Quizzo Bowl Tickets are on sale tonight!

I will have tix to Quizzo Bowl 3 on sale all week. First come first serve in terms of picking your seats. You can also purchase them online, but they are $15 if you buy them from me and $18 if you buy them online. Still putting together my line-up, but you know if you saw the first two that it will be awesome and well worth the money (Ok, besides the freaking bellydancer at QB1. Can we just move past that?). I am also raising the stakes. In the past, the winners got $300. This year, the winner gets $500 and 2nd place gets $250. I will also have lots of free stuff to give away. This is the Quizzo event of the year. Do not miss it! Doors open at 6;30 p.m. and quizzo begins at 7:30 p.m.

Bands please be patient!

Once again, I have gotten a ton of feedback from bands interested in playing at Quizzo Bowl. But during the middle of the week, I have absolutely no time to listen to all of the bands. I will listen to all of them this weekend, as that is my only objective besides watching the Eagles game.

It’s gettin’, it’s gettin’, it’s gettin’ kinda hectic

As you might imagine, things are getting a little crazy as we head into QUizzo Bowl time, so if I’m not posting quite as much, you’ll know why. (OK, non sequiter: I just sneezed really hard and hurt my shoulder. Bad. I’m not kidding.) Anyways, I’m getting TONS of responses from bands wanting to play at QB3, so I’ll be scoping them out quite a bit over the next few days. If you contacted me, thank you. Fair warning: It will probably take at least a few days for me to get back to you. I’m also waiting to hear back from my halftime performer. Hopefully I’ll have some more info soon. I expect tix to go on sale next week. I’ll keep ya updated.

Johnny Needs a Band for QB3!

The good news is that we’re gonna get to party like rock stars at this year’s Quizzo Bowl, because it’s on a Saturday. The bad news is that the Crowd Pleasers cannot perform, since they perform at Bob and Barbara’s on Saturday nights. So Johnny needs a new backup band, and I figured that it would be fun to get the word out and see who was interested. I’m probably wanting to stay lounge-actish, if possible, but all entries will be considered. If you’re in a band, have friends who are, or know of a perfect group for this, it is a paying gig and it is on the main stage at the World Cafe Live on Saturday, February 3rd. Just contact me if you are interested.

February 3rd-Mark the Date: Quizzo Bowl III

It’s official, gang. Quizzo Bowl 3 will be held on Saturday, February 3rd, meaning that that weekend will include: Wing Bowl, Quizzo Bowl, the Super Bowl, and my birthday. It is going to be the most awesomest weekend ever. Tickets will go on sale in a couple of weeks, and I’ll have more details next week.

What do you think?

The lovely Ginger and I hit the road today, looking for a place to hold Quizzo Bowl 3. We started at the Mummers Museum. If I held it there, we would do it on Sunday, January 28th or Saturday, Feb. 3rd. Tickets would be $20, but that would include all you can drink (beer, well drinks, and wine). We’d have snacks, but no real dinner food. We also checked out the Golden Palace, that crazy looking Chinese place in South Philly. Big and tacky, with a great stage. It’s BYO, but I would probably try to get a beer sponsor, and make it $15 all you can drink beer. Of course, you could also order off the menu. Again, Sunday the 28th. And then there is the World Cafe. The only date they can give me is friday, January 26th. Don’t know why, but something about a friday jsut seems weird. Tix would probably be $12-$15, but you’d have to pay for your own booze and food. Of course, it is the nicest facility with the best acoustics. Not sure if I could get the Crowd Pleasers, though, b/c they usually play at Bob and Barbara’s on fridays and don’t know if they could get out of it. Anyways, please give me your thoughts below. Would a friday work, do you think? Also, we will shortly have our first post from Ginger on our first ever “Ginger Thursday.”

Hmmmmm

I liked the Mummer Museum suggestion. I just spoke with them on the phone. I think I’m gonna go check out the space now and see if I think it’s big enough for our purposes. I’ll keep you updated.

A Crowd Pleasing Quizzo Bowl 2

The only thing as hot as Nate Wiley and the Crowd Pleasers at the World Cafe live on Sunday night was Where’s You Ten Points Now( aka Where’s Johnny, below), who got the first 47 questions correct in Quizzo Bowl 2 on their way to a second consecutive Quizzo Bowl victory. The team, who had been featured in a recent City Paper article, came in talking smack, and then completely backed it up, missing only the final question of regulation. Had they answered the 48th question correctly, they would have become only the second team in Johnny Goodtimes quizzo history to record a perfect score in a quizzo game. The only team to do so, The Sofa Kingdom, had come into last night’s match up with high hopes, and were visibly shaken by their fourth place finish. The Kingdom won Beat the Champs in August fair and square, not even needing the ten point buffer.

The Cracked Eggheads (below) were one of only four teams to answer the final question correctly and the ten pointer thrusted them into second place. Who’s Your Daddy (aka The Jams) could have actually pulled off the comeback victory had they gotten that question correct. They finished in third.

But the evening was about more than just questions and answers. The night began with the Philadelphia Bluegrass Band, who sounded terrific. It continued with Johnny coming out of retirement (for one night only!) to rap, audaciously sampling a Biggie Smalls beat to lay down, “I Love It When You Call Me Quiz Poppa.” Then, following Round One, came what was for many the highlight of the evening. I’m not exactly a music afficianardo, but I’ve heard my fair share of live tunes, and I have yet to find conclusive proof that there is a better band in Philadelphia than Nate Wiley and the Crowd Pleasers. Their smooth soul sounds rocked the World Cafe Live throughout the evening. At halftime, Norm Klar appeared on stage, and did his unique and hilarious “Magic Show” which was distinctive for it’s lack of successful magic tricks. The lovely Ginger assisted in prize giveaways and judging throughout the evening. Finally, I wanna give a shout out to local comedian Chip Chantry and my mom, who were the other two judges. All in all, I had a blast last night. I hope you guys did as well.
