I’m back for one more quiz before I really take a break from you people. So if you want to see your dashing young hero in action, tonight’s the night. That said, in true Goodtimes fashion: I will be late. I have a corporate gig at 6:30 so to be safe we’ll be pushing the quiz back to 8:30. Everything else lines up per usual. Make it happen!
You guys will be getting to know Steve aka “Know Contest” a bit better these next few weeks, as he picks up some summer shifts and starts to do some of his own quizzes.
What one album would you want with you on a desert island? The other day, I had a wicked craving to listen to Achtung, Baby three times in a row without interruption, but I like to avoid getting punched, so I’ll say the Police’s Zenyatta Mondatta–unless I discovered the island wasn’t deserted, in which case I’d quickly switch over to Purple Rain.
What is your favorite sea creature? The coelecanth, the horrible-tasting, slow-moving fishosaurus we thought was extinct for 66 million years until one was found just chilling off S. Africa in 1938.
Shaping up to be a beautiful night for quizzing outdoors on Thursday, as I’ll be hosting a rare Thursday night quiz at the Julian Abele Park at 22nd and Montrose. Here’s the details:
Teams of (up to) 6 people, $30 per team, with fabulous prizes for the winners. Cash preferred, Venmo also an option.
Bring a blanket and/or chairs for your team, and pack a picnic or do takeout from one of our delicious neighboring restaurants, and certainly bring your own beverages.
Quizzo will be largely geared towards the adults, but there will be some questions that the kids can help with as well. Look forward to seeing you on Thursday night! You can RSVP on Facebook here.
We’re back to our regularly schedule programming this week, more or less, before ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE for the summer. (I’m gonna be spending a lot of time in Virginia over the next month or so, but don’t worry, you’ll be well taken care of.) This week, Carl is out of the country, discovering the wonders of Italian architecture.
I’m going to be hosting a special quiz on Thursday at Julian Abele Park at 6:30. I’ll have more details on that coming soon, but short story is: $30 a team, up to 6 players per team, and we’re gonna hang out in the park and play quizzo (different quiz than the regular, so you can play twice this week if you want).
Last week we learned that weizen means wheat, Procol Harum sang Whiter Shade of Pale, and the first ever drive in movie theatre was located in Camden. What will we learn this week? Here’s your schedule:
MONDAY
Loco Pez 7 PM
TUESDAY
Founding Fathers 8 PM
WEDNESDAY
Dock Street 8 PM
THURSDAY
Julian Abele Park (with JGT, more details forthcoming) 6:30 PM
Alright, a whole lot going down this week. It’s beer week, so we’ll have a beer round or two snuck in there. Our friends from Thin Man Brewing will be on hand at Founding Fathers on Tuesday night. I’ll be doing a beer week event Monday night at Love City outdoors at 7 that’s open to the public. I’ve got a private gig Wednesday and Carl and Taryn are outta town this week but we somehow are making it work. Here’s the deets.
Last week we learned that Frida Kahlo had an affair with Leon Trotsky, that DJ Lethal is in Limp Bizkit, and that rattlesnakes are found in 46 US States. What will we learn this week? Attend the quiz to find out! We are a GO for Memorial Day, so we’ll start there tonight. Here’s the lineup:
Supporters for Sen. John McCain gather at Chuck E. Cheese’s on Powell Ave in east Portland Thursday night to hear the candidate accept the nomination of the Republican Party for the office of president of the United States. Lila Leathers-Fitz and Michael A. Fitz. LC- The Oregonian
A fun time last week. We learned that Lynard Skynard is from Jacksonville (where they got their name from their ornery high school gym coach), Luck Be a Lady plays at the Bellagio fountains, and that Ziwe hosts a talk show in an all-pink studio. For this week, please note: quiz is canceled Tuesday night at Founding Fathers due to the Sixers. Otherwise we’re a go as of now. Here’s our schedule:
I’m a day late and a dollar short, but all good, we had a nice crowd at Loco Pez last night anyway. We learned a lot at last week’s quiz, including about how the painting Olympia by Manet (above) caused a scandal in 1865. You can learn more about the controversy here. Another controversy we explored was the Police song Don’t Stand So Close to Me and the 1955 novel it was inspired by: Lolita. You can read more about the background to the song here.
Here’s the rest of the lineup for this week. Carl’s being lazy so I have to fill in for him on Thursday.
As you folks know, there’s nothing I love more than a side hustle, and whoa boy do I have one now! I’ve been working my ass off for the past year for no money and a whole lotta heartburn, but NOW is when it (hopefully) pays off*. The 2022 season starts this weekend, and we’ve got a whole lot of fun in store. Let’s be honest, this will be the only time in pro sports history a doofus like me will ever be allowed this close to the gears of power, so I’m going to take it for all it’s worth. But we gotta succeed this season for me to wield by PT Barnum-inspired powers in the future. And this season starts on Saturday.
And I thought we should open the season at a grocery store. Well technically, we open in Boston, our watch party will be at a grocery store. And not just ANY grocery store, the kickass Giant on 23rd and Arch. Have you been there yet? It’s insane. 40 beers on tap that you pour yourself, a Mission Taqueria, sushi, wine, and a spectacular terrace where we’ll be watching the game! The weather looks great and we’re gonna have a blast. We’ll have a projector screen set up, and I’ll be hosting a special trivia faceoff at halftime. If you’re gonna try to make it out, be sure to go to our event page on Facebook and RSVP. See ya Saturday!
