Everything You Need to Know About the Jazz Spectacular

Who? You and I, old sport.

What? There’s going to be some swingin’ tunes from the 1920s, some Prohibition era drinks, a 1920s quiz, and a viewing of the season premiere of Boardwalk Empire.

So is the quiz about Boardwalk Empire? No the quiz is about the 1920s, though there will be questions about a few of the actual characters in Boardwalk Empire (Al Capone, Nucky Johnson, etc.)

What if I’m don’t know that much about the 1920s? Don’t worry about it. The point of this quiz is for everyone to have fun, not to ask a bunch of arcane questions about obscure 1920s characters. I’ll keep it loose, with some questions on 20s drinks, 20s big time celebs, and 20s slang. You won’t have to be a history prof to do well and have fun with this quiz.

When is it? Sunday, September 25th. Music starts at 6 p.m. Quiz starts at 6:30 sharp.

Where? A juice joint in the old National Mechanics buildin’. 3rd, between Chestnut and Market. Don’t tell a soul. If the cops catch us sellin’ hooch, we’ll be hard boiled.

Why? Why the hell not? It’s gonna be keen, see?

Is there a dress code? No dress code per se, but I am encouraging people to dress up a bit. And whoever has the best 1920s outfit is going to win a sweet, sweet prize.

Who is performing? The Blackbird Society Orchestra, a terrific 1920s Jazz Band. They’ll be playing the hits of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway and other 1920s greats. You can listen to some of their swingin’ tunes on their Myspace page. There are also rumors of a 1920s comedian, but these have not been confirmed.

How much is it? Tickets are $10 a pop.

What kind of prizes are we talking? The prizes are the bee’s knees. We’ve got a room for two at Resorts Atlantic City for one lucky winner, as well as gift certificates to Farmer’s Cabinet, Franklin Mortgage, National Mechanics, Franklin Fountain, and City Tap House, and seats for 2 at an upcoming event at Audrey Claire’s COOK.

Can you guarantee I’ll have fun, Johnny? Horsefeathers, chap, they don’t call me Goodtimes for nothin’. It’s gonna be jake!

This sounds terrific! I’ll see ya there, Johnny! Now you’re on the trolley!

As for JGTAI, finishing in the Top 3 of this event will be worth double points.

Fayette Crew Mafia Almost Perfect at Wire Quizzo

The Fayette Crew Mafia won The Wire quiz at POPE on Sunday night in what can only be described as a sheiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit show. It was a packed house, standing room only, and it was filled with people who are freaks about The Wire. I mean, I thought I knew the show, but these people really knew the show. The Fayette Crew Mafia got 39 out of 40 correct, plus all 4 bonuses, for an all time high score of 124. The only one they missed, they described who I was looking for but couldn’t think of the guys name (and it was a question about Baltimore, only partially about The Wire). The Dickensian Aspect of Cheese Faced Bitches and Some Shameful S*** tied for 2nd with a 109. The rest of the scores are posted after the jump. If there is enough demand I will rehost the same quiz later this week (maybe Friday?). Let me know if you want to play. I know a lot of people tried to play but it was just too packed.

The Wire Quizzo at POPE

Getting excited about Sunday’s quizzo about the Wire at the POPE. A few notes about the quiz: I don’t like to do my specialty quizzes only for freaks who have seen the show 140 times in their basement (though those people should do fine at the quiz). As long as you’ve seen each episode of the show once, you’ll be able to do ok. That said, I won’t do anything cutesy like do a round on “Things that Rhyme with Wire”. It will be all inspired on the show itself, but I’ll be using more than just scenes from the show. There will be questions about Baltimore, about the soundtrack, about the booze McNulty and Bunk enjoy. I’ll be honest:  I plan on making this one of the best quizzes I’ve ever written. I simply have too much respect for this show to do anything less. It’s all in the game, yo.

Quiz is at the Pub on Passyunk East this Sunday, June 5th at 7 p.m.

Quizzo at the Kimmel Center

Got some more details about the quizzos at the Kimmel Center this week. It’s shaping up to be a pretty awesome event. Basically, I’ll be running a new quiz every night this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the main lobby of the Kimmel. On Thursday it will be a quiz about France, on Friday it will be a quiz about Music and Art, and on Saturday it will be a quiz about Philadelphia. All of the quizzes will begin after the Eiffel Tower Light Show at 10 p.m. It is part of PIFA, the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts. We’ll be giving away lots of cool prizes, including tickets to their great Summer Solstice Event. Hope to see ya there!

Oh My Goodness, All Kinds of Things Going Down in the Next Week

A lot going on right now. In addition to the JGTSpI, there are a bunch of cool events going down in the next week. Here’s the latest:

Sports quizzo tonight at the Ugly American, hosted by Mike Minion. Quiz starts at 8 p.m.

Quizzo Documentary at the Painted Bride on Monday night. 6:30 p.m., with a mini-quiz at the Plough and Stars afterwards. Also, I’ll buy ya a beer if you bring your own (reasonable) trivia question to the Plough that night and can stump the Sofa Kingdom with it.

Not only will I be hosting a mini quiz at the Plough and Stars after the movie on Monday, but I’ll be hosting quizzes at the Kimmel Center next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. I will have full details on Monday, but just so you know: each quiz will start at 10 p.m. and there will be a different theme each night. It’s gonna be really cool.

Da Vinci Quiz Next Friday! (and other quizzo news)

Hey kids, gonna have a very fun quiz next Friday night the 25th that you should check out. It is $15 to get in, but that includes admission to the museum, admission to the Da Vinci exhibit (Tix are normally $24.50 to the exhibit alone), and quizzo. There will be a DJ, raffles, and yes, there will be booze. Gonna be a very fun night, and a cool way to check out one of the city’s coolest spots. Hope you can make it.

It’s all about Quizzo, Philadelphia’s pub quiz game. Local teams (Sofa Kingdom) and celebrities (Johnny Goodtimes, the Bob Barker of Quizzo hosts) involved with it are showcased in this entertaining documentary.

  • The JGTSpI is now through week 2. Scoreboard coming Monday. There is currently a very easy physical challenge that can earn you some points. Just wear an article of clothing with a team in the tourney on it (see post below). And don’t worry if you haven’t scored yet. This one is gonna run a little longer than in the past, so you’ve still got plenty of time.
  • If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly suggest the catheter videos I posted earlier this week. I really think you’re going to enjoy them.
  • As for next week, the best place to get a win is definitely O’Neals. Been really quiet there the past few weeks. Hanging out there right now, watching some NCAA hoops with Koob (Steak Em Up) and Todd, Steve, and Greg (The Savage Ear.), and Hunter (Todd and Lil). Life is good. Enjoy the weather and have a great weekend everybody!

Dance Quiz on Saturday

Now if there is one topic I am expert at, it is dance. Therefore it is only natural that I am hosting a fundraiser for Alchemy Dance Studio this Saturday night at Oh Shea’s at 19th and Sansom. $10 a player, with all of the money raised going toward the non-profit dance company. Quiz starts at 8 p.m., and winners get a VISA $100 gift card. Expect questions on everything from the origins of the waltz to Dancin’ Queen to Dances with Wolves. Gonna be a fun quiz. Hope you can make it.

Quizzo and Comedy on Monday Night!

Picture 11We’re pulling a quizzo-comedy doubleheader on Monday night. Hope you can join us. We’re kicking it off at Koob and Kristy’s first POP quiz at the Khyber at 7 p.m. They did their first one this past week at the Raven and apparently it was a big hit. Great drink specials and a chance to check out the all new Khyber setup.

Then we move across the street to the Plough and the Stars, where we’re gonna be putting on a great comedy show at 8:30. I’ll be hosting and inviting people up to play face-off, Chip Chantry and Steve Gerben will be featuring, and Dennis Horan will be the headliner. You all saw Chip’s dance moves on Saturday night, and saw him perform character Bing Supernova at halftime. Can he tell jokes as well as he can dance? Find out Monday night. Steve was named Philly’s Phunniest comedian by Helium Comedy Club in 2007, and his short New Age Medic video is a viral hit on youtube. Our headliner is Dennis Horan, a local comedy legend. He’s been performing for over 20 years, and he may be the funniest computer programmer you’ll ever see. This is gonna be a fun night (we’ll be celebrating Kristy’s birthday) and I’ve gotten three of the funniest comedians in Philadelphia on the show for a mere $5. Hope you can make it!
