2008 Quizzo Statistics!

jgt3.gif
Ok, so this is really cool. JohnniE of Duane’s World went back to last year’s scoreboard and tallied up all the wins and 2nd place finishes of the teams at all 6 quizzes, as well as the 10 high scores. He then found out how much each bar paid and came up with total earnings. Then, this morning, I went into a spreadsheet and entered the stats. However, some teams change names regularly, so I’ve had to spend a fair amount of time trying to remember what aliases certain teams have used. So a couple of teams I could be slightly off on their 2nd place finishes. But winners should be right on. If you wanna go back and doublecheck your team by pouring through last years scoreboard, feel free to. Just contact me and I can go back and change the stats. So far, I have gotten through half. So I’ll present those to you now. It’s kind of a time consuming process, so I’ll try to get the other three done either tomorrow or definitely Wednesday. This is very, very cool for us quiz nerds. Thanks again to JohnniE. Enjoy:

Math to Make Your Head Dizzy

number11-1.jpgOn Thursday at the Good Dog, the 2nd round was multiply the numbers 11-20 by the number 77. One of the people playing was David, a math teacher and enthusiast. If any of you out there are math fiends, you’re gonna love the properties of the number 11 Dave was kind enough to share with us:

Thursday’s problem, “Provide every multiple of 77 between 77×11 and 77×20,” becomes a cinch when you know a simple math trick involving multiplying by 11.

*Multiplying By 11*
Take any number (for convenience’ sake, let’s deal with 813, but we could really talk about ANY number of ANY length). In order to multiply it by 11, all we need to do is write down the first number; add the last two numbers; add the next two numbers from the end; and write down the last number. In other words, 813×11=8[8+1][1+3]3, or 8943. 42×11=4[4+2]2, or 462. Etc. The only catch is remembering to carry the 1 if you get a two-number sum greater than 10: 491×11=4[4+9][9+1]1=[4+1][3+1]01=5401. Thus 77×11= 7[7+7]7=847.

More 11 weirdness after the jump…

Pitchers and Catchers 8 Days Away For the World F****** Champions!

Man, I cannot wait. A few notes about the Phils to get you in the mood:

  • The Flying Hawaiian on FOX this morning.
  • Phils interested in Andruw Jones? The other hot former Dodger rumor? No-mahhhhh.
  • Jamie Moyer chatted with folks on ESPN yesterday. Some really interesting stuff. For example, someone asked, “How has baseball changed since you started you’re career?”
The ballparks have gotten smaller. The implementation of QuesTec has changed the strikezone. TV has changed the game greatly. You’re really under a microscope. A lot of fundamentals have been lost in the game. It’s based more on power, home runs, and big innings. Focusing on defense and pitching, to me, is what wins baseball games. As for toughest guys to get out? J.T. Snow. I used to kid him about it. I saw him about two weeks ago and asked if he still claimed me on his taxes. Bernie Williams was a tough out. Believe it or not, Renee Gonzales, I could never get him out.
