Quizzo Tonight
Week Two of the JGTSI begins tonight at North Star at 7 p.m. On to Sidecar at 9:30. Things were a little quiet there last week, so I think it’s anybody’s ballgame. Could be a good way to earn 5 points. General quiz this week. And I’ll have pics of last week’s winners posted tomorrow. Lost a few too many brain cells while celebrating our Grand Opening over the weekend to get it done today.
So What the Hell is a Chinese Auction?
As I’ve been talking to people about our big weekend coming up, the first question that people keep asking is a good one: what the hell is a Chinese auction? Truth be told, I just found out what it was this week. Here’s how it will work at our event:
When you arrive at Milkboy on Sunday at 5, you’ll be given several raffle tickets (you can earn more tickets by buying shirts, hats, etc). There will be several shirts, hats, etc. from our store to bid on. But you’ll be bidding on things that might happen in the soccer match. For instance, you can drop your ticket in front of a bowl that reads “US scores first” (and maybe the prize is a US soccer shirt). Another bowl will read “0-0 tie at half”,with an A’s hat as the prize, etc. You’ll decide what to put your tickets on, and then if those things happen, we draw a ticket to see who wins. Should add a little bit of extra excitement to what is already gonna be an exciting match. We’ll be watching on a 10′ big screen, and playing Lee Greenwood every time the Americans score. Oh right, and $5 sangria and $3 pounders of Narragansett and Miller High Life. Hope you can join us!
French Fry Thursday
Week One of theJGTSI keeps on rockin’ and rolling tonight. Once again, rounds are inspired by the World Cup, but you won’t need to know a whole heck of a lot about soccer. Action starts at Industry at 6:30 p.m. Great burgers and a new $3 craft beer special every week. On to Bards at 9 p.m., where Michael, who just got a ton of love in this Serious Eats piece, is behind the bar. Frenc Fry Face-off and Name That Tune both on tap for tonight.
Hope You Can Make It Out to Our Grand Opening Weekend at Shibe Sports!
You guys have heard me talking about Shibe Sports quite a bit lately, and you’ve noticed that the Shibe Sports logo has made its way to our scoresheets. As some of you know, I’ve been a pretty big sports fan my whole life, and have really become a sports history junkie since I moved here, starting a website, phillysportshistory.com, a few years ago. It was nothing huge, just a labor of love, but due to a few lucky breaks that labor of love opened the door for something bigger and more exciting: a vintage apparel store with an emphasis on historic teams, logos, and styles. We took over a store on 13th Street between Walnut and Sansom, and earlier this year Shibe Sports was born.
The first six months have given me an intense education on business, customer service, marketing, and working with others. The three other owners and I have shared a lot of sweat, toil, laughs, beers, frustration, and excitement. And finally we’re where we want to be. We’ve redesigned the interior, we’ve got some incredible events lined up for the weekend, and we’ve established connections with national brands like ’47 and local silk-screeners like Awesome Dudes and Alex (who’s a member of the Sidecardigans on the quizzo scene and does awesome work for us). Our goal is to offer an experience unlike anyone else in Philadelphia, from a historical standpoint, from a customer service standpoint, and from a quality standpoint.
And so this weekend we kick into full gear with our Grand Opening. We’ll have games set up, lots of sales, tons of giveaways, and some really, really cool events. We’ve got several great guest speakers, including the former Mitchell and Ness owner, who will talk about the history of Phillies jerseys. And Shawn Murray, who will be showing off the SPECTACULAR photographs his grandfather took of the A’s and Phillies in the 1920s. On Saturday, we’ll have local historians talking about the history of the stadium we’re named after. I’ll be talking a bit about a few defunct teams from the area, like the Pennsylvania Stoners and the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association basketball team. And on Sunday, we’ll wrap it up with a party and Chinese Auction at Milkboy for the USA-Portugal match on Sunday. We’ve put our hearts and souls into this project for the past few months, and now we’re ready to celebrate and kick things into high gear. We really hope you can join us.

Summer Invitational Starts Tonight!
Just a heads up that the JGTSI starts tonight at North Star at 7. And yes, the US soccer match will be on the big screen! We move to Sidecar at 9:30. Great chance to get your team off to a good start tonight! And no theme this week, though I’d expect a bit of a World Cup twist.
The Invite will take place on Sunday, August 24th. Top 18 teams earn an invite. 5 points for each first place, 3 points for 2nd, and 1 point for third. Plus plenty of bonus points to be earned as we move forward. I’ll have more details tomorrow. (I’ll also have last weeks pics and scores up tomorrow.)
Question of the Week
What Portuguese Prince led Brazil’s independence movement against Portugal, and was subsequently declared Emperor of Portugal on October 12, 1822? (Note: this is a fascinating story, well worth reading up on if you get a chance. Would make an incredible show or movie. Lots of doublecrossing, affairs, and intrigue.)
