Things seem to be heating up as we head down the homestretch. Nice crowds at both spots last night. Tonight we move downtown, with quizzes at the Black Sheep and Locust Rendezvous. Take your chances against the two hottest teams in quizzo right now. First, at the Vous ($3 Shock Top Rasberry Wheats, $2 Rolling Rocks) the Jams have won 8 of the last 9 weeks. Meanwhile, at the Black Sheep, Duane’s World has won 5 of the past 7 weeks. Can you knock off either of these heavyweights? Test your mettle against the best tonight.

Big Money Tuesday Tonight
I’ve got big prizes as always to give away at O’Neals and City Tap House tonight. First of all, at O’Neals, things are wide slam open. If you are looking for a win, this is probably your best shot all week. Action starts at 8 p.m. $3.50 margaritas and a $50 GC for the winners. On to the City Tap House, where the winners walk with a $100 GC. Another great place to try to get a win, as there is still no established order at the House. Hope to see ya tonight!
Scores Through Week 6 of the JGTSpI
Here they are, the scores through 6 weeks. Teams in the yellow would be in the running for the bonus prize if the season ended today. Teams in the green would earn an invite to the event if the season ended today. Teams in the purple are on the bubble. They should highly consider scoring a few physical challenge points this week (new physical challenge is posted). Teams in the blue better make some magic happen soon or they won’t get an invite to Percy St. BBQ on May 1st. Hope to see ya this week!
Koob and Kristy Back at the Khyber Tonight
We enter week 7 of the JGTSpI, and there is no doubt about it: you’re best bet to score a first place win and earn an invite is by playing tonight. Not only is it a fun quiz, but the food is terrific, and the beer specials are sublime. I heartily encourage you to attend. Action starts at 7 p.m. It is a pop culture quiz, and I’ve heard it has a “nerd” theme for tonight.
All-Philly Quiz Tonight at the Kimmel!
That’s right folks, all of the questions at tonight’s Kimmel Center quiz will be about the City of Brotherly Love. Last night we had a lot of fun with music and art, and tonight we’re gonna keep it going with questions about Philly music, landmarks, sports, and famous Philadelphians. Should be a lot of fun. How well do you know your hometown? Find out tonight! And yes, every team that shows will get a bonus point in the JGTSpI.
Quizzo at the Kimmel Tonight! Art and Music is the Theme
We had our first of three Kimmel Center quizzos last night, and it was…interesting. There was a show going on on the roof floor that was a bit loud, but they got done fairly early, so the last two rounds went pretty smoothly. The volume wasn’t really an issue, people could still hear me, but it was just interesting to play with ambient noise descending from the heavens in the background. We’ll time it tonight so that we have more time to ourselves w/o background noise. Nonetheless, it’s a great spot for a quiz and Duane’s World came away with the win last night.
Tonight an all-new quiz, this time on Arts, Humanities, and Music. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. We’ll kick off shortly after the Eiffel Tower light show at 10 p.m. We will be located on the main floor just beyond the Tower. Yes, they have a bar and snacks, and yes, this quiz (and tomorrow’s quiz on Philadelphia) will count towards the JGTSpI. In fact, tonight I will give 1 bonus point to each team who shows up. Have some very cool prizes to give away to the winners as well. Hope to see you tonight!
French Quiz Tonight at the Kimmel
All things France will be on the table tonight at quizzo at the Kimmel Center. French cuisine, French celebrities, French history, French sports, etc. Should be a lot of fun. We’ll be starting the quiz right after the Eiffel Tower light show, which kicks off at 10 p.m. And keep in mind, if you are looking for regular quizzo, you can play tonight at the Ugly American at 8 p.m. and the Bards at 10:15 p.m. with Mike Minion. All quizzes are opportunities for your team to earn points in the JGTSpI. Hope to see you tonight!
Quizzo Tonight
We enter week 6 of the JGTSpI with a lot on the line. For teams on the outside looking in, it’s almost do or die time. And your best chance to win just might come tonight, as both bars have almost unheard of parity. 7 different winners in the past 8 weeks at O’Neals, with 6 different winners the past 6 weeks at the City Tap House. Both of these bars are ripe for the taking. Action starts at O’Neals at 8 p.m., and City Tap House starts at 10:15 p.m.
Went to the Quizzo documentary (The Legend of the Sofa Kingdom) last night at the Painted Bride, and it was really, really good. I had seen the rough draft a few months ago and not really been crazy about it, but the crew went back to the drawing board and really revamped the whole thing. The result was a light, punchy movie with a lot of personality. Great job by Dave, Steve, and Sarah. Furthermore, if anybody needs me, I’ll be on IMDB. I’ll probably stop using facebook now and just hang out there, with all of the other famous movie stars.
Who is Georgie Jessel?
The City Paper, in a short writeup about the Quizzo Movie (Scroll down) said that I was “equal parts old-time toastmaster (think Georgie Jessel) and quick thinking wiseacre.” Which got me wondering: “Who the hell is Georgie Jessel?” Jessel was, according to Mike Wallace, a “showman extraordianry and a man about town in every town he’s ever been in.” (Watch terrific Mike Wallace interview with Jessel here, though he comes off as a bit of a curmudgeon.) He was an earlier vaudeville star, and was initially cast to star in the Jazz Singer, but turned down the role because Warner Brothers owed him money at the time.
He later became a very famous and sought after-dinner speaker. He also had a scandalous personal life. He dated many Hollywood starlets, and married movie star Norma Talmadge in 1934. (They divorced in 1939, and rumor has it that he later broke into her house and shot at the man she was dating at the time.) It was also in 1934 that introduced “The Gumm Sisters” to a crowd in Chicago. After the crowd laughed at their name, Jessel convinced them to change their name to the Garland Sisters. Shortly thereafter, one of those sisters changed her name from Frances to Judy. They discuss it in the above video.
The quizzo film airs tonight at the Painted Bride at 6:30 p.m., with an aftermovie quiz at the Plough and the Stars at around 8:30. Quizzo at the Khyber is cancelled for this week.
Bounty Bowl at Quizzo Tonight
A couple of intriguing options for quizzo goers tonight. If you are looking for some points in the JGTSpI, I would highly suggest playing at the Ugly American. There is no clear cut favorite. Three different winners in the past three weeks. That kicks off at 8 p.m. If you want to play with the big boys, I would suggest going to the Bards. I miscalculated, and put a $35 prize bounty on Steak Em Up even though they’ve only won 2 in a row. No worries, it’s never a bad time to put a bounty on their heads, especially in the last quiz before their big documentary comes out. The bounty stands, and Duane’s World is rumored to be coming to try to take it. If you want to test your mettle against the two hottest teams in quizzo right now, be at the Bards at 10:15 p.m. Hope to see ya tonight!
