Action starts at Industry at 6:30 p.m. Y’all know the deal: great food, drink specials, great service. On to Bards at 9:15 p.m. Hope to see ya tonight.

As far as artists this week, we’ll wrap up with a Philadelphia portrait artist named Thomas Sully. Born in England, he moved to Philly when he was 22 and would remain in Philly until his death at age 89. He painted portraits of many well known military and political figures of his day, including John Quincy Adams and Marquis de Lafayette, and his portrait of Andrew Jackson is the one seen on the $20 bill. Above is his portrait of Thomas Jefferson, which hangs in the Rotunda at UVA.

Action starts at Lo Spiedo at 5:30 p.m., hosted by Carl B Sure. Great happy hour specials, and a great evening to be in the shade.

I’ll be at Locust Rendezvous at 6:15 p.m. Roughly. You kids know the deal.

On to Founding Fathers at 8:30. Hopefully this week Aiming for 7th Place can behave themselves. I’m personally not going to allow them to take any shots until the Impossible Round. Speaking of 7th place, not only do we have prizes for 1st and 2nd, it’s the only bar where we have a prize for 7th. (Same questions being used from last night, so don’t play again if you played last night.) Hope to see you tonight!

Today’s art is Man With a Cat by Cecilia Beaux. Born in Philadelphia in 1855, she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, which at the time was run by the controversial Thomas Eakins. She had some success in Philly, but moved to Paris to learn from the masters when she was 32. She was there at a time of great upheaval led by the Impressionists, but she never lost her realist style, and was best known as a portrait artist. She returned to Philly, and took lucrative jobs painting the Philadelphia elite (such as Lehigh President Henry Sturgis Drinker, above). Her paintings were hung at the Paris Salon, and influential French critic M. Henri Rochefort commented, “I am compelled to admit, not without some chagrin, that not one of our female artists…is strong enough to compete with the lady who has given us this year the portrait of Dr. Grier. Composition, flesh, texture, sound drawing—everything is there without affectation, and without seeking for effect.”

She died in 1942, and is buried in Bala Cynwyd. She has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, but among her contemporaries was one of the most famous and most respected female artists in the world.

Action starts at O’Neals at 8 p.m. All new questions tonight. Winning team gets a $50 gift cert. If the winners can score over 120 points, they’ll get a $50 bonus.

Carl B Sure, meanwhile, will be hosting at Alla Spina tonight at 8 p.m. $2 off drafts and deep dish pizza. A great spot to quiz.

On to Tap House at 10:15, where we will again be under the stars. It was a beautiful night last Tuesday, and it should be just as nice tonight. There are $175 worth of prizes up for grabs, and it is anybody’s ballgame (I think a score of 76 won last week’s quiz).

We had a question about Goya last week, so I thought I’d post the picture above, one of his most famous works called El Tres de Mayo de 1808. It is considered a very modernist painting in that almost all artists previously had depicted war as something glorious, whereas this painting showed the horrors of it. When Napoleon appointed his brother King of Spain, many Spanish revolted on May 2nd, 1808. The next day, hundreds of those protestors were rounded up and shot by the French. You can read more about that story here. This painting is currently found in the Museu del Prado in Madrid.

Yes, we are scheduled to have a quiz tonight. With the fact that it’s Game 7 and it’s Memorial Day, I’m not expecting a record crowd, but we did actually have a few teams show last year, so who knows? I’m gonna take it easy today, so the questions will be from Thursday’s quiz (so if you played on Wednesday or Thursday last week, don’t show up tonight. I’ll have a new quiz tomorrow night). Action starts at 9:30.

One quiz tonight: Sidecar at 9:30. One of my favorite places to do the quiz. Hope to see ya there. We’ve also got a new quiz starting this week at Lo Spiedo on Wednesday. Just a heads up. I’ll have a lot more details soon.

Quizzo and Handsome Boy Modeling School

Action starts at Industry at 6:30 p.m. Interesting quiz that led to a major upset at Founding Fathers last night, as Duane’s World fell to Ukraine in the Membrane. On to Bards at 9:15. Hope to see you tonight.

As for today’s song, it’s The Truth by Handsome Boy Modeling School. HBMS was a collaboration of one of my favorite producers of all time, Prince Paul, who gave us the amazing De la Soul album Three Feet High and Rising, and Dan the Automator, a classically trained violinist turned hip-hop producer who did the insane Dr Octagon album. The two albums the duo released (So…How’s Your Girl and White People) were both wonderfully strange and unlike anything else, and featured artists of all genres performing on them. Jack Johnson, Del the Funkee Homosapien, Cat Power, RZA, and Mike Patton of Faith No More were among the artists featured on the two albums. Just really cool stuff. Today’s song is performed by Roisin Murphy, an Irish singer I had never heard of before hearing her here, and J-Live, a highly critically acclaimed if not particularly commercially successful high school English teacher at the time the song was released. For this particular song, the Handsome Boy Modeling School did little more than bring the unlikely duo together: the beat was already done, a catchy jazz tune called Coffee Cold by Canadian composer Galt McDermot. You may have heard the name before: he composed the music for Hair.

Quizzo Tonight

None of the regular twice a week quizzers showed up earlier this week, and I like the early week quiz and think it might stump some of our perennial champions, so only gonna do one quiz this week.

Action starts at Locust Rendezvous at 6:15 p.m. On to Founding Fathers at 8:30 p.m.

As for today’s music pick, it’s Philly’s own Vinnie Paz, formerly of the Jedi Mind Tricks. This is one of the most heartbreaking songs I’ve ever heard in my life. Just a beautiful, heartfelt ode to a man who was obviously incredibly important in Vinnie’s life. Well worth a listen.
