JGTAI Scoreboard at the Midway Point

autumninviteHere ya go, the scores at the midway point of the JGTAI. Teams in blue are in the Top 10, and thus eligible for the $100 bonus “Top 10” drawing. Teams in yellow would earn an invite if the season ended today. Teams in orange have scored but are not yet in the Top 25.

Several interesting things to note. First of all, a lot of team that just miss the cut are going to be cursing themselves later for not earning the bonus points I’ve put on the table. Since I am such a sweetheart, I am keeping the team avatar opportunity up there until Friday, since that is when I will be posting them for this week’s winners. 3 points for making a team avatar. We’ve had numerous teams get in the mix so far, with some fun results. Do not blow this opportunity to score 3 easy points!

There is a new physical challenge up now. As for making the cut, over 80 teams have scored so far. Any team, even one that hasn’t played yet, is still only one win and a physical challenge away from entering the Top 25, who will get invites. Do not give up hope, but also do not wait around any longer. Make sure you get your team out this week! Action starts tonight at the Westbury.

Johnny Goodtimes Autumn Invitational Scoreboard!

autumninviteHere ya go, the scoreboard. We’re only three weeks in, and already 64 teams are on the board. Only 25 of them will qualify for the Fall Classic, scheduled for November 14th (I am keeping open the possibility of the 21st if we lose a ton of quizzes to the Phillies). Venue details could be released as soon as tomorrow. If you have not played yet, there is still hope, as there are still 5 more weeks to go. But I wouldn’t wait too much longer, or it’s gonna be hard to get into the mix. As for best place to score points, well I’d say most spots are pretty wide open right now. We had new winners at both O’Neals and Ugly American, and the Black Sheep always has a lot of parity. Here is the schedule for this week.

MONDAY

  • The Westbury (with Mike Minion) 10:30 p.m.

TUESDAY

  • Terrace Taproom (with Mike Minion) 7:30 p.m.
  • O’Neals 8 p.m.
  • Bards 10:15 p.m.

WEDNESDAY

  • Locust Rendezvous 6:15 p.m.
  • Black Sheep 8 p.m.

THURSDAY

  • Ugly American 8 p.m.
  • Bards 10:15 p.m.

Autumn Invitational Standings after Week One

autumninvite

Here they are folks, the standings after one week of play. Remember, Top 25 qualify for the Fall Classic, Top 10 (in blue) have a shot at a $100 drawing. Needless to say, with 7 more weeks to go there is still plenty of time to get your squad on the scoreboard, but I wouldn’t wait too long. You can earn an easy point tonight, just by showing up at Cheaters Quizzo. All teams who play gain a bonus point. And if any of our Westbury teams are reading this, worry not…it will be over in plenty of time for you to make it a doubleheader. All points tonight double, so that the winners get 10 points, 2nd place gets 6, and 3rd Place gets 2. Action kicks off at the MarBar at 6:30 p.m. Bring your electronic devices!

Most of you guys really blew it in Week One, not taking all the easy points I placed on the table. Look Up Look Down took the easy 10 points, and it’s put them in 2nd Place, ahead of Steak Em Up, despite nothing but a 2nd Place finish. Furthermore, the $100 prize for most points scored via physical challenges is now theirs to lose. There is a new physical challenge up at facebook, and you’ve got until Thursday to get it done.  Also, keep in mind, I am giving away bonus points for funniest/most creative team names this week, so start getting your creative juices flowing. (All I ask is that if you played last week with a different name, just put an AKA after your new team name w/ the old one.) Gonna be a fun week. Hope to see ya out.

FAQs About the Autumn Invitational

autumninviteI’ve been sort of scattershot in presenting the info about the Autumn Invitational. Here is everything you need to know, and the answers to a few questions I have been getting so far.

WHAT IS IT? The Autumn Invitational is part quizzo, part scavenger hunt, part Let’s Make a Deal. Teams earn points for finishing in the top 3 in my weekly quizzos, for completing physical challenges posted on facebook, and for answering bonus trivia questions or having items on their persons at quizzo. After 8 weeks, the 25 teams that have scored the most points earn an invite to the Main Event. As of right now, the Main Event will be taking place on November 14th. (Though it could potentially be moved to the 21st) The location is currently a secret, but will be revealed in the next week.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Anyone is eligible to play. You and your team of up to 8 people can play any one of my quizzes during the week (schedule below), or one of Mike Minions two quizzes, to earn points. We have just started week 1, so you haven’t missed anything.

WHAT KIND OF PRIZES WE TALKING HERE? Ok, winning team of the Main Event gets $300 in prizes. 2nd Place gets $150 in prizes. The Top 10 teams after 8 weeks will be entered into a drawing for another $100 in prizes, and the team that scores the most points via physical challenges scores $100 in prizes. $650 worth of total prizes. Not too shabby.

HOW CAN MY TEAM SCORE POINTS? First place team at quizzo gets 5 points, 2nd place gets 3, and 3rd Place gets 1. In addition, there will be 4 numbers questions during each quiz, and whatever team comes closest gets a bonus point. You can earn up to 10 points a week via physical challenges. (This week, the points come easy in the physical challenges. They won’t be this easy in coming weeks, so take advantage!) There will also be “Name That Tune” opportunities to score points and Let’s Make a Deal opportunities at the quizzes (i.e. “Whoever can show me a wheat penny/pack of Chiclets/Estee lauder product”, etc. earns a point). There will also be a few special quizzes in which you can score DOUBLE POINTS. The first one of these will be on Monday at the Cheating for Charity Quiz.

HAS THERE EVER BEEN AN EVENT LIKE THIS ANYWHERE, ANYTIME BEFORE? No. Well except for the Summer Invitational that we did a few months ago. This is an event that is uniquely Philadelphian, and unlike anything else I have ever heard of.

BUT YOUR TOP TEAMS NEVER LOSE, JGT. Not true. Last week, the top 4 regular teams in my quiz all lost, and two didn’t even finish in the Top 3.

Here’s the schedule. If anyone has any further questions, feel free to post below in comments. And please click “Like” below to help spread the word.

The Autumn Invitational Kicks Off Next Week!

autumninvThe Fall Invitational kicks off next week, and this hybrid quizzo/scavenger hunt is going to be pretty damn awesome. In addition to new physical challenges, there will be opportunities to score points by answering questions on facebook and by answering some even harder than usual questions at quizzo. The action begins Monday night at the Westbury, as Mike two quizzes will count toward your totals. On Tuesday, I will be kicking off Week 1 at O’Neals next week with a bang. Double points at O’Neals Tuesday night. That means that winner gets 10 points, 2nd gets 6 points, and 3rd place gets 2 points. Also, I am going to be giving bonus to any team that defeats Steak Em Up over the course of the event*. And keep in mind, thanks to the Shaker Rule, you can have as many players on your team as you want. Two teams were able to use that to their advantage this past week to knock off the Steak. And the good news is that Steak Em Up can’t play with any more players, because they don’t have any friends. Use that to your advantage!

*”But wait, isn’t that unfair to Steak Em Up?” Yes. Yes it is. That’s why I’m doing it.

Quizzopatra on September 10th at Franklin Institute!

cleopatraAfter a couple of years hiatus, we are back on at the Franklin Institute! Yes, we will be quizzing you nerds on all things ancient Egypt, with a few wrinkles to keep everybody honest (I’d expect at least one Bangles question if I was you). It’s gonna  be a fun quiz in the planetarium, with a ceiling show to boot! Action starts at 7 p.m. on September 10th. Please RSVP by calling 215-448-1254. It’s free and in answer to your first question, “Yes, there will be a cash bar.” Hope you can make it. It’s gonna be fun.

The JGT Invitational Continues Tonight

jgtinvite Week 2 of the JGT Summer Invitational rolls on tonight at Locust Rendezvous at 6:15 p.m. and Black Sheep at 8 p.m. Both were quite competitive last week and I don’t expect anything different this week. At the Vous, pints of Hook and Ladder Flashpoint Pale Ale are only $3, and bottles of Miller High Life are $2. And lemonade flavored vodka shots are $2 as well. Unlike last week’s grape shots, chilled lemon vodka sounds pretty good right about now. Here’s our Top 10 heading into tonight’s action.

  2. Duane’s World 10
  3. Group W 8
  4. Magnus ver Magnusson 6

  6. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics 6
  7. Narcotyzing Dysfunktion 6

  9. Newman’s Own 5
  10. 7 tied at 3

Summer Invitational Scores Heading Into Tonight’s Action

jgtinvite320 more points were handed out last night, 20 more being handed out tonight. We’ve got an interesting leader board, including a surprise leader. At the Black Sheep, Cornbread Mafia and Unusual Suspects were both able to show me pictures of their cats before anyone else to earn points, while Newman’s Own scored the big 5 points with a narrow win. Here’s the Top 10 teams heading into tonight. All new quiz tonight, so anyone who played earlier this week is welcome to play again and try to earn more points! Full scoreboard coming tomorrow.

The First Annual JGT Summer Invitational!

jgtinvite25 teams will be invited to the First Annual JGT Summer Invitational, which will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, August 15th at the Urban Saloon, and which will award an $800 purse (and the prestigious “Milton Street Memorial Cup”). But you must earn your invite. Here’s how: In the next 7 weeks, we will keep track of all of our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Teams. Teams will get 5 points for a first place finish, 3 points for a 2nd place finish, and teams that finish 3rd will get one point. Furthermore, I may very well throw in a few more fun ways for teams to earn points, just to add a little intrigue. The Top 25 scoring teams after 7 weeks get an invite. In addition, the Top 10 scoring teams over the next several weeks will be entered in a drawing to win another $200 in cash*. $400 for 1st Place at the Invitational, $200 for 2nd place, and $200 for the drawing. (Yes, there will be an entry fee to the event, but only like $10, to help maybe get us a little entertainment.)

To play in the Invitational itself, each player on the team must have played with the team at least once (Unless you have a player coming in from out of state for the event) in the previous 7 weeks. For the next several weeks, please come up with a team name that you are happy with so I can keep track of your team more easily. This is going to be a lot of fun, and kicks off with quizzo at the Westbury tonight at 10:15 p.m. Get your best team together. Remember, you can have up to 8 people on a team. Call your nerd friends and tell them you really need their help for the next two months. And spread the word by clicking “Like” below!

*You must be present at the Invitational to win the drawing.

Gonzo Quizzo Tonight at POPE!

gonzo2Gonna have a lot of fun at the POPE tonight. If you like Hunter S. Thompson, beer, and/or dogs, this is going to be the quiz for you. Flying Dog Brewery is going to be host for tonight’s quizzo, and as you may be aware, Ralph Steadman does their artwork. The same Ralph Steadman who did the artwork for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Curse of Lono, and numerous other Thompson works. What a great chance for me to host a quiz in honor of one of my favorite writers of all time. But don’t worry, you can do well w/o reading Hell’s Angels. There will also be questions on dogs (In honor of Flying Dog) and Beer (in honor of, well, beer). Gonna be a fun quiz. Furthermore, there will be a Firkin of Flying Dog and the winners will walk with a $40 gift certificate to the POPE. Hope to see ya tonight! Action starts at 9 p.m., and the POPE is located at 1501 East Passyunk Avenue, between 10th and 11th on Dickinson.
