Excited to be hosting a fundraiser quizzo for the person I think is unquestionably the best candidate for Mayor on Saturday! I am a big fan of Rhynhart’s, as she has time and time again proven willing and able to speak truth to power, even when it’s earned her political enemies. Once I decided I was voting for her, I reached out to her campaign to see if they’d be interested in having me host a quizzo as a fundraiser, and they said yes. So this Saturday, we’ll be hanging out at Yards Brewery. The money from all tickets sold will go directly to Rebecca’s campaign, and it will be an all new quiz. Action starts at 12:30PM on Saturday. Last week we had the question, “What Italian explorer is honored with a bridge connecting Staten Island and Brooklyn?” The correct answer is Giovanni da Verrazzano. Which leads to one of those great wiki paragraphs about 16th century explorers, all of whom seem to end under horrific circumstances:

There are conflicting accounts of Verrazzano’s demise. In one version, during his third voyage to North America in 1528, after he had explored Florida, the Bahamas, and the Lesser Antilles, Verrazzano anchored out to sea and rowed ashore, probably on the island of Guadeloupe. He was allegedly killed and eaten by the native Caribs. The fleet of two or three ships was anchored out of gunshot range, and no one could respond in time. However, older historical accounts suggest that Verrazzano was the same person as the corsair Jean Fleury, who was executed for piracy by the Spanish at Puerto del Pico, Spain.

Last week we had the question, “What small landlocked country in Southern Asia with a capital of Thimphu is known as the Land of the Thunder Dragon?” The answer was Bhutan. The Land of the Thunder Dragon is such a badass name, as is their flag (above). They got the name because they have such intense thunderstorms, and in ancient times the lightning was thought to be fire from a dragon. Anyways, we’re back in action this week. Here’s our lineup:
