Quizzo Bowl 2015: The Year We Turned It Up to XI

Screen shot 2015-03-04 at 1.03.11 PM

I had narrowed it down to a couple of bands for Quizzo Bowl XI, but wasn’t sure that either was the perfect fit. After taking a bath on the boat, I needed QBXI to be a success or it was going to be the end of the road for the Bowl as we know it. So I needed a sure shot for the band. When I saw that the musical Motown was coming to Philly, it clicked. I asked around about Motown bands, and was quickly pointed in the direction of the York Street Hustle.

The weather was snowy and nasty, and getting to to the World Cafe proved to be a major challenge. The snow and ice combo had me worried that whole teams were going to drop out, but only a few people couldn’t make it.

There were some shenanigans, such as the opener “Quizzo Bowl Man”, which was going great until I totally flubbed the lines in the second verse, which is something I’ll never forgive myself for. A more successful performance was put on by my mom, who sang backup on a Supremes number.  The quiz itself was rather enjoyable, from the back and forth between Fastball Bob and Bing Supernova that formed Round Two to the debut of Johnny Flamethrower in Round Three. In terms of trivia, it was Round Four that took the cake, as the music round, a collection of Detroit musicians that ran the gamut from Del Shannon to Kid Rock, was a huge success. But it was the between round performances that truly made the night. The York Street Hustle simply channelled the spirit and energy of Motown, and by the end, the crowd was less interested in the scores than they were in the band.

With good reason. The Sofa Kingdom won their 5th Quizzo Bowl, but even their repeat title couldn’t put a damper on the night. The team of Jeopardy champs finished 2nd, but the heroes of the night were But My Mom Says I’m Cool, who took a narrow lead into the final round and finished an impressive third. (You can check all of the scores here.)

All in all, Quizzo Bowl XI was a resounding success, with numerous people saying it was the greatest one of all time. It certainly ranked right up there with some of the classics, such as QBIV (at the Blue Horizon), QBVIII (steel drums and Koob and Kristy’s on-stage engagement), and QBIX (Welcome to My Face). Regardless, it’s going to be a damn tough act to follow for whomever gets the music gig next year. Be sure to check out Emelie Rejician’s incredible photos from Quizzo Bowl XI.

Snow Day Sale at Shibe

Flyers_Slope_Knit_1024x1024

We’re running several sales over at Shibe today for the snow day. So far we’re selling this women’s sweatshirt for an insanely low $25 and this Flyers winter cap for just $18. We’ll be throwing more sales up on our facebook page throughout the day, so be sure to tune in.

Also, as a JGT exclusive, to launch our new beer shirts, gonna sell you these Esslinger’s shirts for just $20. Just use the promotional code Quiz when you check out. Incredibly comfortable Next Level shirts. Esslinger’s Little Man was an advertising icon in Philly in the 1940s and 50s, and Esslinger’s was the first brewery in Philly to sell beer in cans.

Photo_Feb_21_11_59_31_AM_largeAs for things at the store, they’re going well. Be sure to swing by sometime to check out some of the really cool gear we’ve got. We’re at 137 South 13th Street, just south of Vintage Wine Bar (and Danny’s!). Closed today for snow, but I’ll be around tomorrow afternoon until about 3, so come on by.

Quizzo Moves to Founding Fathers Next Wednesday

2-side-view-by-Nell-Hoving-0108

It’s the end of an era at the Black Sheep, as the quizzo there this Wednesday (March 4th) will be my last one there. We’ll be moving South, to Founding Fathers (1612 South Street), where quizzo will take place at 8:30 on Wednesdays, starting on March 11th. Sad to say goodbye to our friends at the Black Sheep, but excited to start at a new venue. I think we’re gonna have a lot of fun at Founding Fathers, which is a large room and will give us some room to grow. We’ll have some beer and food specials for quizzo night, which I’ll let you know about over the next week. And yes, tomorrow night at Black Sheep, I’ll probably have a drink or two to celebrate the last quiz and say goodbye to some old friends. Hope to see ya there. If so, get there early. As usual over the past ten years, I expect it to be packed.

Get Your Quizzo Bowl Tickets Now! (It’s Gonna Sell Out Soon)

Quizzo-Bowl-XI-flyer

Hey gang, we’re about halfway to a sellout, and I know a lot of teams haven’t bought their tickets yet. So, if you’re planning on going, get your tix ASAP! It looks like it will be sold out in a few days. I will have tickets on me tonight at quizzo, so you’ll have a chance to get some then. Otherwise, you can purchase them here online (there is a $5 service fee online). After that, it’s every man for himself. No guarantees I’ll have any left by next week. Just want to be sure you guys know to get them now, before it’s too late.

And if you have a team of 5 or less, please let me know, because we are gonna consolidate smaller teams to make room for as many folks as possible. I’ve also created a post on the Quizzo Bowl facebook page so that smaller teams can try to team up beforehand.

All Football Quizzo on Sunday!

sports-triva-fb

Think there’s no football this Sunday besides the lame Pro Bowl? Think again! There’s gonna be an All-Pro football quizzo at Founding Fathers Sports Bar & Grill at 5:30 on Sunday, hosted by Shibe co-owner Johnny Goodtimes. In addition to testing your pigskin knowledge, there will also be various $4.50 craft beers and $5 Nachos and Quesadillas. Most questions will be from the Super Bowl era. Gonna be a lot of fun, and you might learn a thing or two. (As far as questions asked: almost all NFL, lots of Super Bowl questions, with perhaps a few USFL and “Where did so and so play in college?” type questions. But far and away mostly NFL). See ya Sunday!

Quizzo Bowl Tickets Now On Sale! Motown Throwdown Takes Place on February 21st!

WHO: You, me, and nerds from as far away as Seattle and Denver.

WHAT: Quizzo Bowl XI, the most prestigious quizzo event in the country.

WHEN: February 21st, 2015. 8 p.m.

WHERE: World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut Street). The Downstairs.

HOW BIG CAN MY TEAM BE? Teams can be up to 8 players each.

WHAT KIND OF ENTERTAINMENT WILL THERE BE BETWEEN ROUNDS? An incredible Motown group, the York Street Hustle (above) will play between rounds. I’m also going to be assisted by one of Philly most beloved comedians, Chip Chantry, and of course my lovely assistant, Fastball Pitcher Bob Gutierrez.

HOW MUCH IS IT? $25 per player.

FASTBALL BOB IS WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION BY HIMSELF. I am aware of that.

WHAT IF WE HAVE A TEAM OF 4 OR LESS? Let me know…I’ll team you up with another small team.
ysh_group

WHERE CAN I GET TICKETS? I’ll have tickets for sale on me at quizzo, or you can purchase them online at World Cafe Live.

IS THERE LIKE PRIZES AND STUFF? Yes, winning team walks with $800 worth of prizes. In addition, I am offering a $100 bounty prize as well to any new winners. So if you’re any team other than Sofa Kingdom, Lambda, the Jeopardy Champs, or Where’s Johnny, there’s a bonus prize.

ARE THE QUESTIONS ALL ABOUT MOTOWN? No, the theme is just Motown because the band is a Motown band. I’d expect a few questions about Detroit, but the quiz itself is all general knowledge, like a regular quiz, except with a few twists.

WHAT ABOUT GIVEAWAYS? Oh yeah, plenty of giveaways throughout the night.

REMEMBER WHEN YOU DID ONE OF THESE ON BOARD A BOAT? Yes.

THAT WAS PRETTY STUPID, HUH? Yeah, pretty stupid.

WE HATE BOATS. I am aware of that now.

WHAT ELSE? Rumors that Johnny and Chip are going to be bringing back an old vaudeville favorite of theirs from back in the day: the Wheel of Terrific is apparently making a comeback. Also, best dressed team wins a sweet prize. Be sure to follow the Quizzo Bowl page on Facebook for updates.

SO FOR $25, I GET A MOTOWN BAND, A CHANCE TO WIN $900, ONE OF PHILLY’S BEST COMEDIANS AND FASTBALL PITCHER BOB GUTIERREZ? That is correct.

AND I DON’T HAVE TO GET ON A BOAT? There will be no boat.

SOUNDS LIKE A STEAL OF A DEAL! It is! And get your tickets soon, because once they sell out, they sell out. And when I don’t do them on boats, they tend to sell out quickly. I’ll have them on me starting tonight at quizzo. Get ready. The Motown Throwdown is gonna be awesome!

Quizzo for the Cause: Holiday Wish List for CGRC

cgrc

Hey guys, have a great charity for us to raise money for for the next two days at quizzo…the Child Guidance Resource Center has a program in which it buys toys for children who otherwise might not receive any for Christmas. A friend of mine who works with local charities says that they do an awesome job. So 100% of the money you donate over the next two days at quizzo will be donated on Wednesday morning so they can go buy toys for kids in need. If you cannot attend quizzo but still want to donate, that’s no problem. Just go here, scroll down a bit, and pay by credit card. For those of you who will be at quizzo, whatever you want to donate tonight and tomorrow, whether it’s a buck or a hundred, will be greatly appreciated. And thanks again for your generosity at the Invitational…here’s the letter I got back from Philabundance once I donated that $100. Happy holidays everyone!
