8 (that includes fries) is pretty incredible. I highly, highly recommend it. Had one last week and it was great. On top of that, we’ll have $3 Flying Fish and $3 Elysian Bifrost Ale. That’s a tough deal to beat. If you haven’t been to Industry yet, tonight’s quiz is a great excuse to go.

On to the Bards at 9 p.m. $3 Lagers and plenty of great beers on draft, and a chance to knock off the Jesters of Tortuga (aka Steak Em Up).

Meanwhile, you can now vote for next week’s quizzo topic on facebook. And remember, if you’re trying to earn bonus points for the JGTSpI, you can do so by posting a picture of you with a flower on facebook. Hope to see ya tonight!

Big Money Tuesday Tonight; All 1990s Questions

An extremely fair quiz, since all of you lived through the 90s. Both of last night’s quizzes were determined by a single question. The first three rounds weren’t particularly tough, but the final round was. Fiesta starts at O’Neals at 8 p.m. $5 quesadillas, burritos, and nachos, as well as $3.50 Mexican beers and margaritas. A GREAT opportunity for your team to get a win if you’re trying to earn some points in the JGTSpI.

On to City Tap House at 10:15, which is just pretty much a madhouse, just packed with youngsters. Let’s see how much they know about the decade most of them were born in (yeah, that’s how old I am. I’m hosting trivia for legally drinking kids who were born in the 90s.) Hope to see ya tonight!

Congratulations Nate. I Suppose.

You guys aren’t going to want to hear this any more than I want to tell it to you. The guy who won the JGT BRacket-tacular, Nate, is a member of Steak Em Up (aka the Jesters of Tortuga). I kid you not. So yeah, the guy who has more City Tap House gift certificates than anyone else on earth just earned another one. Very upsetting. Alright, so here was the final breakdown.

  1. Nate D
  2. Jon B
  3. Road Warrior
  4. CDub
  5. Rich B
  6. Chip Chantry, who I’d like to remind you knows nothing about basketball, finished 6th. I, a huge basketball fan, finished 82nd. There is no God.
  7. Aaron Hertzog. Would have won if any of the 3 teams in the Final 4 other than Louisville took it.
  8. Iceman
  9. Michael’s Rad Bracket
  10. Raymond Rad bracket. Back to back “Rad brackets”. Pretty Rad.

As for 50th place, which earned a $50 gift cert, it went to Alex. To get your gift cert, just shoot me a line (johnny @ johnnygoodtimes.com) and let me know when you want to meet up.

International Week Wraps Up Tonight

If you haven’t played this quiz yet this week you really should. Tonight’s is a really interesting one (and if you have any British friends, you absolutely, positively should bring them to quizzo tonight), with two handout rounds, just to mix things up a bit. We start at Industry. If you are looking for a win to earn yourself some points for the JGTSpI (which, incidentally will be held outdoors, weather permitting, on May 19th at the City Tap House. Working on a securing a band now) you’re best chance of the week will come tonight at Industry, where we’ve had four different winners over the first four weeks of the quiz. Things are wide open there right now. Action starts at 6:30. Great Happy hour specials go until 7, and the food is great, so get there a little early. It’s a great spot, if you haven’t checked it out yet, be sure to come by. Usually plenty of parking nearby as well.

On to the Bards at 9 p.m. Yeah, Steak Em Up recently changed their names to Jesters of Tortuga, but nonetheless if you beat them you instantly become a nerd legend, so give it a shot. I think one of the handout rounds could really throw them for a loop tonight. (Again, bring someone from the UK or Ireland and you will be in GREAT shape.) Hope to see ya tonight! (Video above well worth a watch, btw.)

International Week Starts Tonight

Alright, we’re kicking off International Week at quizzo this week. All questions will be coming from outside the United States. Expect some foreign language questions, a little geography, a little Downton Abbey, and maybe even a soccer question or two. Action starts tonight at North Star at 7 p.m. Half off mussels and hummus, $3 Kenzingers, and a great shot to get a win. On to the Sidecar at 9 p.m., where yes the NCAA championship will be on TV. Dollar off bitter beers. See ya tonight

(Above video was from Citizen’s Bank Park on Sunday.)

Bracket-tacular Breakdown

Ok, so we’re down to the Final Four, and we’ve got several different people who can win this thing. Let’s check out our leaders, and our possible scenarios (If you want to check scenarios for yourself go to the link above and click on scenario generator). Long story short…if anyone but Louisville wins the championship, Aaron Hertzog wins the title. No-one in our bracket had Syracuse, Michigan, or Wichita State winning it all. However, if Louisville beats Syracuse, then Jon Billet will win. And if Louisville beats Michigan, Nate from Steak Em Up will win. Needless to say, no-one wants to see the latter happen.

50th place is a little more wide open. Pretty much any way it shakes down is gonna result in a tie between two or more teams, so it will then come down to total points in the championship game.

As for last, I’m disappointed to say, I am doomed to 82nd out of 89, no matter what happens. You’d have thought it would have been tough to do worse than a guy who had THREE Final Four teams lose in the first round of the tourney. But no. Hyper CVAd somehow only picked one of the Final 8, and gets a hard earned last place finish.

Quizzo News and Notes

First of all, is this the future of quizzo? It seems kind of awesome. I really want to go to England and check it out. Hmmmm, we may have a “Send JGT to his Ancestral Homeland to Learn About Technological Quizzo Advances” fundraiser at some point soon. I really, really want to see this thing in action.

There is a new physical challenge on the facebook page if you are trying to earn points in the JGTSpI. More details on the big event coming soon.

Baseball quiz this Sunday! If you love baseball, don’t miss it!

Lord of the Rings quiz coming on April 21st at the Trestle Inn! More details coming next week.

If you missed it earlier, be sure to check out this interview I did with Kenn Kweder last weekend. Really a remarkable Philadelphian.

Just so we’re all on the same page here…the Nationals post earlier this week was an April Fool’s Day prank! I just want to make sure that’s clear. I hope Stephen Strasberg gets run over by a drunk Senator.

Looking for a win next week? Your best shots right now are probably North Star and Industry. And can someone please come to Black Sheep and knock off Duane’s World? This is getting ridiculous.

Congrats to Underground Bards for the best performance this past week. 39 out of 40 correct at City Tap House. Well Done!

Quizzo Tonight; and No, I’m Not Rooting for the Nationals

Quizzo tonight starts at O’Neals at 8 p.m. $5 tacos, nachoes, and quesadillas, as well as $3.50 Mexican beers. On to City Tap House where, like things have been a bit off the chain lately. Crazy packed. Action starts at 10:15 p.m. There is a math round this week, so things should be interesting. Don’t worry, it’s not too painful.

As far as yesterday’s post about the Nationals, it was an April Fool’s Day Joke. I wouldn’t root for the Nationals if they were playing the Soviets. I hope Bryce Harper falls into an active volcano. I caught some heat for it on twitter and facebook, but not as much as I wanted. Next time I pull a stunt like this, I expect more outrage. Of course, it worked out better than my April Fool’s joke a couple of years ago where I said I was going to quit quizzo to work for WIP…people stopped coming to my quizzes because they thought I had quit. That wasn’t my smartest move of all time.
