Tonya Harding, Electrocuting Elephants, and Feral Children

thisweek

Pretty amazing edition of the This Week in Worthless Knowledge podcast this week. We discuss the Tonya and Nancy drama that occurred 21 years ago this week, what kind of sicko would videotape an elephant getting electrocuted (ahem, Thomas Edison), and how adopting a feral child would affect our respective marriages.

Also, if you’re as big of an It’s a Wonderful Life fanatic as we are, you should probably listen to us talk about the greatest film of all time in this episode.

(If you don’t use iTunes, you can listen to them here.)

And be sure to like us on Facebook, where we occasionally post weird stuff that has to do with that week’s episode. If you like weird things in history, you’re going to dig our podcast.

Kenn Kweder to Perform at Quizzo Bowl XII!

You always remember the first time you hear something that sounds unlike anything you have ever heard before. I still remember as a 7-year old in 1982, listening in amazement at the Little League field as a couple of guys played Grandmaster Flash on their boombox. I had never heard anything like it, and it kicked off a love of hip-hop that persists to this day.

Fast forward about 25 or so years, when tuned in WXPN one day and heard a song unlike anything I had ever heard before. It was Heroin, a song that broke the longstanding rule in our society that art about dark topics needs to carry with it an appropriate gravitas. This song broke that rule, being an upbeat and peppy song about a relationship made stronger through heroin. It was ironic, weird, and really catchy. By the end of the song, I found myself singing along enthusiastically. I heard the DJ say that it was Kenn Kweder. When I got home, I rushed to the computer to see what the deal was with this guy, and ran into not only a great artist, but an amazing story. (I also contacted Chip, who said incredulously: “You’ve never heard of Kweder? Duuuuuuude!) I had stumbled onto a local icon, a Philly guy who had travelled the world playing rock music, who had had a chance to make it big but refused to sell out, and who was still rock ‘n’ rolling into his 60s, somehow maintaining rock n roll not as a hobby but as a profession. Who does that? (If you haven’t already, PLEASE read this interview with Kweder that I did a couple of years ago. Really fascinating.)

Kweder became the subject of a documentary that was recently released to rave reviews at a Tampa Film Festival and will be released in Philly at some point this year (see trailer above), so I thought it would be a really cool time to get Kweder on board for Quizzo Bowl. He’ll be bringing a full band along, and is prepared to rock the house down. Our last few music acts have been truly incredible, and this promises to be no different. And I’m expecting you guys, the nerd elite who will be attending, to get into the spirit too. A lot of Kweders stuff is sing-songy, back and forth with the crowd, so be ready to get involved. He and his group (the Hipster Mind Tricks) will also be playing a lot of sweet jams from the mid 70s, as our theme is “The Spirit of ’76” (more on that later.) We have the last of the true rock stars performing at Quizzo Bowl XII, so get excited. The Bowl takes place on February 6th at World Cafe Live. Tickets can be purchased now online. I’ll have some on me at quizzo starting next week. Let’s get it!

Quizzo For the Cause Starts At Quizzo Tonight!

Every year at this time, we raise money for a worthy charity, and we’ve got a great one this year. The Poor People’s Economic Human Right’s Campaign does a remarkable job of not only campaigning for the rights of the poor, but of helping them in extremely meaningful ways. They house victims of domestic violence. They house every homeless person that comes their way. They help families in trouble keep their homes by helping with bills and utilities. You can learn more about who they are and what they do here. If you’d like to donate but cannot make it to quizzo this week, you can do so here.

The organization was founded by Cheri Honkala, who was once a homeless mother herself (and who I interviewed a few years ago for Philly Mag when she was the VP candidate for the Green Party in the 2012 election). In talking with her earlier today, she told me that a lot of people stepped forward when she was in a really tough situation, and she wanted to do that for others. She also told me that what was unique about her organization was that the people that PPEHRC helps are expected to pay it forward when they get back on their feet, and to also take leadership in their communities and to fight for the poor.

Cheri told me of several things that our fundraising could help with, including  a victim of domestic violence from Texas who they were trying to find an apartment for and a disabled woman who was recently foreclosed on in Mt. Airy, and who would be back on the streets if she doesn’t find an apartment soon. I can hardly think of a better organization to raise money for in the spirit of the season. Every dollar helps, and 100% of all donations will be given to the PPEHRC. She has also given me a list of toys for 23 children who are looking for gifts this Christmas. If anyone wants to donate a toy for one of these children, please contact me at johnny at johnnygoodtimes.com and I will shoot you one of the toys on the wish list. Thanks in advance for everyone’s generosity. One of my favorite things about this little community we’ve got here is what a generous crew you guys are.

Why You Should Shop at Shibe This Holiday Season

Divine_Lorraine_tee_new

Two years ago, three Philadelphia natives and I bought a sports clothing store on 13th and Walnut called Pro League Authentics. We had no clue what we were doing, but we had a lot of fun doing it. Now, two years later, we’re getting a lot better at it (while still having fun). While a lot of articles lately have talked about local sports stores getting crushed by the wretchedness of the local teams, we’ve managed to largely avoid that by getting ahead of the curve and doing a lot of unique, one of a kind pieces, and we have in fact expanded in some ways outside of sports (for example, the Divine Lorraine shirt above.) Necessity is the mother of invention. The awfulness of the local teams has forced us to get creative, and the results have been tremendous, thanks in large part to the incredible local artists we have working for us.

Also cool is that the quizzo world has had a lot to do with our success. Our primary screenprinter is Alex Ciambriello, who used to be a member of the storied Sidecardigan crew. He mentioned to me soon after we opened that after working in printing for years, and he was starting his own business. We started throwing some shirts his way. The result has been awesome for both of us, as we each helped the other get their business off the ground. His work is terrific, and we’re proud to carry so many Philly-made shirts in the store.

Quizzo expats from the North Star of course remember the bartender Steph. Well, a few weeks before they closed, I discovered that she did a lot of artwork with soaps. We thought it might be fun to expand our offerings at the store, and just this past week we brought in some brand new soaps that you have to see to believe. My personal favorite is the “Dallas Sucks” Fight Club soap.

The list of local artists doesn’t stop there. Jon Billet did a poster for quizzo at the Sidecar a few years ago. I liked it so much that I hunted him down and encouraged to do some artwork for us. The results have been excellent. Our best selling shirts at the store are his stadium series shirts. He also did the Divine Lorraine shirt you see above. Jon subsequently recommended another Philly artist, Keni Thomas. Keni has done incredible work for us, including the Sir Charles, Rocky vs Apollo, and McGillin’s shirts.

Not all of our artwork is on shirts, however. We also carry prints by Philly word artist Dan Duffy. On the walls hang unique collages from a guy named Jason Whitcraft. We met Jason at a local craft fair and loved his one-of-a-kind stuff, so we asked if we could put it on the walls.

Shibe isn’t a collection of generic sports shirts that you can find at Modell’s. It’s a celebration of Philly art, unique talent, and local business. If those are the kinds of things you want to support this holiday season, then I encourage you to check out the store. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, you’re gonna like the stuff we have. And today only, we’re offering 30% off everything online. Just go to the website, use the code “Save30” at checkout and you can save a fortune. It’s the best deal we will offer all season, so take advantage. Check out the website today, be sure to like us on Facebook, and swing by the store this coming month. My three fellow owners and I have put a hell of a lot of work into it in the past 2 years, we’re proud of the direction it’s heading, and we think you’ll dig it too.
