Coming Soon

Alright, I have lots of catching up to do today. I have tons of pics to post, new power rankings, and details on the Fall Brawl. Oh, and I have to tell you about my stunning bowling performance yesterday.

But it’s nice out and so I’m gonna take the dog for a long walk in the park. I will get cracking this afternoon. Promise. In the meantime, I think it’s time to get the ball back up and rolling on the Donovan’s fault tip, due to one of the worst losses in Philadelphia sports history against a glorified high school team. Be sure to send in your submissions. Also, be sure to follow Donovansfault on twitter.

Lots of Quizzo News

  • jgtlogoFirst of all, remember Fall Brawl is going down this Saturday at the East Falls Marketplace at 5 p.m. Live music, beer, and $250 in prizes. I know that some of our top teams are lined up to play. Should be a fun time.
  • Pics of Thursdays winners forthcoming. I took the photos on my dad’s camera, he went back to VA, and now he can’t figure out how to send them via email. I am currently in talks with my sister, who I am hoping can take over the project and get those pics sent to Philadelphia. I will let you know how things develop in this very delicate process.
  • Quizzo taking foothold in Kansas City.
  • 168 Hour Film and Sketch Spookyfest next Monday at Khyber. If you want to put together a “Haunting” skit  or video for our show, please let me know, and you will receive the email tonight with the prop, One Liner, and rules. You will have a mere 168 hours to complete your project, so use your time wisely.
  • Is Denver’s Evil Empire expanding toward Philadelphia? Geeks Who Drink CEO John Dicker and I have long been friends, and I have marveled at his ability to expand his empire. But now he is hitting close to home. He has started quizzo in Charlottesville, VA, within one days marching distance of Philadelphia. Be forewarned, Dicker, my sentries have scattered to the city walls.  My archers are practicing their aim. My phalanx are…doing whatever it is phalanxes do. You’ve been warned!

How Cubans Celebrate Columbus

columbusevilOne of the wonderfully ironic things about this ignorant and idiotic holiday about a failed explorer whose two major accomplishments were a) getting lost and b) killing and enslaving millions of people is that he didn’t discover America at all. In fact, he never stepped foot in it. But he did step foot in Cuba, which makes this newspaper article about the bar that marks the spot of his landing in Cuba fascinating:

When visitors pull up, the employees greet them with a full-costume re-enactment of Columbus’ arrival...His landing is commemorated by a lone plaque, almost lost amid sculptures of Taino gods, a replica of a Taino village — which includes the bar — and the ruins of a marker, toppled last year by Hurricane Ike, for a small Taino archeological site…The shore, now a badly eroded beach, where Columbus and his crew landed their boat is unmarked and obscured by vegetation.

Baseball Today; Quizzo Tonight

Hey kids, I’m off to the Phils game. It starts at 2:37, so it should wrap up around 6ish. I’ll be heading to the Vous as soon as it’s done, so hopefully we’ll start on time, but if it goes extra innings, I could be a little late. Action at Vous should start around 6:15ish. We then move on to the Black Sheep at 8 p.m. Been a little quieter there the past couple of weeks, so now’s the time to go to get a table. It’ll be packed by this winter. In anticipation of tonight’s game, here are a few things to check out.

A Few Random Thoughts I Had About Baseball this Morning.

A Colorado Rockies quiz.

An interview with a Colorado Rockies blogger.

Here’s some bars that are running specials for the games.

What’s the Best Compliment You’ve Ever Received?

kennedyI recently read an excellent article in Esquire about the art of the compliment. It got me thinking about the best ones I received. When I was 17, I was at a wake when someone told me I looked like a young Robert Kennedy (above). I always liked that one. Another one of my favorites came a couple of years ago, when after the graduation of our summer school class, I was driving a couple of the kids home. One of them turned to me, and said, “‘Rome, you one cool white dude.” Obviously that one ranks high as well.

We’re in Philadelphia, and we’re much better known for the insult than the compliment, so I think it’ll be fun to see if people around here give compliments. Plase post the best compliment you’ve ever received below.

Happy Birthday Frankie Lymon!

The singer of “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” was the first black teenage pop idol. As with so many child stars, his life was full of tragedy. He was married three times, developed a heroin habit by the age of 15, and was dead at age 25. He would be turning 67 today.

But here’s something amazing I found out today as I was researching: one of the Teenagers, Jimmy Merchant, is currently living on Virginia’s Eastern Shore! Wow, I need to get an interview with this guy next time I go home. This is incredible.

Thought you kids might get a kick out of this. Whether you like sports or not, you should enjoy the ugliest jerseys of all time, inspired by the Seahawks.

Trivia Art made a pretty Stephen Starr Timeline graph over at Foobooz I thought you might dig.
