We’re back in business, as Week 3 of the JGT Autumn Invitational kicks off tonight. We get it started at O’Neals at 8 p.m. Truth be told, O’Neals and Black Sheep may be the best bars to score some points. Lots of parity at both places. Also, $3.50 Mexican Beers at O’Neals. We move to Bards at 10:15 p.m. where Lagers are $2.50 and they’ve started putting some new and interesting beers on tap lately (Try the Sly Fox Oktoberfest.) Also, you’re not going to get an easier opportunity to score a few points than this week’s facebook challenge. And keep in mind that Mike Minion will be hosting quizzo at the Terrace Taproom tonight at 7:30 p.m. Beat the rainy day blues with a little quizzo tonight!
Well, it’s that time of year again. My favorite time of the year as a sports fan and my least favorite time of the year as a businessman, since I usually have to cancel a fair amount of quizzes. The good news is that we won’t have to miss any quizzes this week, but we do have to make a couple of minor changes. Locust Rendezvous quiz has been moved to Thursday at 6:15 p.m. That’s right, I’m pullin’ the old tripleheader Thursday. Also, Black Sheep Wednesday is still on, but will be pushed back an hour, so we’ll begin at 9 p.m. on Wednesday. So you can celebrate Doc’s complete game 4 hitter (I’m calling it) by keeping the party going at quizzo. So here is the week’s schedule:
Here’s the scores after two weeks in the JGTAI (Blue teams are in the Top 10, Yellow in the Top 25, and orange teams have scored but not qualified for Top 25). After two weeks, we’ve already had more teams score than we had total in the JGT Summer Invitational. The addition of the Numbers Runners is really making things interesting. It also means that if you haven’t started already, you need to get your team together stat. There is still plenty of time, as a 2nd place finish will put you in the Top 25, but don’t let yourself get too far behind. I would definitely suggest you play this coming week.
The team above, the Expendables, are getting special mention this week because of their remarkable performance on Thursday night. They got 3 of the first 4 questions right, then missed 34 of the next 36. That included a 1 for 10 performance in the 50/50 round. The topic was Tennessee and Kentucky, and they are both from Europe. Therefore each question in that round was essentially a toss up. That means that the odds of missing 9 straight (as they did) stand at a remarkable 0.19%, or 500 to 1. (The odds of any random person you meeting having the same birthday as you is 0.3%*)
Also, congrats to CatDog, who won last Monday’s Cheater’s Quiz. It earned them double points in the JGTAI, and more importantly, we were able to raise $435 for the Spells Writing Lab. Extra special thanks to everyone who came out. Hope to see ya this week!
Here’s the latest from Mike Minion on tongiht’s quiz. I will have Thursday photos up as soon as my computer stops acting up. And I’ll have the JGTAI scores up this afternoon, so be sure to check back.
Week 3 of the Fall Invitational kicks off this evening at The Westbury. Tonight, the theme round will be carpentry and carpenters. That’s right, time for you eggheads to learn something practical. Or maybe I’ll just write lots of questions about Karen and Richard. Either way, it will be a difernt type of round and one that should frustrate the regular winners. Once again, I’ll be offering 2 bonus points in the Invitational to any team that can place ahaed of our two perrennial powerhouses, Duane’s World and Group W. Last week, The 4 C’s took home the points; can they do it again? Can you? Come find out if you’re on the level tonight at 10:30 PM. There will be lots of beer and shot specials, plus plenty of big screens TV’s to watch the game. Hope to see you there!
The word magical comes to mind. I got off the subway on Sunday after the Phils loss, and was greeted by this. Needless to say, it cheered me up considerably. There are a number of things to note in this video. First of all, the guy dancing subtly in the background is what really makes this number pop. Secondly, I am quite confident this was not a prepared routine. I think the singer thought he would go out, sing a few Motown numbers, and make a few bucks. I don’t think he envisioned this…brilliant madness that followed. Furthermore, if anyone choreographed this, they would be considered a genius. And don’t think they just did a quick number and moved on. Oh no, they were dancing like this when I arrived, and still dancing like this when I left after about 20 minutes, with no indication of slowing down. Third, beyond all the insanity of the whole thing, I want to acknowledge something else: isn’t music just awesome? I mean, there is no question that these three men probably don’t have a lot in common, but damn if the Four Tops don’t make them all want to move. Fourth, I think if your friends ever ask you what Philadelphia is like, this video should answer all of their questions. Crazy, black, white, beautiful, soulful, hilarious, sad, sublime, and insane. And finally, a quick note to my mom: sorry you missed this. I know you would have loved to have been the 4th dancer.
Ok, so I posted the pics a day early because I am headed to Asheville at 5:30 a.m. tomorrow to do a wedding. No kidding. Anywho, we’ve got all new questions tonight and if they haven’t already, your team has a chance to break into the scoreboard. Also, there is a new facebook physical challenge. I’ll tell you here because I want everyone in on this one…2 points for anyone who gets their photo taken with a SEPTA employee. (If you don’t have facebook, you can email it to me at johnny@johnnygoodtimes.com and I’ll post it for you. Luddite.)
Anyways, tonight’s quiz. We kick it off at Ugly American at 8 p.m., where all beers are a buck off. We then move to Bards at 10:15 p.m., where Lagers are $2.50. And of course it is French Fry Thursday. We are also wrapping up cheaters week, so we will ahve a very interesting Cheaters Round tonight. Gonna be a fun quiz. Hope to see ya tonight!
