Quizzo Bowl Updates

Some big news on the Quizzo Bowl front…our first band had to back out due to some unforseen circumstances, but don’t worry, we’re keepin’ it outlaw with my favorite country band in Philadelphia, the Wallace Brothers Band. These guys are truly terrific. I’ve been trying to get them in an event for awhile now and I’m excited that we were able to make this happen.

As far as tickets, we’re at 50 sold, which is fairly typical for having two weeks to go. I will have tickets on sale on me next week at quizzo. If you’d like to attend, get your crew together…once again it’s $200 for a table of 8 or $30 per person. I’ll have both varieties of tickets on me next week, payable in cash. If you can’t get them at quizzo, fear not, they are available online (with a $6 surcharge).

In response to this trash president making us as Americans look like stupid assholes, we’re also going to change the game a little bit on raffle tickets this year…instead of free raffle tickets, we’ll have a minimal charge for each one, with 100% of the proceeds going to Hope for Haiti.

Be sure to follow the Bowl on Facebook, and be sure to use the hashtag #Quizzobowl on twitter and facebook.

Quizzo Bowl Tickets Now On Sale!

Screen Shot 2018-01-02 at 3.25.25 PM

What better day than National Trivia Day than to announce: Quizzo Bowl tickets are now on sale! Same as last year, we’ll be selling them for $200 a table or $30 a person.

And it promises to be quite a hoedown showdown this year, as Outlaw Country and Western legends Billy Ruben and the Colonel’s Pride will be performing between rounds. Favor to ask: don’t let the authorities know that these hard drinkin’, hard livin’ ruffians will be in town. They’ve been on the run from the sheriff since that dust-up in El Paso a few years back.

We’ll also be up to our usual vaudeville hijinks, as Fastball Bob will be there to gum up the works, Financial Advisor Gregg Gethard (author of Cash Dad Trash Dad) will be doling out sound financial advice, and Johnny will try to get his country music career off the ground.

Oh, right, and trivia. Who can forget the trivia? There’s a difference between good trivia and great trivia, and for Quizzo Bowl Johnny filters out all the mailed in nonsense he uses good stuff he uses in his weekly quizzes and distills it down to the GREAT shit. Live music questions, video questions, mind benders; the quiz will be the best one written in America in 2018. Bet on it.

So get your team togther. Minimum team size is 6 and max is 8 (If you have less than 6, it’s OK, but we’ll team you up with another group). You can purchase your tix online, or if you want I’ll have a small number of tickets on me next week at quizzo if you wanna pay in cash.

And if you are playing, we’ll be getting geared up with pics, video, and updates over at Quizzo Bowl XIV on Facebook, so be sure to join us there.

News, Notes, and Next Week’s Schedule

First of all, I want to thank everyone who donated to our annual toy drive. We were able to get gifts for EVERY child on the list, which was just awesome. In fact, Cheri said they actually added a few kids to the list because we got such an awesome response! To everyone who contributed: I can’t thank you guys enough. It really is awesome to be surrounded by so many giving people.

Plenty of other things to talk about as well:

Date is set for Quizzo Bowl XIV. It will be on January 27th at the World Cafe Live. I will have more info next week and tickets will go on sale next week as well. Be sure to check back then.

Pics of last week’s winners are up on the Facebook page. If you wanna see me scream about politics, follow me on twitter.

In addition to Quizzo Bowl on the 27th, Geek Bowl will be in Boston this year, so it would be awesome to have several of our Philly teams there. It’s an incredible event, with over 1000 people playing quizzo. Hit me up if you want more details. We’re going to have at least two teams from Philly attending, but the more the merrier.

Thursday was our last quiz at Industry. Sad to say, they are closing their doors on December 31st. It’s a shame, truly one of my favorite bars in the city. Dave and Lisa are not only great bar owners, they’re great people, and it’s been awesome working with them for over 10 years between Good Dog and Industry. I do not have any solid leads at this point for where I’ll do a new quiz, but I’ll start looking right after Christmas. We’ll be somewhere new in either January or February.

As for next week, here is how our schedule is looking. Note that Birra will start half an hour earlier than usual:

TUESDAY

  • O’Neals 8 p.m. (with Jumping Joe Moore)
  • Sidecar 8 p.m. (with Boots Boccuti)

WEDNESDAY

  • Locust Rendezvous 6:15 p.m. (w/ Boots)
  • Founding Fathers 8:30 (w/ Boots)

THURSDAY

  • Birra 7:30 p.m.
  • Bards 9:15 p.m.

Curtain Call Tonight at Industry

Screen Shot 2017-12-21 at 11.15.02 AM

Dunno if you folks heard the sad news, but Industry is calling it quits after 5 1/2 years. I’ve been hosting there most of that time, and it’s been a total pleasure. Much of the staff has been there the whole time as well, so I’m gonna miss the hell out of Anna and Riley and the whole rest of the crew. And as some of you old timers know, my relationship with Dave and Lisa goes back almost 15  years, since the Good Dog opened. It goes without saying that I love working with those guys and am bummed that the band is breaking up, but I will undoubtedly be spending my fair share of time in the coming years hanging out in Good Dog.

As for what does this mean for quizzo, well I just found out two days ago so I haven’t had much time to figure out a game plan. If I had contingency plans for this kind of thing, I wouldn’t be much of a “man of leisure”, now would I?  I’m not gonna sweat it too much until we get through the holidays, but I’ll start snooping around a bit. I already had a couple of spots that I thought were interesting that had reached out to me recently, so I’ll check with them. We’ll have a new spot locked down in January or February. As for Industry regulars, after tonight, I’d say your best two options in terms of what’s somewhat nearby would be O’Neals and Birra.

We’ll have one last chance to all hang out together, tonight at 6:30, for the holiday spectacular. Hope you’ll join us.

24852533_1521060961324281_4303020085668833233_nThe Phillies traded Freddie Galvis today and also signed Carlos Santana. What does that mean for the future of the franchise? Find out on Monday night at 6 p.m., when the great Jayson Stark, just arrived from Winter Meetings, talks about both deals at our store, Shibe Vintage Sports. And while we’re at it…you always get free shipping from the store with the code “quizzo”. So get something cool for the sports fan on your list and support Philly business (more importantly, support me, Johnny Goodtimes.)

It’s an opportunity to talk baseball with one of the most knowledgeable baseball minds in America, while at the same time finding a gift for the sports fan on your list. Hope to see ya Monday night at 6!
