The Philadelphia Phillies Quiz

With Opening Day upon us, I thought I’d share a few questions from last night’s quiz. Here is a round on the Phillies…sort of. All questions are normal trivia questions, but you’ll find current members of the Phillies in each of the answers. Answers are below. For more baseball fun, check out my 40 reasons why baseball is better than football.

  2. This alternative band from Arizona had hits with the songs Lucky Denver Mint, The Middle, and Pain.

Final Four Week at Quizzo

Don’t freak out, folks. Final Four Week does not mean a lot of questions about basketball. It means a lot of questions about the states of Kentucky, Connecticut, Virginia, and Indiana. It means questions about Finals and questions about Fours. Questions about Houston, and questions about famous Butlers and famous Bulldogs. You get the picture. Gonna be a fun quiz. (On Thursday, I wouldn’t be all that surprised if there were a few baseball questions thrown in the mix too, to celebrate Opening Day.)

JGTSpI Scoreboard After 3 Weeks

Things are starting to take shape in the JGTSpI. Here are the scores. Teams in yellow are currently in the Top 10 and eligible for the bonus prize. Teams in green would earn an invite if the event were held today. Teams in purple are on the bubble. Teams in light blue would not receive an invite if the event were being held today.  The tentative date for the Spring Bash is May 1. It’s not set in stone, but that’s what I’m leaning towards. I have a very cool venue in mind, just gotta make sure the date works for them as well.

But assuming it’s May 1, there are 5 weeks left to earn yourself some points. But even if you have no points or currently are on the outside looking in, worry not. There are several ways of getting your team into the mix. First of all, there will be two BONUS POINTS QUIZZES this week. The first one is tonight at the Khyber tonight at 7 p.m. Winner walks with 8 points, 2nd place gets 4, and 3rd gets 2. Considering that there have been an average of 3 teams at the Khyber so far, you’ll be all but guaranteed points by playing tonight. The second one is Tuesday at O’Neals.

Secondly, there is a super easy physical challenge currently up on facebook. You have until Friday to get a picture up of you in a hat (any hat besides a baseball cap). Up to 4 points can be earned by any team. There will also be a prize for whatever team earns the most bonus points. So far, only a few team have taken advantage.

Point being, we’re into the nitty gritty. Time to show and prove. Plenty of chances to earn points this week. If you want to earn an invite, I wouldn’t let this week’s quizzes pass by without trying to earn some points.

NOTE: Mike Minion will be hosting an All-Sports quiz next Friday, April 8th at the Ugly American. Details forthcoming.

Free Dinner for You at Quizzo Tonight?

Koob and Kristy will be hosting their pop culture quizzo at the Khyber at 7 p.m. It’s a great quiz, and tonight all questions will be about the 1990s (including a music round). Furthermore, I had someone tell me that they took my recommendation on the Khyber having the best BLT ever and tried it…and agreed that it was mind-blowing. Keep in mind, there are usually only about 3 teams and a $50 gift certificate. Translation: if you bring a good team to the Khyber tonight, you can probably eat an awesome dinner for free. And if you don’t believe me that the food is awesome, check out this tremendous review in the Philadelphia Weekly. Yes, you read correctly, they have bacon grease popcorn.

On to the Westbury, where I regret to inform you that it appears that tonight will be the final Westbury quiz. As much as I busted Mike’s chops about hosting such a difficult quiz, this was still one of the best quizzes in the city, and he brought in a good regular crowd. Sorry that this one isn’t continuing on (I also discovered through Mike’s quiz that the Westbury is a great bar, and has some of the best drink specials around), and hope Mike finds a new Monday night quiz soon. Action starts at 9 p.m. Hope to see ya there!

Johnny Goodtimes: Hipster?

There is a piece in this month’s Philly Mag that features a few lines from me talking about the Phils. (Of course, the topless shot of the woman who tried to sell her body for tickets is causing a bit more buzz than Philly’s favorite quizmaster. Topless crazy women always steal my thunder!) Nonetheless, I do want to thank Philly Mag for running this piece, and more importantly, for airbrushing me so I look like I have muscles. But something kind of funny to note in the piece: I am described as a hipster. I’ve always thought of hipsters as people who wear tight jeans, never laugh, and listen to crappy indie rock like Belle and Sebastian. Am I wrong? Do hipsters wear ugly sportcoats and host trivia at bars? I’m so confused. Vote below and let me know: am I a hipster?
