Tap House and JGT Present the 11th Annual JGT Bracket-tacular

doubledribble

It’s that time of year again, folks. Time for March Madness. Time for the JGT Bracket-tacular. And we’ve got some doozies for prizes this year, thanks to our friends at the Tap House. As you may know, they have several bars and restaurants in the area, including the new Logan Tap House, the Field House, and Pennsylvania 6. All of those come into play this year, as the winner of this year’s bracket-tacular gets a viewing party for 4 at the Field House with beers and apps included. They also get a free dinner at Pennsylvania 6. Our biggest first place prize ever. 2nd place is going to get a $100 gift cert at the Logan Tap House. 3rd place will get $50 worth of gift certs at the City Tap House. And yes, there will be a very special prize for our 50th place finisher again this year.

To sign up, just go here and enter your picks (if you don’t already have a Yahoo account, it literally takes about 20-30 seconds to set one up). Gonna be a fun year, and a crazy tournament as always. Since we’re nerds, we’re going to be using the Fibonacci sequence for scoring, and you do get a bonus point when correctly picking upsets.

Quizzo Tonight

A big win for Duane’s World last night at the first ever quiz at a packed to the rafters Founding Fathers. Tonight, the Invitational moves to the Industry, where we have to wonder: whatever happened to Imaginary Pablo? They’ve had their thunder stolen by ISIS, ISIS, Baby the past few weeks at Industry. Will they regroup for the invitational? Are there other teams aiming to make their move? Action starts at 6:30.

On to Bards at 9:15, where we stay pretty packed but still don’t have a dominant team. It’s anybody’s ballgame and a great quiz, especially now that we’ve got the audio on throughout the bar. Music round is “cover songs”. Hope to see ya tonight!

Tripleheader Tonight

Action starts at the Comcast Center at 5:30 p.m. On to O’Neals at 8 p.m., where any team who can score 110 wins an extra $50. $3.50 margaritas and Mexican beers. On to Tap House at 10:15. It’s spring break this week, so I expect it to be a bit quiet. Could be a good opportunity to sneak in and earn a prize at the only spot that offers three prizes.  And yes, earn some points in the JGT Spring-vitational.

Also, my friend Carl B. Sure has started hosting a quiz at Gunner’s Run at the Piazza. So if any of you are in NoLibs and are looking for a good quiz, be sure to check that one out. Action starts at 8 sharp.

Spring-vitational Starts Tonight!

jgtspring

It’s that time again! Time for the 5th annual JGT Springvitational, where teams will earn points throughout the next couple of months, with the top vote-gathering teams earning an invite to the Big Event in May.

Same as before, a first place finish earns you 5 points, 2nd place 3 points, and 3rd place 1 point. There will be a few wrinkles thrown in, as well as a few double points nights as well. Best places to get a win right now? Well, there are no heavy favorites at Sidecar, O’Neals, or Bards.

So get your team together and start earning some points. Action starts tonight at North Star at 7 and Sidecar at 9:30. See ya then!

Quizzsnow is On for Tonight

You can’t spell quizzo without “snow”, so needless to say, we’ll be in action tonight. We start at Industry at 6:30 p.m., where Vanilla Ice’s Rap Sheet has usurped Imaginary Pablo as the team to beat. On to the Bards at 9:15 p.m. Interesting quiz this week. Quizzo Bowl 2015: The Year We Turned It Up to XI

Screen shot 2015-03-04 at 1.03.11 PM

I had narrowed it down to a couple of bands for Quizzo Bowl XI, but wasn’t sure that either was the perfect fit. After taking a bath on the boat, I needed QBXI to be a success or it was going to be the end of the road for the Bowl as we know it. So I needed a sure shot for the band. When I saw that the musical Motown was coming to Philly, it clicked. I asked around about Motown bands, and was quickly pointed in the direction of the York Street Hustle.

The weather was snowy and nasty, and getting to to the World Cafe proved to be a major challenge. The snow and ice combo had me worried that whole teams were going to drop out, but only a few people couldn’t make it.

There were some shenanigans, such as the opener “Quizzo Bowl Man”, which was going great until I totally flubbed the lines in the second verse, which is something I’ll never forgive myself for. A more successful performance was put on by my mom, who sang backup on a Supremes number.  The quiz itself was rather enjoyable, from the back and forth between Fastball Bob and Bing Supernova that formed Round Two to the debut of Johnny Flamethrower in Round Three. In terms of trivia, it was Round Four that took the cake, as the music round, a collection of Detroit musicians that ran the gamut from Del Shannon to Kid Rock, was a huge success. But it was the between round performances that truly made the night. The York Street Hustle simply channelled the spirit and energy of Motown, and by the end, the crowd was less interested in the scores than they were in the band.

With good reason. The Sofa Kingdom won their 5th Quizzo Bowl, but even their repeat title couldn’t put a damper on the night. The team of Jeopardy champs finished 2nd, but the heroes of the night were But My Mom Says I’m Cool, who took a narrow lead into the final round and finished an impressive third. (You can check all of the scores here.)

All in all, Quizzo Bowl XI was a resounding success, with numerous people saying it was the greatest one of all time. It certainly ranked right up there with some of the classics, such as QBIV (at the Blue Horizon), QBVIII (steel drums and Koob and Kristy’s on-stage engagement), and QBIX (Welcome to My Face). Regardless, it’s going to be a damn tough act to follow for whomever gets the music gig next year. Be sure to check out Emelie Rejician’s incredible photos from Quizzo Bowl XI.
