All New Philly Quiz Tonight, as Well as $3 Fries

A very interesting Philly quiz earlier in the week. We learned plenty about Philly celebs, musicians, and history. We’ll learn even more tonight, with all new Philly questions. We’ve also got $3 french fries (both bars) and $2 (Ugly American) and $3 (Bards) beers, as well as $1 corn dogs at Ugly American. Gonna be a great night to quiz. Hope to see ya there!

Your Cliff Notes to the 1911 World Series

I’ve  been reporting on the 1911 World Series (played between the Philadelphia A’s and New York Giants) as if it were happening live, and covering the games 100 years to the day that they occur. So far we’ve gotten through the first three games and are in the midst of a rain delay. Baker’s big hit leads A’s to win in Game 2.

There’s not only some good info on the Series but some incredible photos as well. If you’re just looking for the Cliff Notes, here they are: The Giants came into the Series with a great base stealing team, while the A’s came in with a “$100,000 Infield”. The Giants also have a superstar pitcher in Christy Mathewson, and he was excellent in Game 1, leading the Giants to a win. In Game 2, A’s pitcher Eddie Plank was unhittable, and Frank Baker had a big homer to give the A’s a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. In Game 3, the Giants, looked to have the game locked up when Baker hit a 9th inning homer to tie it, and the A’s won in extra innings. After 3 games, the rain started pouring in Philly, and shows no sign of letting up. Not a problem, as there are plenty of cool things to talk about while we’ve got a few days off.

 

JGT Power Rankings

Running a little late this week. This covers quizzes through last Thursday’s quizzo, and do not include this Monday or Tuesday’s results. A crazy week last week with tons of new winners completely shook up the rankings.

1. Million Dollar Robot Baby (City Tap House). An impressive win over Steak Em Up at City Tap House and losses by the 4 teams ahead of them in the rankings propel the Baby to the top spot. Last Week: #5.

2. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics (North Star). One question away from perfection at North Star propels them up the ladder. Last week: #7

3. Steak Em Up (CTH and Bards). Not one but two second place finishes bumps them from the top. Last week: #3

4. Inglorious Barristers (Locust Rendezvous). 2 wins in the last 4 weeks at the toughest quiz puts them in a sweet spot. Last week: #11

5. Philliez Nutz (Bards). These guys have made a name for themselves by knocking off the Steak at Bards two o the past three weeks. I saw Nate sweet-talking them after the latest win, making it obvious that he’s trying to absorb yet another top competitor. Steak Em Up are a corporate quizglomerate if ever there was one. Last week: NR

6. Mister Lippers (Ugly American).  A damn fine 119 point performance at Ugly American gets the Lippers on the big board. Last week: NR

7. The Jams (Locust Rendezvous). If they had answered one more question correctly last week, and they could very well be #1. A 3-point loss to the Barristers drops them in the rankings. Last week: #4

8. Firehouse (Black Sheep). Burst onto the scene with a 15 point win over Duane’s World and the Puma at Sheep. Are they a flash in the pan or a new rival at the Sheep? We’ll find out for sure soon enough. Last week: NR

9. What’s Good for the Puma (Black Sheep). Ordinarily, a 3rd place finish wouldn’t drop you this far, but there’s just been so much parity at quizzo lately it’s hard to stay in the Top 5 without a win. Last week: #2

10. Taking it to the Max (O’Neals). A convincing win at O’Neals get the Max back on the big board. Last week: NR

11. Team Popesack (North Star). A spanking at the hands of L. Ron drop them quite a bit. Last week: #3

12. Duane’s World (Black Sheep). Their precipitous slide down the power rankings has been Red Sox-esque. And I hear they’re drinking in the clubhouse. Last week: #9

Philly Week at Quizzo

We enter Week 5 of the Autumn Invite with a lot going down. And we’re in for an interesting week, because we’re going with all Philly questions. From Ben Franklin to Joe Frazier, from City Hall to the Great Northeast, we’re going to find out how much you know about the city you live in. It starts tonight in Manayunk at 6 p.m., continues at O’Neals at 8*, and moves to City Tap House at 10:15 p.m. Hope to see ya tonight!

Johnny To Host his First Ever Quizzo in Manayunk on Tuesday Night

This Tuesday night I will be hosting a quizzo in conjunction with WHYY’s website Newsworks.org to celebrate the one year anniversary of their site. This is going to be a very local-centric quiz, with all questions about Philadelphia and most questions about the East Falls/Manayunk area. It will go down at the Manayunk Brewery at 6 p.m. sharp on Tuesday night and admission to be free. So if you’ve got any friends in the Manayunk area, please do me a favor and give them a heads up. Gonna be a fun quiz.

Relive the 1911 World Series in Real Time (plus 100 years)

Working on a very cool project over at phillysportshistory.com. I am currently recreating the 1911 World Series exactly as it unfolded, 100 years to the day, as if I were a writer at the time. I am featuring the pitchers of each game, plus  using a cool online tool that allows you to “watch” each game live, exactly 100 years to the hour after it happened. Tons of cool info and some really incredible old photos I have dug up. If you are a baseball fan, or even just a history buff, I think you are really going to get a kick out of this.
