A great chance to take an early lead in the JGT Autumn Invitational tonight at Industry. Action starts at 6:30 and we will be done in time for the Eagles game. And I’m offering double points in the JGTAI to the top 3 finshers. It’s an all new quiz, and if you like science you do not want to miss it. Name That Tune for candy as well as French Fry Faceoff. $3 craft beers, great food. Gonna be a great quiz. See ya tonight!

Ok, So We’re Back on at the Bards Tonight

The-Bards-Irish-Bars-in-Phildelphia-2

Ok, ok I get it. You don’t want me screwing with the schedule. I guess trying to do it Wednesday at 10 p.m. was a mistake. So now we’re going to compound that mistake by trying to do it during the Eagles game.

“But Johnny, are you nuts?”

I think you know the answer to that. So yes, we’ll do the quiz at 9 p.m. Yes, there will be an enormous big screen TV behind me showing the game all through the quiz. Yes, you can drink $3 lagers, play quizzo and watch football. Yes, someone at the bar will probably tell me to “Shut that f***ing speaker up before I punch your face in.” So if you’re looking to drink beer and possibly see me get my ass kicked, here’s your chance.

No-One Has EVER Won Two Quizzes in One Night. Can You Do It Tonight?

joe-with-trophies-1917-650

For the first time ever, I’m gonna host two different quizzes in one night, giving you guys a chance to win two in one night. Here’s how it works…I’ll ask the earlier in the week quiz at Locust Rendezvous and Black Sheep. I will then ask a new quiz at Bards at 10 p.m. Any team that plays two quizzes tonight earns an automatic 3 bonus points in the JGTAI. If you win two quizzes, you will earn an automatic invite to the Invitational in November.

And good news…the Jesters of Tortuga will be nowhere to be seen tonight. So it’s wide open. We start at the Locust Rendezvous at 6:15 p.m. $2 Rolling Rocks and $3 Shocktop PumpkinWheat. On to Black Sheep at 8 p.m., then over to the Bards at 10 p.m. The Bards will have regular domestics for $3 and craft beers for $4. A great deal, as they’ve got some awesome stuff on draft. Gonna be a great quiz tonight. Hope your team can make it out…twice if you’re crazy. And we’ll have Name That Tune at all three bars. See ya tonight!

Things have been quiet at O’Neals the past couple of weeks. Great chance to earn an early win and earn a $50 gift cert. That buys a lot of $5 burritos and quesadillas and $3.50 margaritas. Action starts at 8 p.m.

On to City Tap House at 10:30 p.m. The kids have started to return, so I’d expect a pretty big turnout tonight. We’re returning to our 4 round format this week, and we’ve got a pretty easy speed round. $100 gift cert for the winner. See ya tonight!

Bards Quiz Moved to Wednesday…Can You Win Two Quizzes in One Night?

1346264198857_5948013

Tripleheader time on Wednesday! Yep, the friggin Eagles and I are in the midst of a major rivalry. First they screw up quizzo last Monday, now their doing the same this Thursday. It’s obvious they are trying to run me out of business so they have one less corporation to compete for your entertainment dollars with.

But I saw that blitz coming and completed a short screen pass into the flat (terrible analogy): We’re gonna do the Bards quiz on Wednesday night at 10 p.m. Which is awesome. Why is it awesome? It’s awesome because Wednesday nights at the Bards are freaking incredible. Almost of of their craft beers are $4. If you love a good beer and a good quiz, be there on Wednesday.

And I’m gonna mix the quizzes up on Wednesday…gonna do the early week quiz at Vous and Black Sheep, and a new quiz at Bards, so if you are feeling wild and crazy, you can play two quizzes in the same night. In fact, if you win two quizzes in the same night, you will earn an automatic invite to the Invitational!*

*Offer does not apply to Jesters of Tortuga, who are currently on probation due to last week’s egregious display of power.

Autumn Invitational Kicks Off Tonight!

autumninvite

Alright, the offseason is over. It’s game time! The Autumn Invitational begins tonight, and we’ve got a few extra wrinkles in store this season. More on those soon. But in the meantime, we kick it off at North Star tonight at 7 p.m. A great opportunity to earn an early season victory. I’l have tickets to give away to upcoming North Star shows as well as candy in Name That Tune. Gonna be a lot of fun.

Meanwhile, the Sidecardigans seem to be heating back up but they are certainly not unstoppable. Action starts at 9:30 p.m. Gonna have some fun stuff to give away. Hope to see ya tonight!

Prepare to Get Hoffed at Tonight’s Quiz

david_hasselhoff4

Action starts at Industry at 6:30 p.m. $3 craft beers, $8 fries, and a GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A WIN if you’re looking to climb in the JGT Power Rankings. Still no dominant team. Much more casual quiz than some of the more intense venues. Plus we’ve got French Fry Faceoff and Name That Tune for Candy. It’s a really fun quiz.

On to Bards at 9 p.m., which is your chance to knock off the Jesters of Tortuga, who are currently #1 ranked (but facing sanctions for adding Jam Master Phil to their team on Tuesday night at the Tap House.) If you’ve got a serious squad, it’s time to get them in gear and take the quizzo world by storm.

Oh, and there will be a Hasselhoff round. Just sayin’.

I’m Making My Fringe Festival Debut This Saturday; I Hope You Can Make It Out

Screen shot 2013-09-06 at 3.59.12 PM

In 1984, I played on the worst Little League team ever. EVER. We went 0-15, and I don’t recall us ever losing by less than 15 runs. In fact, in one game that I clearly remember, the opposing team (The JCs) scored 39 runs in the top of the first inning. We scored 1 run in the bottom of the first. And then the umpires called the game off. Not for slaughter rule. For darkness. The JCs had batted for over two hours and it was dark by the time the first inning was over.

That inspired the Fringe Show, High Cheese, that I am putting on with Chip Chantry (who was just named Philly’s Funniest at Helium last week) and Carl Boccuti this Saturday at the Adobe Cafe at 8 p.m. (there will be a second show on September 20th at the Adobe as well) We decided to make the show about baseball, but extremely loosely (one of our primary objectives with baseball was to get Fastball Pitcher Bob Gutierrez on the show, if that tells you how loosely we’re taking the topic.) So don’t worry if you’re not a baseball fan; neither is Chip, and he wrote a bunch of this stuff. We’ll cover that terrible Little League team, the trials and tribulations of Steve Bartman, and of course our obligatory take on “Who’s On First?”

I’ve wanted to do a Fringe Show since I moved here 12 years ago, just always found an excuse not to do it. No more excuses. This is it. My wife and I are having a child in December. There are no guarantees that I’ll ever again have a chance to do this. And if this is my only one, I want it to be good. Really good. We’ve written some funny stuff. We still have more to write, more to edit, more to block, and a hell of a lot more to memorize. I have no idea if we can pull it off. And that’s the excitement of doing a Fringe Show. Trying to pull of something you honestly don’t know if you can. This could be a really great show. Or it could be a total train wreck. Either way you’ll get your $10 worth. I really hope you’ll come. More details can be found here.

Sincerely,

JGT

P.S. Oh, and there’s karaoke after the show. If we get 50 people there, I’ll perform “Flashdance” at karaoke.

Quizzo, Name That Tune, and French Fry Faceoff Tonight!

Upsets at the Vous and Sheep last night. Will we see more tonight? Action starts at 6:30 p.m. at Industry. $3 craft beers and $8 burgers and fries. Plus I’ll have fries, t-shirts and Trivial Pursuit to give away, courtesy of the Million Second quiz. Tough to beat.

On to Bards at 9 p.m. Your chance to knock off the #1 team in quizzo, and this is a tricky quiz…wouldn’t be surprised if we saw one tonight. $3 Lagers. And we’ll have the game sensation that’s sweeping the nation…French Fry Faceoff and Name that tune. Hope to see ya tonight!

Yes, Quizzo is On For Tonight

Labor Day is for communist sympathizers. For great Americans like myself, it’s just another day to keep our noses to the proverbial grindstone. So we start at North Star at 7 p.m. Once again, I’ve got a ton of prizes to give away, and it’s a great opportunity to get a victory. Also, $3 Kenzingers and half-off mussels and hummus.

On to Sidecar at 9:30. Dollar off bitter beers, and with the recent struggles of the Sidecardigans, it is anybody’s ballgame. Hope to see ya tonight!
