JGT Power Rankings

power
  1. Steak Em Up. Two big wins keep them in the top spot for the 7th straight week. Last week: #1
  2. Duane’s World/Escahton. Wow, what a week for Duane’s World. Three wins in one week is almost unheard of. Last week: #6
  3. L. Ron Hubbard’s Diabetics. A blowout win Tuesday at O’Neals, a blowout loss Thursday at UA. They drop one spot. Last week: #2
  4. The Jams. A narrow win at the Vous is their 3rd in the last 4 weeks. Last week: #3
  5. Look Up Look Down Now I’m on a Horse. Despite a performance by Pong that has the JGT Ethics Committee looking into possible sanctions,  2nd place finish at Bards on Tuesday keeps them in the 5 spot. Last week: #5
  6. The Savage Ear. A disappointing loss to the Diabetics drops them two spots. Pam can’t blame biased judges for this one. Last week: #4
  7. Inglorious Barristers. Another heartbreaking loss to the Jams, this time by two points. Last week: #8
  8. 1022. A week after a big win at the Vous, they finish a distant third and drop a spot. Last week: #7
  9. 85 Kicks in the Balls. WHere did these guys come from? They come out of nowhere to finish 2nd at the Black Sheep. Do we have a new player at the Sheep? Last week: NR
  10. Team Friendship. They add Steve-O but still can’t get past Steak Em Up. Last week: NR

Also receiving votes: Catdog, Unusual Suspects, Team Friendship, Pork Fried Rice, Eyes on the Prize, Forza Azzurri, Bong Hits, Phillie RNs

$195 on the Line on Big Money Tuesday

money_1

Big money on the line tonight. $100 to beat Steak Em Up at the Bards. You read that right. I am upping the bounty to $60 (plus $40 gift certificate) for a one time only deal. If no-one can claim it tonight, it will drop back down to what it’s supposed to be (which is like $30 or $35). $2.50 Lagers tonight at the Bards. Also, keep in mind that O’Neals has the highest regular prize on the circuit. $50 for first place, $25 for 2nd. That buys a lot of $3 margaritas. And I’ll give you a little heads up: there is a mystery round tonight. O’Neals at 8 p.m. Bards at 10:15 p.m. Hope to see ya tonight!

Question of the Week

donsThis film, shot in 1996 and released in 2001, starred Leo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, and Kevin Connolly, and is not allowed to be released in the US or Canada.

Steve-O and Doogie Horner Perform at Khyber Tonight

doogieDoogie Horner, fresh off his hit performance on America’s Got Talent, will be making an appearance tonight on Chip Chantry’s One Man Show. That’s right folks, one moment you can be Amerca’s Sweetheart, and the next you could be telling jokes in front of 20 angry people at the Khyber on a Monday night. That’s show biz. That’s just the way it is. But Doogie won’t be the only TV star performing tonight at the Khyber. Far from it. Steve-O, who you might remember from some VH-1 game show that he won a car on (Name That Video, perhaps?), will also be performing. No, not as Andy Reid, but as a piano player. Gonna be a fun show. Hope you can make it out.

Quizzo Tonight at Westbury

Mike Minion is back in action tonight. I am gonna play and I’m looking for a team, so if anybody wants to play holler at me on facebook. Here’s the deets from Mike:

Quizzo kicks off tonight at 10:30 at The Westbury.  For all you quizzo junkies on the JGT circuit, this offers a THRID time during the week to play.  Rumor had that JGT himself is putting together a team for tonight.  So far, he has been spectacularly unsuccesful in winning one of my quizzez, though there have been some good efforts.  Come out tonight and help keep JGT in his place and out of the money.  The lambics are still on special ($3.00), and the Grand Cru is one of my faves.  Prizes for this evening are $40 for first and $20 for second.  Hope to see you there!

Questlove Has Sympathy for the Devil

up-1questloveBefore you read the following, please take a minute to read what Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson wrote in the City Paper after Sabina O’Donnell’s killer was found.

I am trying really hard to give Questlove the benefit of the doubt. I know that I have tried to write something sometimes and then realized that the words I wrote didn’t match up with the thought I was trying to convey. That is what I think/hope happened here. Otherwise, his post is complete bullshit.

He starts his plea for forgiveness with “I too at one point was an 18 year old black kid from Philadelphia.” And? So what? There is nothing, NOTHING, that Ahmir shares with this kid besides his skin color and a common socioeconomic background when he was 18, and trying to find a common thread is ridiculous. But he seems to think that those circumstances make he and Donte kindred spirits.

Questlove writes: just as all the women in that neighborhood internalized sabina’s murder as “that could have been me or any of us!!!” i internalized donte.” This is perhaps the stupidest segment of the whole thing. Should I internalize Jeffrey Dahmer? After all, we are both white guys from middle class backgrounds. We were both once 18. And while Questlove wants to learn what conditions drove this boy to this ugly act, I could really give a damn as to what drove Jeffrey Dahmer to eat people. “He is a f***ing monster” is a good enough answer to me. There are plenty of remarkable mysteries in our world that our more deserving of our attention than trying to figure out why a sociopath acts like a sociopath.

Questlove seems to attribute poverty and growing up in a dangerous community as the major contributors to why this kid turned out to be a monster. Yes, poverty is a major contributer to many problems in our city and our world. But 99.9% of people who we consider “poor” do not rape and strangle people. To lump them all in as being somehow related to this kid because they share a race or a economic background or even a history of abuse is patently unfair to the tens of thousands of people in this city who overcome racism, poverty, abuse, etc. and lead productive lives…and is in fact unfair to those who are not productive but are still certainly NOT RAPISTS AND MURDERERS.

To try to relate with a person who makes a mistake is a sign of empathy and is a wonderful quality. This was not a mistake. This was a series of sadistic, EVIL decisions made by an adult male. After he brutally raped and murdered a helpless young girl, he tried to break into her house and steal a few of her things while he was at it. He was remorseless and ruthless. This is not someone to try to understand. This is not a baby. This is the very definition of a f***ing monster. They exist, they have always existed, and they will always exist. Try to figure them out if you’d like to waste your time doing so, but do not empathise with them. They do not deserve it. Donte Johnson only deserves one thing, and that is to spend the rest of his worthless life in prison.

French Fry Thursday Rolls on Tonight!

frenchfryFree fries up for grabs, folks. And great beer specials at both Ugly American and the Bards. UA starts at 8 p.m. Bards at 10:15 p.m. Got any ideas for a wild card round tonight? Let me know! (P.S. Yes Game 7 will be on at both bars).

Quizzo News and Notes

Ok, so we’re back in business at the Black Sheep tonight at 8 p.m. (FINALLY!) We had to take the last two weeks off due to the Flyers but tonight we are back and we’re badder than ever. We kick it off at Locust Rendezvous at 6:15 p.m. The beauty of Wednesdays is that anybody can win, and anybody usually does. There is total parity at the Vous and the Black SHeep, and I expect tonight to be no different. Tough but interesting quiz this week. The speed round evens the playing field, and the 3rd round is interesting.

Also, I can’t write much today because I had a private gig and then have to go to a meeting. The meeting concerns the First Annual JGT Summer Invitational. This is going to be very cool. I hope to have some details by early next week. It’s going to make for an interesting summer.

Oh, and Steak Em Up won again last night, so the Bounty is now up to $50, which means that any team that knocks them off next Tuesday night walks away with $90. I don’t know of any quizzo anywhere that is that rich. Bards. Tuesday. 10:15 p.m. Get your geek squad together and make it happen. Hope to see  you tonight.

$180 On the Line at Quizzo Tonight!

bounty3

You heard me correct folks. First of all, there is a $50 prize for first place at O’Neals, and O’Neals and Black Sheep are at this point the most likely places for you to score a win. Things have been a little quiet at O’Neals lately, meaning this is a great time to score a seat. We then go to Bards, where there is a $45 bounty on Steak Em meaning that if your team wins and beats Steak Em Up they walk with $85 (including $40 gift certificate). I could be wrong, but I think that’s the biggest jackpot in the city. Furthermore, Steak Em Up is far from unbeatable; just ask Look Up Look Down, who beat them last Thursday. Action starts at 10:15 p.m.
