We did the all-beer quiz last night, written by Carl B Sure, and it was a lot of fun. Songs about drinking, beer commercials, beer brands, plenty of good stuff in there. Tonight we kick off the beer quiz at O’Neals at 8 p.m. $50 gift cert for the winners, $100 if they can crack 120 points.

Carl B Sure will be at Alla Spina, where there’s gonna be a Beer Week event, so it should be a great time. Action starts at 8 p.m.

On to Tap House at 10:15, which will be OUTDOORS. We’ve done the past two weeks outside, and it’s been downright awesome. Gonna be another beautiful night tonight, so look forward to seeing you there.

And one programming note: Industry quiz is OFF for this Thursday, as they have a Beer Week event instead. We’ll be back in action next week.

Beer Quiz This Week

Only one quiz tonight, at Sidecar at 9:30 p.m. The theme for this week’s quiz is beer, since it’s Beer Week, so I’ll give you a heads up now: there’s only one quiz this week. It’s also the first week of the JGTSI, so points start counting this week. More details coming tomorrow. Question of the week coming soon.

Today’s video is of some intense monster truck action. My son is really into Monster Trucks (his favorite is Grave Digger), and so now I’m totally into it. The terrible Nu-metal just makes it even more awesome.

Action starts at Industry at 6:30 p.m. Y’all know the deal: great food, drink specials, great service. On to Bards at 9:15 p.m. Hope to see ya tonight.

As far as artists this week, we’ll wrap up with a Philadelphia portrait artist named Thomas Sully. Born in England, he moved to Philly when he was 22 and would remain in Philly until his death at age 89. He painted portraits of many well known military and political figures of his day, including John Quincy Adams and Marquis de Lafayette, and his portrait of Andrew Jackson is the one seen on the $20 bill. Above is his portrait of Thomas Jefferson, which hangs in the Rotunda at UVA.

Quizzo Tonight

man with the cat

Action starts at Lo Spiedo at 5:30 p.m., hosted by Carl B Sure. Great happy hour specials, and a great evening to be in the shade.

I’ll be at Locust Rendezvous at 6:15 p.m. Roughly. You kids know the deal.

On to Founding Fathers at 8:30. Hopefully this week Aiming for 7th Place can behave themselves. I’m personally not going to allow them to take any shots until the Impossible Round. Speaking of 7th place, not only do we have prizes for 1st and 2nd, it’s the only bar where we have a prize for 7th. (Same questions being used from last night, so don’t play again if you played last night.) Hope to see you tonight!

Today’s art is Man With a Cat by Cecilia Beaux. Born in Philadelphia in 1855, she attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, which at the time was run by the controversial Thomas Eakins. She had some success in Philly, but moved to Paris to learn from the masters when she was 32. She was there at a time of great upheaval led by the Impressionists, but she never lost her realist style, and was best known as a portrait artist. She returned to Philly, and took lucrative jobs painting the Philadelphia elite (such as Lehigh President Henry Sturgis Drinker, above). Her paintings were hung at the Paris Salon, and influential French critic M. Henri Rochefort commented, “I am compelled to admit, not without some chagrin, that not one of our female artists…is strong enough to compete with the lady who has given us this year the portrait of Dr. Grier. Composition, flesh, texture, sound drawing—everything is there without affectation, and without seeking for effect.”

She died in 1942, and is buried in Bala Cynwyd. She has been somewhat overlooked in recent years, but among her contemporaries was one of the most famous and most respected female artists in the world.
