Big Money Tuesday

We kick it off at O’Neals at 8 p.m. If we can get 30 people in the building, any team that scores 110 points or more and wins gets a $100 gift certificate. On to City Tap House at 10:15, where we’ll have a return of free money faceoff. Plus winners walk with a $75 gift cert. And tonight’s questions are particularly millenial friendly. Yeah, I know you’ve got midterms, but college is all a big ponzi scheme anyway and no employer is ever going to give a shit about how you did on your midterms so blow them off and come play quizzo. See ya tonight!

Quizzo Tonight

We kick it off tonight at Industry, where word is out: the food, drink, and service are all terrific, and the result has been packed houses the past few weeks. Let’s keep it going tonight. Action starts at 6:30. On to Bards at 9:15, where we’ve been rocking and rolling for some time now. An interesting quiz this week. See ya tonight!

Casanova Brown and Pennies From Heaven

triangle-tavern-480x360

Who knew anything good could come from the Philly.com comment section? Well here ya go, from the comments beneath a story about the reopening of Triangle Tavern in South Philly. I certainly hope they put “Pennies from Heaven” on their jukebox:

When I was a teenager, I used to work as a kitchen hand in a small, but very popular corner bar/restaurant in South Philly called the Triangle Tavern. They had a reputation for having the best mussels in town. I remember people saying they were the best because they were the cleanest. Fact is, there was an old homeless coot who used to live and work in the basement during those days, and his job was to clean the mussels for each night using an old 40’s era cylinder washing machine. His name was “Casanova Brown”. Well, it’s the name we all knew him by. Who knows what his real name was.

Anyway, every Friday and Saturday, they had music at the Triangle. The highlight of the night would be when Casanova came in wearing an old brown suit, opened his umbrella and set it down upside down in front of the band, grabbed a microphone and started singing Pennies From Heaven as the band backed him up. Everyone in the entire dining area would start digging through their pockets and purses and soon, the air was filled with pennies and coinage of all denominations raining into Casanova’s umbrella. Ever since, I’ve never been able to hear that song without those memories coming back to me of Casanova Brown from 30 years ago. Good times.

A homeless guy used to wash mussels in the basement of the bar, then come up each weekend to sing “Pennies From Heaven” with the house band? That’s incredible. And to make it even better: the house band there was led by a local legend named Dusty Gale. Dusty was the grandfather of Sofa Kingdom member Koob. You can read more about Dusty in this 1992 Inky article.

Quizzo (and Anthony Riley) Tonight

No rest for the wicked:  We are back in business tonight. We start at the North Star at 7 p.m., where we will take a break from our quizzing when Philadelphia legend Anthony Riley performs on the Voice. Riley, who actually performed at one of our invitationals at City Tap a few years ago, is about to go big time. Really excited about this. He’s worked his ass off, performing soul songs on the streets of Philly for years. Nobody deserves this opportunity more than him.

On to the Sidecar at 9:30 p.m. One of my favorite places to quiz. Always a great time and a great vibe. Hope to see ya tonight!

Quick Note on the Weather

Hey guys, it looks like we might get a few inches of snow tonight. I spoke with the WCL, and they only cancel if a State of Emergency is declared. Not looking like we’ll get one of those. I know most of you are in the city, but if you are in the suburbs or out of town and are very concerned about traveling into the city in the snow, please contact me (johnny @ johnnygoodtimes.com) before noon and we’ll see what we can do (no guarantees, but I’ll speak with WCL and see what we can do…another option to keep in mind if you’re in the burbs: regional rail runs quite near the World Cafe). Otherwise, all ticket sales are final and the show will go on, barring a drastic change in the forecast. That said, I urge everyone to please be extremely cautious and leave yourself extra time to get to the event. We are gonna try to start right at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7. But I don’t want anyone in a rush to get there. Take your time and leave early! For up to the minute updates on the event, join the event page on facebook.

Quizzo Bowl News

Quizzo-Bowl-XI-flyer

Alright, guys, well the big event is tomorrow night and boy am I horrified excited! The event is sold out, so I don’t have any more tix to sell. If you have a team of 5 or 6 and you have one player who can play, let me know and they MAY be able to get in at the door, but no guarantees.

We should have enough room for every team to get a table, but it depends on the size of the teams…if we have a lot of 5 or 6 player teams, we may end up with a team or two standing at the bar. To avoid SRO, I’d suggest getting their early. Doors open at 7.

Yes, we will be having an afterparty. It will be at Quigg’s. That’s the bar located at Plays and Players Theatre on 1714 Delancey. All they ask is that we be quiet upon entering and exiting…they are located in the middle of a quiet residential street. Just let the doorman know that you are with the quizzo party.

People have been asking me about outifts. Yes! By all means, dressing ridiculously is highly encouraged, and I’ll be sure to drag up some sort of prize for the best dressed team.

As for the event itself, I expect it to run from 8 until about 11:30. There are way too many moving parts for this to run as fast as a regular quiz, and with the incredible band we’ve got, you wouldn’t want to rush through it anyway. So settle in and relax. It’s your big night, Nerd Nation. Kick back and enjoy it.

As for the quiz itself, expect it to be slightly harder than a regular quiz, since most of the teams will have 6-8 members instead of 3 or 4.

Alright, I’m going to pick up the trophy now. Let’s hope that this year I don’t leave it on the boat. If you have any additional questions, please leave them in the comments below. Also, for up to the minute updates on the event, join us on facebook.

Quizzo Tonight

We kick it off at O’Neals at 8 p.m. $50 gift cert for the winners, plus a $50 bonus if they can top 105 points.

On to Tap House at 10:15 p.m. Getting in the spirit of Fat Tuesday, they’ll have $5 beericanes and hurricanes at the quiz. And I have a handful of Quizzo Bowl tickets remaining. If you want to get them, I wouldn’t wait much longer.
