I Heart the 80s Quizzo Tonight

A couple of chances to earn points in the JGT SpI this evening (Scores being posted later today.) We start out at the Khyber, where Koob will be hosting an all-80s quiz! Should be a lot of fun, and a great way to earn points, as there is certainly no favorite yet at that quiz. On to the Westbury at 9 p.m., where Duane’s World and Group W will battle it out for Westbury supremacy and the rest of us will either a) pull off a Buster Douglas-like miracle and knock off the two favorites or, much more likely, b) gun for third and enjoy the Westbury’s incredibly awesome drink specials. It’s a win-win. Hope to see ya tonight!

Quizzo News and Notes

Week One is in the books, but it doesn’t mean you can’t get some points on the Big Board. You’ve got until Monday noon to earn some points in the JGTSpI via  Facebook physical challenge, getting your  picture taken in front of 4th Street Deli and posted online. After that, I’ll be posting scores after Week 1.

We’ve still got a long ways to go, so if you didn’t score in Week One, worry not. You will have plenty of time to get your team in the mix. Remember, in addition to a giveaway drawing among the Top 10 finishers, there will be a sweet prize for whichever team scores the most via physical challenges.

Next week, keep in mind that you can score points at Koob and Kristy’s quizzes, in addition to me and Mike’s. Koob hosts an all-80s quiz next week. The Khyber on Monday, the Raven on Tuesday. Anyone who wants to play on Monday night, let me know. I’m trying to put a team together at the Khyber.

Someone reminded me that I hadn’t posted Quizzo Bowl questions yet. I’ll have those posted on Monday. Also gonna have some pretty cool changes to the website in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned.

Finally, here’s my latest podcast on Comcast with Lee. Pretty good stuff. Check it out. Have a great weekend everybody, and I’ll see you next week!

Spring Invitational Rolls On Tonight

March Madness isn’t just for hoops. You’ll also find it in quizzo, as the JGT Spring Invitational has begun. Tonight, there are two more chances to earn some early points. We start at the Locust Rendezvous at 6:15 p.m. Been rocking lately. $2 Mooseheads this week is just incredible. It’s a tough place to get a win, so if you’re going for victory, be sure to bring out your big guns. A win here instantly gets you an invite to the Big Boy table.

On to the Black Sheep at 8 p.m. Not quite as cutthroat as the Vous, but it’s no cakewalk either (Your best bet for a win this week will come tomorrow night at the Ugly American.) A good crowd, great service, and 3 different winners in the past 3 weeks. Oh, and might want to study up on your dancers. No regulars played on Saturday, so I’m reusing one of the rounds. Hope to see ya tonight!

Bonus! The Best Best Picture Winners According to Koob

Koob’s Best Pic resume isn’t quite as impressive as Junior and Mike’s but it is pretty damn good. He’s seen 63 out of 83. So I thought it would be pretty fun to throw in his two cents. So w/o seeing Mike or Junior’s he threw in his Top and Bottom 5, and the results were interesting. He agreed with both Mike and Junior on Casablanca, and agreed with Mike on Godfather. Here are his other three best.

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST. This is my favorite film of all time, so of course it has to be on my list of the five greatest best picture winners.  Jack Nicholson’s best role hands down.  Perfect from start to finish with one of the best endings of all time.  Look for appearances from Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd as some of the mental patients.

JGT’s Take: I also love this film. The baseball scene is one of my favorite film scenes of all time.

THE GODFATHER PART II. I rank this slightly ahead of The Godfather, but just barely.  I go back and forth on this all the time, but I give the slight edge to Part II because of the way it masterfully tells both the story of Vito Corleone’s journey from Italy and rise to power, along with Michael Corleone’s transformation from a man doing whatever it takes to protect his family to a a cold-blooded and ruthless overlord who drives his family apart.  The betrayal of Michael by Fredo and it’s subsequent aftermath are some of the most heartbreaking and chilling scenes ever caught on film.
JGT’S take: As I stated earlier, I like this one a little bit better than the first one. (Here’s my review of it from a couple of years ago. Needless to say, after since rewatching Godfather I, I get the Marines scene at the end now.) They’re both brilliant, but the second one just covers so much ground in so little time, and ties together so brilliantly and heartbreakingly at the end.
SILENCE OF THE LAMBS . Choosing the 5th movie was hard as there are many deserving candidates, but in my own humble opinion, this movie gets the edge simply because Anthony Hopkins portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in this movie may be the best performance ever captured on film.  Ted Levine is also scarily convincing as the serial killer Buffalo Bill, but he was completely overlooked by the Academy.  I guess they were afraid to award such a creepy performance.
JGT’s Take. I am not a horror film fan. I don’t like spending my free time making myself scared. If I wanted to do that I would just walk 12 blocks south of my house at night time. That said, this is a really well done film that I enjoyed when it came out. Buffalo Bill has haunted my nightmares ever since. Another good reason not to watch horror films.

Week In Review

IN OTHER NEWS: The Spring Invitational kicks off next week! Details coming on Monday.

Some cool stuff on the site this week. In case you missed it:

All-Star Quiz on Sunday

starwars_vs_startrek1Mike Minion is gonna be geeking out hard on Sunday, and he hopes you’ll join him. He’s gonna be hosting a Star Wars, Star Trek, and astronomy quiz that is sure to get some of you Vulcans out of your mom’s basements for the evening. Here’s the details from Kirk Minion:

The Fault, dear Quizzers, is not in our stars …

… but in ourselves, if we stay home this Sunday night and miss the ALL STAR EXTRAVAGANZA! Yes folks, if you’ve ever donned a set of pointy ears, this quiz is for you. We’ll have a quiet place in the back where you can work on your Klingon pronunciation and not bother the rest of us. But if you just enjoy the voyages of the Starship Enterprise and/or The Millennium Falcon, this Sunday will be a lot of fun. We’re gonna go 5 rounds, covering the following topics:

ROUND 1: Captains Courageous — This round will be devoted to the intrepid men and woman in charge, and the craft they called their own

ROUND 2: Twinkle, twinkle little star — Ten questions on the lesser-known roles by the stars of the series

ROUND 3: Hey buddy, let me see your green card — This round is all about alien races and the planets they inhabit

ROUND 4: She blinded me with science — A round saluting all the truly terrible “science” in the shows and movies

ROUND 5: There are more things in Heaven and Earth… — The impossible round. A hodgepodge of difficult trivia.

I’m going to try to include some audio questions in each round to make it interesting. Remember, the quiz starts at 2100 EST on 2 March 2011. (That’s 9 PM this Sunday for the less-geeky, more well-adjusted quizzo fan. Wait, scratch that: there is no such thing as a well-adjusted quizzo fan)

Hope to see you there. On Wednesday, I’ll be putting hints, a list of prizes, and some other info on this site and my Facebook page. For now, Kirk out.

Great Comedy Show Tonight!

chipnmeWe’ve got a stacked lineup tonight for the Johnny Goodtimes Comedy Spectacular. Three of the funniest comics in Philadelphia will be at the Plough and the Stars tonight starting at 8:30 p.m. Steve Gerben and Chip Chantry were both featured in this recent piece from Philly Mag, and Dennis Horan is a comedian’s comedian, a man whose wordplay and comedy writing skills are admired by both audiences and other comics. You are going to have a lot of fun at this show, and tickets are a mere $5. In fact, we’re making it an Old City Quizzo/Comedy Doubleheader. Koob and Kristy are doing quizzo at 7 across the street (see below). Hope to see ya tonight!

Koob and Kristy Kick Off Quiz at Khyber Tonight

khyberKoob and Kristy had a great turnout at the Raven on Wednesday night for their Pop Culture quizzo. Tonight they debut at a new spot: the legendary Khyber Pass. The Khyber Pass Pub reinvented itself a few months ago, and I’ll be honest, I haven’t been back since they reopened. Looking forward to seeing what they did with the place tonight. They already had a great beer list, now it’s apparently even better, and the food is getting rave reviews. Quizzo starts at 7 p.m., and there are rumors of lots of Oscars related questions. After quizzo we’re headed over to Plough and the Stars for a post-quizzo comedy show. Gonna be a very fun night. Hope you can join us.

OTHER QUIZZES: Mike Minion’s quiz for tonight has been cancelled, but details about his upcoming Star quiz for this Sunday are coming soon. If you’re in West Philly, can’t make it out to Old City, and wanna play quizzo, there is also a Big Quiz Thing show at the World Cafe Live tonight.

Quizzo at Westbury Cancelled for Tonight

Here’s a note from Mike Minion: Hey folks, the Westbury is making some improvements (they got a new bar top and have to install it), so tonight’s quiz is cancelled.  We’ll be back next week, and don’t forget, this Sunday night at the Westbury is the ALL-STAR EXTRAVAGANZA!!   Starting at 9:00 PM, this 5-round quiz on Star Trek/Star War/Astronomy is gonna be a lot of fun (if you are a the right kind of geek, that is). In any case, there will be lots of prizes and give-aways.  Stayed tuned to this channel: Later today I’ll be posting the topics for the rounds.  Live long and prosper! (Yeah, I know, but I couldn’t resist)
