3 Last Chances to Earn an Invite Tonight! (And ’80s Trivia w/ a Twist)

Well this is it. It’s all or nothing tonight. I’m going to open things up a bit, however. I am going to allow any team that finishes in the Top 3 tonight earn an invite to the City vs. City Smackdown on Sunday. And now that the smacktalk is starting on facebook, you might want to get in on this action. We are going to have a lot of fun with this.

There will be two 80s quizzes tonight. Koob and Kristy host one at Drinker’s West at 8 p.m., and I’ll be hosting 80s quizzes at Ugly American at 8 p.m. and Bards at 10:15 p.m. But there is a wrinkle in both. Mine won’t only be 1980s. There will also be questions about the 1880s, 1780s, 1680s, and so on. From Karate Kid to Krakatoa to Cornwallis, it’ll all be there. As for Koob and Kristy’s quiz, they’ll be hosting a round of 80s punk rock in addition to other questions about the 1980s.

And oh yeah, corn dogs are a buck at Ugly American, we’ll be giving away french fries at both bars, great beer specials at all 3, and the Phils-Giants game will be on the big screen at the Bards. Hope to see ya tonight!

Dallas, DC, and Terrence Brown Trio Added to City Vs. City Smackdown

Gonna be an early NFC East matchup on Sunday, as in addition to Albuquerque and Denver, we’ll also be taking on teams in Dallas and DC. Here’s how it will work:

Our top 5 team scores will be measured against those 4 cities’ top 5 scores. Whoever averages the highest will be the winner, and that city will receive the Cup, which will be presented at either Geek Bowl or Quizzo Bowl (depending on who wins). If Philly wins, we get to name the cup whatever we want, and we can defend it anytime we want.

The event starts this Sunday at National Mechanics at 7 p.m. The Terrence Brown trio will be entertaining between rounds. We had them perform a couple of years ago at an event at Urban Saloon and they were terrific. If you want to earn an invite, and have not received one yet, you can do so by either finishing first or second in one of our quizzes this week. You’ve got four more chances to be a part of the excitement and help bring the Cup to Philadelphia. If anyone has any questions, please post them below.

Quizzo Tonight

We get the party started at O’Neals at 8 p.m. Things have been kicking there lately, and plenty of parity, though Brain Delay has been on a hot streak lately.

On to the City Tap House at 10:15 p.m. Just a couple more weeks until I start screaming at Penn kids for using their cell phones. Until then, it’s anybody’s ball game and there’s a $100 gift certificate on the line. Hope to see ya tonight.

Question of the Week

Gordon Gekko’s famous “Greed is good” line in the movie Wall Street was based on an actual statement that this man made in a speech in 1986: “I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself.” A few months after giving the speech, the man in question was arrested for being too greedy. Who was he?

I Heart the 80s Wild Card Week at Quizzo

It’s “I Heart the 80s Wild Card Week” at quizzo. Here’s how it works. All questions will be about the 1980s…styles, celebrities, world events and much, much more. Furthermore, if your team is hoping to play in the JGTSI City vs. City Smackdown and did not score enough points to earn an invite, there is still hope…you just need to score a 1st or 2nd place finish this week to earn an invite. As for teams who did make the cut (in yellow and blue), you will be receiving your official invite today.

Ken Griffey’s Grotesquely Swollen Jaw Wins Sports Quiz

We had a great time at the sports quiz on Sunday night. Nice turnout, and some real uber-geeks in the building. When the dust settled, there was a two man team who took it to the next level, missing only 2 1/2 questions and finishing with a 117(and it was not an easy quiz). Logjammin finished 2nd with a 111 and Where’s the Elevator finished 3rd with a 109. Hoping to do more of these. I’ll post the wild card round (No-hitters) a little later on Philly Sports History.
